With upcoming fix for BZ#12683, pthread cancellation does not act for:
1. If syscall is blocked but with some side effects already having
taken place (e.g. a partial read or write).
2. After the syscall has returned.
The main change is due the fact programs need to act in syscalls with
side-effects (for instance, to avoid leak of allocated resources or
handle partial read/write).
This patch changes the NPTL testcase that assumes the old behavior and
also changes the tst-backtrace{5,6} to ignore the cancellable wrappers.
Checked on i686-linux-gnu, x86_64-linux-gnu, x86_64-linux-gnux32,
aarch64-linux-gnu, arm-linux-gnueabihf, powerpc64le-linux-gnu,
powerpc-linux-gnu, sparcv9-linux-gnu, and sparc64-linux-gnu.

Use PRINTF_FORTIFY instead of _IO_FLAGS2_FORTIFY (bug 11319)
a call to sprintf or vsprintf with overlapping buffers, for instance
vsprintf (buf, "%sTEXT", buf), would append `TEXT' into buf, while a
call to snprintf or vsnprintf would override the contents of buf.
After the aforementioned commit, the behavior of sprintf and vsprintf
changed (so that they also override the contents of buf).
This patch reverts this behavioral change, because it will likely break
applications that rely on the previous behavior, even though it is
undefined by ISO C. As noted by Szabolcs Nagy, this is used in SPEC2017
507.cactuBSSN_r/src/PUGH/PughUtils.c:

More important to notice is the fact that the overwriting of the
destination buffer is not the only behavior affected by the refactoring.
Before the refactoring, sprintf and vsprintf would use _IO_str_jumps,
whereas __sprintf_chk and __vsprintf_chk would use _IO_str_chk_jumps.
After the refactoring, all use _IO_str_chk_jumps, which would make
sprintf and vsprintf report buffer overflows and terminate the program.
This patch also reverts this behavior, by installing the appropriate
jump table for each *sprintf functions.
Apart from reverting the changes, this patch adds a test case that has
the old behavior hardcoded, so that regressions are noticed if something
else unintentionally changes the behavior.
Tested for powerpc64le.
The _chk variants of all of the printf functions become much simpler.
This is the last thing that we needed _IO_acquire_lock_clear_flags2
for, so it can go as well. I took the opportunity to make the headers
included and the names of all local variables consistent across all the
affected files.
Since we ultimately want to get rid of __no_long_double as well, it
must be possible to get all of the nontrivial effects of the _chk
functions by calling the _internal functions with appropriate flags.
For most of the __(v)xprintf_chk functions, this is covered by
PRINTF_FORTIFY plus some up-front argument checks that can be
duplicated. However, __(v)sprintf_chk installs a custom jump table so
that it can crash instead of overflowing the output buffer. This
functionality is moved to __vsprintf_internal, which now has a
'maxlen' argument like __vsnprintf_internal; to get the unsafe
behavior of ordinary (v)sprintf, pass -1 for that argument.
obstack_printf_chk and obstack_vprintf_chk are no longer in the same
file.
As a side-effect of the unification of both fortified and non-fortified
vdprintf initialization, this patch fixes bug 11319 for __dprintf_chk
and __vdprintf_chk, which was previously fixed only for dprintf and
vdprintf by the commit

Fix reporting of I/O errors in *dprintf functions.
This patch adds a test case to avoid regressions.
Tested for powerpc and powerpc64le.
There are a lot more printf variants than there are scanf variants,
and the code for setting up and tearing down their custom FILE
variants around the call to __vf(w)printf is more complicated and
variable. Therefore, I have added _internal versions of all the
v*printf variants, rather than introducing helper routines so that
they can all directly call __vf(w)printf_internal, as was done with
scanf.
As with the scanf changes, in this patch the _internal functions still
look at the environmental mode bits and all callers pass 0 for the
flags parameter.
Several of the affected public functions had _IO_ name aliases that
were not exported (but, in one case, appeared in libio.h anyway);
I was originally planning to leave them as aliases to avoid having
to touch internal callers, but it turns out ldbl_*_alias only work
for exported symbols, so they've all been removed instead. It also
turns out there were hardly any internal callers. _IO_vsprintf and
_IO_vfprintf *are* exported, so those two stick around.
Summary for the changes to each of the affected symbols:
_IO_vfprintf, _IO_vsprintf:
All internal calls removed, thus the internal declarations, as well
as uses of libc_hidden_proto and libc_hidden_def, were also removed.
The external symbol is now exposed via uses of ldbl_strong_alias
to __vfprintf_internal and __vsprintf_internal, respectively.
_IO_vasprintf, _IO_vdprintf, _IO_vsnprintf,
_IO_vfwprintf, _IO_vswprintf,
_IO_obstack_vprintf, _IO_obstack_printf:
All internal calls removed, thus declaration in internal headers
were also removed. They were never exported, so there are no
aliases tying them to the internal functions. I.e.: entirely gone.
__vsnprintf:
Internal calls were always preceded by macros such as
#define __vsnprintf _IO_vsnprintf, and
#define __vsnprintf vsnprintf
The macros were removed and their uses replaced with calls to the
new internal function __vsnprintf_internal. Since there were no
internal calls, the internal declaration was also removed. The
external symbol is preserved with ldbl_weak_alias to ___vsnprintf.
__vfwprintf:
All internal calls converted into calls to __vfwprintf_internal,
thus the internal declaration was removed. The function is now a
wrapper that calls __vfwprintf_internal. The external symbol is
preserved.
__vswprintf:
Similarly, but no external symbol.
__vasprintf, __vdprintf, __vfprintf, __vsprintf:
New internal wrappers. Not exported.
vasprintf, vdprintf, vfprintf, vsprintf, vsnprintf,

These functions used to be aliases to the respective _IO_* function,
they are now aliases to their respective __* functions.
Tested for powerpc and powerpc64le.
These unmangled function pointers reside on the heap and could
be targeted by exploit writers, effectively bypassing libio vtable
validation. Instead, we ignore these pointers and always call
malloc or free.
In theory, this is a backwards-incompatible change, but using the
global heap instead of the user-supplied callback functions should
have little application impact. (The old libstdc++ implementation
exposed this functionality via a public, undocumented constructor
in its strstreambuf class.)
No glibc configuration uