Y2038: Add 64-bit time for all architectures
glibc support for 64-bit time_t on 32-bit architectures will involve: - Using 64-bit times inside glibc, with conversions to and from 32-bit times taking place as necessary for interfaces using such times. - Adding 64-bit-time support in the glibc public API. This support should be dynamic, i.e. glibc should provide both 32-bit and 64-bit implementations and let user code choose at compile time whether to use the 32-bit or 64-bit interfaces. This requires a glibc-internal name for a type for times that are always 64-bit. Based on __TIMESIZE, a new macro is defined, __TIME64_T_TYPE, which is always the right __*_T_TYPE to hold a 64-bit-time. __TIME64_T_TYPE equals __TIME_T_TYPE if __TIMESIZE equals 64 and equals __SQUAD_T_TYPE otherwise. __time64_t can then replace uses of internal_time_t. This patch was tested by running 'make check' on branch master then applying this patch and its predecessor and running 'make check' again, and checking that both 'make check' yield identical results. This was done on x86_64-linux-gnu and i686-linux-gnu. * bits/time64.h: New file. * include/time.h: Replace internal_time_t with __time64_t. * posix/bits/types (__time64_t): Add. * stdlib/Makefile: Add bits/time64.h to includes. * time/tzfile.c: Replace internal_time_t with __time64_t. |

Y2038: provide size of default time_t for target architecture
To determine whether the default time_t interfaces are 32-bit
and so need conversions, or are 64-bit and so are compatible
with the internal 64-bit type without conversions, a macro
giving the size of the default time_t is also required.
This macro is called __TIMESIZE.
This macro can then be used instead of __WORDSIZE in msq-pad.h
and shm-pad.h files, which in turn allows removing their x86
variants, and in sem-pad.h files but keeping the x86 variant.
This patch was tested by running 'make check' on branch master
then applying this patch and running 'make check' again, and
checking that both 'make check' yield identical results.
This was done on x86_64-linux-gnu and i686-linux-gnu.

Add <bits/indirect-return.h>
Add <bits/indirect-return.h> and include it in <ucontext.h>. __INDIRECT_RETURN defined in <bits/indirect-return.h> indicates if swapcontext requires special compiler treatment. The default __INDIRECT_RETURN is empty. On x86, when shadow stack is enabled, __INDIRECT_RETURN is defined with indirect_return attribute, which has been added to GCC 9, to indicate that swapcontext returns via indirect branch. Otherwise __INDIRECT_RETURN is defined with returns_twice attribute. When shadow stack is enabled, remove always_inline attribute from prepare_test_buffer in string/tst-xbzero-opt.c to avoid: tst-xbzero-opt.c: In function ‘prepare_test_buffer’: tst-xbzero-opt.c:105:1: error: function ‘prepare_test_buffer’ can never be inlined because it uses setjmp prepare_test_buffer (unsigned char *buf) when indirect_return attribute isn't available. Fix BZ# 22180.
POSIX requires that dlclose() and exit() be thread safe, therefore you can have one thread in the middle of dlclose() and another thread executing exit() without causing any undefined behaviour on the part of the implementation. The existing implementation had a flaw that exit() exit handler processing did not consider a concurrent dlclose() and would not mark already run exit handlers using the ef_free flavour. The consequence of this is that a concurrent exit() with dlclose() will run all the exit handlers that dlclose() had not yet run, but then will block on the loader lock. The concurrent dlclose() will continue to run all the exit handlers again (twice) in violation of the Itanium C++ ABI requirements for __cxa_atexit(). This commit fixes this by having exit() mark all handlers with ef_free to ensure that concurrent dlclose() won't re-run registered exit handlers that have already run. |

Fix stdlib/tst-strfmon_l.c test case to agree with the changes in Indian monetary formatting
The test cases should expose non-standard grouping and the trailing
space after the currency sign. After the changes to the Indian
monetary formatting, the Indian formatting still shows the
non-standard grouping. To test the trailing space after the currency
sign I chose the hr_HR locale.

Suppress internal declarations for most of the testsuite.
This patch adds a new build module called 'testsuite'.
IS_IN (testsuite) implies _ISOMAC, as do IS_IN_build and __cplusplus
(which means several ad-hoc tests for __cplusplus can go away).
libc-symbols.h now suppresses almost all of *itself* when _ISOMAC is
defined; in particular, _ISOMAC mode does not get config.h
automatically anymore.
There are still quite a few tests that need to see internal gunk of
one variety or another. For them, we now have 'tests-internal' and
'test-internal-extras'; files in this category will still be compiled
with MODULE_NAME=nonlib, and everything proceeds as it always has.
The bulk of this patch is moving tests from 'tests' to
'tests-internal'. There is also 'tests-static-internal', which has
the same effect on files in 'tests-static', and 'modules-names-tests',
which has the *inverse* effect on files in 'modules-names' (it's
inverted because most of the things in modules-names are *not* tests).
For both of these, the file must appear in *both* the new variable and
the old one.
There is also now a special case for when libc-symbols.h is included
without MODULE_NAME being defined at all. (This happens during the
creation of libc-modules.h, and also when preprocessing Versions
files.) When this happens, IS_IN is set to be always false and
_ISOMAC is *not* defined, which was the status quo, but now it's
explicit.
The remaining changes to C source files in this patch seemed likely to
cause problems in the absence of the main change. They should be
relatively self-explanatory. In a few cases I duplicated a definition
from an internal header rather than move the test to tests-internal;
this was a judgement call each time and I'm happy to change those
however reviewers feel is more appropriate.
* Makerules: New subdir configuration variables 'tests-internal'
and 'test-internal-extras'. Test files in these categories will
still be compiled with MODULE_NAME=nonlib. Test files in the
existing categories (tests, xtests, test-srcs, test-extras) are
now compiled with MODULE_NAME=testsuite.
New subdir configuration variable 'modules-names-tests'. Files
which are in both 'modules-names' and 'modules-names-tests' will
be compiled with MODULE_NAME=testsuite instead of
MODULE_NAME=extramodules.
(gen-as-const-headers): Move to tests-internal.
(do-tests-clean, common-mostlyclean): Support tests-internal.
* Makeconfig (built-modules): Add testsuite.
* Makefile: Change libof-check-installed-headers-c and
libof-check-installed-headers-cxx to 'testsuite'.

starting with the inclusion of config.h.
Do check for inappropriate definitions of __OPTIMIZE__ and
__FAST_MATH__ here, but only if _ISOMAC is not defined.
Correct some out-of-date commentary.
* include/math.h: If _ISOMAC is defined, undefine NO_LONG_DOUBLE
and _Mlong_double_ before including math.h.
* include/string.h: If _ISOMAC is defined, don't expose
_STRING_ARCH_unaligned. Move a comment to a more appropriate

Fix network headers stdint.h namespace (bug 21455).
conform/ namespace tests of arpa/inet.h, netdb.h and netinet/in.h fail for UNIX98 and XPG42 because of inclusion of stdint.h, which defines macros not permitted in those headers for those standards. UNIX98 allows them to include inttypes.h, but (predating C99) has restricted inttypes.h contents (not yet tested in the conform/ tests) not including those macros; XPG4.2 has no such permission and no inttypes.h / stdint.h at all. This patch rearranges the headers to avoid this issue. intN_t definitions move to bits/stdint-intn.h, and uintN_t definitions to bits/stdint-uintn.h. (These are not bits/types/ headers because they each define four types. They are separate rather than just a single header because sys/types.h defines intN_t but u_intN_t rather than uintN_t - and while sys/types.h could define uintN_t because of the POSIX reservation of *_t, existing practice there is largely to condition types on appropriate feature test macros, and indeed there is at least one open bug report (14553) about a type that's not so-conditioned, so maybe types there should actually have conditions added where appropriate.) The affected network headers are then made to include bits/stdint-uintn.h instead of stdint.h. This allows six XFAILs to be removed. This doesn't do anything about inttypes.h defining more than it should for UNIX98, but we don't have conformtest expectations for that case at present (and my inclination is that a fix for that should be as local as possible - affecting only inttypes.h, not stdint.h, only for the case of __USE_UNIX98 && !__USE_ISOC99). Fix environment traversal when an envvar value is empty
The condition when the value of an envvar is empty (not just '\0'), the loop in tunables_init gets stuck infinitely because envp is not incremented. Fix that by always incrementing envp in the loop. Added test case (tst-empty-env.c) verifies the fix when the source is configured with --enable-hardcoded-path-in-tests, thanks Josh Stone for providing the test case. TS 18661-1 defines macros for the width of integer types, intended for use with the fromfp functions to convert from floating-point types to integer types of any width, in any rounding mode and with control over whether "inexact" is raised. Such macros are, of course, more generally useful than just with those functions. Those macros are added to <limits.h> and <stdint.h>. Bug 20198: quick_exit should not call destructors.
In C++11 18.5.12 says "Objects shall not be destroyed as a result of calling quick_exit." In C11 quick_exit is silent about thread object destruction. Therefore to make glibc C++ compliant we do not call any thread local destructors. A new regression test verifies the fix. I will note that C++11 18.5.3 makes it clear that C++ defines additional requirements for _Exit() to prevent it from executing destructors. Given that the point of _Exit() is to terminate the process immediately it makes sense the C and C++ should line up and avoid calling destructors. No failures. New regtest passes. |

Refactor strtod parsing of NaN payloads.
The nan* functions handle their string argument by constructing a NAN(...) string on the stack as a VLA and passing it to strtod functions. This approach has problems discussed in bug 16961 and bug 16962: the stack usage is unbounded, and it gives incorrect results in certain cases where the argument is not a valid n-char-sequence. The natural fix for both issues is to refactor the NaN payload parsing out of strtod into a separate function that the nan* functions can call directly, so that no temporary string needs constructing on the stack at all. This patch does that refactoring in preparation for fixing those bugs (but without actually using the new functions from nan* - which will also require exporting them from libc at version GLIBC_PRIVATE). This patch is not intended to change any user-visible behavior, so no tests are added (fixes for the above bugs will of course add tests for them). This patch builds on my recent fixes for strtol and strtod issues in Turkish locales. Given those fixes, the parsing of NaN payloads is locale-independent; thus, the new functions do not need to take a locale_t argument. Fix strtod ("NAN(I)") in Turkish locales (bug 19266).
The implementations of strtod and related functions use locale-specific conversions to lower case when parsing the contents of a string NAN(n-char-sequence_opt). This has the consequence that NAN(I) is not treated as being of that form (only the initial NAN part is accepted). The syntax of n-char-sequence directly maps to the ASCII letters, digits and underscore as in identifiers, so it is unambiguous that all ASCII letters must be accepted in all locales. This patch, relative to a tree with <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2015-11/msg00258.html> (pending review) applied and depending on that patch, fixes this problem by checking directly for ASCII letters. This will have the side effect of no longer accepting 'İ' (dotted 'I') inside NAN() in Turkish locales, which seems appropriate (that letter wouldn't have been interpreted as having any meaning in the NaN payload anyway, as not acceptable to strtoull). Tested for x86_64 and x86. Fix strtol in Turkish locales (bug 19242).
The implementations of strtol and related functions use locale-specific conversions to upper case before determining whether a character is a valid letter in the argument. This means that in Turkish locales such as tr_TR.UTF-8 and tr_TR.ISO-8859-9, "i" is interpreted as not being a valid number, when if the base passed to strtol is 19 or more it should be interpreted as the number 18. ISO C explicitly says "The letters from a (or A) through z (or Z) are ascribed the values 10 through 35", so clearly intends the standard ASCII letters (otherwise you wouldn't generally have exactly 26 letters to ascribe such values) (whereas white-space must be identified according to the locale). In particular, 'i' and 'I' must be understood to be in that sequence. This patch makes the code do the case conversions and classification in the C locale; the user's locale remains used for whitespace testing (explicitly correct according to ISO C). Note that the way the code worked, the only non-ASCII letter that would previously have been accepted would have been the Turkish 'ı' (dotless 'i'), because the uppercase version of that in Turkish locales is 'I'. Also use l_tls_dtor_count to decide on object unload (BZ #18657)
When an TLS destructor is registered, we set the DF_1_NODELETE flag to signal that the object should not be destroyed. We then clear the DF_1_NODELETE flag when all destructors are called, which is wrong - the flag could have been set by other means too. This patch replaces this use of the flag by using l_tls_dtor_count directly to determine whether it is safe to unload the object. This change has the added advantage of eliminating the lock taking when calling the destructors, which could result in a deadlock. The patch also fixes the test case tst-tls-atexit - it was making an invalid dlclose call, which would just return an error silently. I have also added a detailed note on concurrency which also aims to justify why I chose the semantics I chose for accesses to l_tls_dtor_count. Thanks to Torvald for his help in getting me started on this and (literally) teaching my how to approach the problem. Change verified on x86_64; the test suite does not show any regressions due to the patch. S390: Fix "backtrace() returns infinitely deep stack frames with makecontext()" [BZ #18508].
On s390/s390x backtrace(buffer, size) returns the series of called functions until "makecontext_ret" and additional entries (up to "size") with "makecontext_ret". GDB-backtrace is also warning: "Backtrace stopped: previous frame identical to this frame (corrupt stack?)" To reproduce this scenario you have to setup a new context with makecontext() and activate it with setcontext(). See e.g. cf() function in testcase stdlib/tst-makecontext.c. Bug 18125: Call exit after last linked context.
There appears to be a discrepancy among the implementations of setcontext with regards to the function called once the last linked-to context has finished executing via setcontext. The POSIX standard says: ~~~ If the uc_link member of the ucontext_t structure pointed to by the ucp argument is equal to 0, then this context is the main context, and the thread will exit when this context returns. ~~~ It says "exit" not "exit immediately" nor "exit without running functions registered with atexit or on_exit." Therefore the AArch64, ARM, hppa and NIOS II implementations are wrong and no test detects it. It is questionable if this should even be fixed or just documented that the above 4 targets are wrong. The functions are deprecated and nobody should be using them, but at the same time it silly to have cross-target differences that make it hard to port old applications from say x86_64 to AArch64. Add new macro IN_MODULE to identify module in which source is built
The current scheme to identify which module a translation unit is built in depends on defining multiple macros IS_IN_* and also defining NOT_IN_libc if we're building a non-libc module. In addition, there is an IN_LIB macro that does effectively the same thing, but for different modules (notably the systemtap probes). This macro scheme unifies both ideas to use just one macro IN_MODULE and assign it a value depending on the module it is being built into. If the module is not defined, it defaults to MODULE_libc. Patches that follow will replace uses of IS_IN_* variables with the IS_IN() macro. libc-symbols.h has been converted already to give an example of how such a transition will look. Verified that there are no relevant binary changes. One source change that will crop up repeatedly is that of nscd_stat, since it uses the build timestamp as a constant in its logic. * Makeconfig (in-module): Get value of libof set for the translation unit. Don't require test wrappers to preserve environment variables, use more consistent environment.
One wart in the original support for test wrappers for cross testing, as noted in <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2012-10/msg00722.html>, is the requirement for test wrappers to pass a poorly-defined set of environment variables from the build system to the system running the glibc under test. Although some variables are passed explicitly via $(test-wrapper-env), including LD_* variables that simply can't be passed implicitly because of the side effects they'd have on the build system's dynamic linker, others are passed implicitly, including variables such as GCONV_PATH and LOCPATH that could potentially affect the build system's libc (so effectively relying on any such effects not breaking the wrappers). In addition, the code in cross-test-ssh.sh for preserving environment variables is fragile (it depends on how bash formats a list of exported variables, and could well break for multi-line variable definitions where the contents contain things looking like other variable definitions). This patch moves to explicitly passing environment variables via $(test-wrapper-env). Makefile variables that previously used $(test-wrapper) are split up into -before-env and -after-env parts that can be passed separately to the various .sh files used in testing, so those files can then insert environment settings between the two parts. The common default environment settings in make-test-out are made into a separate makefile variable that can also be passed to scripts, rather than many scripts duplicating those settings (for testing an installed glibc, it is desirable to have the GCONV_PATH setting on just one place, so just that one place needs to support it pointing to an installed sysroot instead of the build tree). The default settings are included in the variables such as $(test-program-prefix), so that if tests do not need any non-default settings they can continue to use single variables rather than the split-up variables. Although this patch cleans up LC_ALL=C settings (that being part of the common defaults), various LANG=C and LANGUAGE=C settings remain. Those are generally unnecessary and I propose a subsequent cleanup to remove them. LC_ALL takes precedence over LANG, and while LANGUAGE takes precedence over LC_ALL, it only does so for settings other than LC_ALL=C. So LC_ALL=C on its own is sufficient to ensure the C locale, and anything that gets LC_ALL=C does not need the other settings. While preparing this patch I noticed some tests with .sh files that appeared to do nothing beyond what the generic makefile support for tests can do (localedata/tst-wctype.sh - the makefiles support -ENV variables and .input files - and localedata/tst-mbswcs.sh - just runs five tests that could be run individually from the makefile). So I propose another subsequent cleanup to move those to using the generic support instead of special .sh files. Include LOCPATH in default test environment.
Tests run using the default $(make-test-out) automatically get GCONV_PATH and LC_ALL set, whether or not those environment variables are actually needed for the individual test. However, they do not get LOCPATH set, meaning that a large number of tests have -ENV settings just to set LOCPATH. This patch moves LOCPATH into the default environment used for all tests, on the principle that like GCONV_PATH any settings needed to use files associated with the newly built library, rather than any old installed files, are appropriate to use by default. A further motivation is that various tests using .sh files also set some combination of LC_ALL, GCONV_PATH and LOCPATH. Preferably .sh files should also use the default environment with any additions required for the individual test. Now, it was suggested in <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2014-05/msg00715.html> that various Makefile variables used in testing should be derived by composing the -before-env and -after-env variables used when explicit environment settings are required. With such a change, it's also natural for those variables to include the default settings (via some intermediate makefile variable also used in make-test-out). Because some .sh files only set variables that correspond to the default settings, or a subset thereof, and this applies to more of the .sh files once LOCPATH is in the default settings, doing so reduces the size of a revised version of <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2014-05/msg00596.html>: scripts only needing the (expanded) default settings will not need to receive the separate -before-env and -after-env variables, only the single variable they do at present. So moving LOCPATH into the default settings can reduce churn caused by subsequent patches. Use existing makefile variables for dependencies on glibc libraries.
glibc's Makeconfig defines some variables such as $(libm) and $(libdl) for linking with libraries built by glibc, and nptl/Makeconfig (included by the toplevel Makeconfig) defines others such as $(shared-thread-library). In some places glibc's Makefiles use those variables when linking against the relevant libraries, but in other places they hardcode the location of the libraries in the build tree. This patch cleans up various places to use the variables that already exist (in the case of libm, replacing several duplicate definitions of a $(link-libm) variable in subdirectory Makefiles). (It's not necessarily exactly equivalent to what the existing code does - in particular, $(shared-thread-library) includes libpthread_nonshared, but is replacing places that just referred to libpthread.so. But I think that change is desirable on the general principle of linking things as close as possible to the way in which they would be linked with an installed library, unless there is a clear reason not to do so.) To support running tests with an installed copy of glibc without needing the full build tree from when that copy was built, I think it will be useful to use such variables more generally and systematically - every time the rules for building a test refer to some file from the build tree that's also installed by glibc, use a makefile variable so that the installed-testing case can point those variables to installed copies of the files. This patch just deals with straightforward cases where such variables already exist. It's quite possible some uses of $(shared-thread-library) should actually be a new $(thread-library) variable that's set appropriately in the --disable-shared case, if those uses would in fact work without shared libraries. I didn't change the status quo that those cases hardcode use of a shared library whether or not it's actually needed (but other uses such as $(libm) and $(libdl) would now get the static library if the shared library isn't built, when some previously hardcoded use of the shared library - if they actually need shared libraries, the test itself needs an enable-shared conditional anyway). Enumerate tests with special rules in tests-special variable.
This patch is a revised and updated version of <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2014-01/msg00196.html>. In order to generate overall summaries of the results of all tests in the glibc testsuite, we need to identify and concatenate the files with the results of individual tests. Tomas Dohnalek's patch used $(common-objpfx)*/*.test-result for this. However, the normal glibc approach is explicit enumeration of the expected set of files with a given property, rather than all files matching some pattern like that. Furthermore, we would like to be able to mark tests as UNRESOLVED if the file with their results is for some reason missing, and in future we would like to be able to mark tests as UNSUPPORTED if they are disabled for a particular configuration (rather than simply having them missing from the list of tests as at present). Such handling of tests that were not run or did not record results requires an explicit enumeration of tests. For the tests following the default makefile rules, $(tests) (and $(xtests)) provides such an enumeration. Others, however, are added directly as dependencies of the "tests" and "xtests" makefile targets. This patch changes the makefiles to put them in variables tests-special and xtests-special, with appropriate dependencies on the tests listed there then being added centrally. Those variables are used in Rules and so need to be set before Rules is included in a subdirectory makefile, which is often earlier in the makefile than the dependencies were present before. We previously discussed the question of where to include Rules; see the question at <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2012-11/msg00798.html>, and a discussion in <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2013-01/msg00337.html> of why Rules is included early rather than late in subdirectory makefiles. It was necessary to avoid an indirection through the check-abi target and get the check-abi-* targets for individual libraries into the tests-special variable. The intl/ test $(objpfx)tst-gettext.out, previously built only because of dependencies from other tests, was also added to tests-special for the same reason. The entries in tests-special are the full makefile targets, complete with $(objpfx) and .out. If a future change causes tests to be named consistently with a .out suffix, this can be changed to include just the path relative to $(objpfx), without .out. Consistently include Makeconfig after defining subdir.
In <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2014-01/msg00196.html> I noted it was necessary to add includes of Makeconfig early in various subdirectory makefiles for the tests-special variable settings added by that patch to be conditional on configuration information. No-one commented on the general question there of whether Makeconfig should always be included immediately after the definition of subdir. This patch implements that early inclusion of Makeconfig in each directory (which is a lot easier than consistent placement of includes of Rules). Includes are added if needed, or moved up if already present. Subdirectory "all:" targets are removed, since Makeconfig provides one. There is potential for further cleanups I haven't done. Rules and Makerules have code such as ifneq "$(findstring env,$(origin headers))" "" headers := endif to override to empty any value of various variables that came from the environment. I think there is a case for Makeconfig setting all the subdirectory variables (other than subdir) to empty to ensure no outside value is going to take effect if a subdirectory fails to define a variable. (A list of such variables, possibly out of date and incomplete, is in manual/maint.texi.) Rules and Makerules would give errors if Makeconfig hadn't already been included, instead of including it themselves. The special code to override values coming from the environment would then be obsolete and could be removed. Generate .test-result files for tests with special rules.
This patch, an updated version of <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2014-01/msg00194.html> now proposed for inclusion in glibc, extends the generation of PASS and FAIL status in .test-result files for individual tests to cover tests with their own custom makefile rules. This is just adding $(evaluate-test) calls to all such rules, since tests with multiple commands were previously split into separate tests. C++11 thread_local destructors support
This feature is specifically for the C++ compiler to offload calling thread_local object destructors on thread program exit, to glibc. This is to overcome the possible complication of destructors of thread_local objects getting called after the DSO in which they're defined is unloaded by the dynamic linker. The DSO is marked as 'unloadable' if it has a constructed thread_local object and marked as 'unloadable' again when all the constructed thread_local objects defined in it are destroyed. |
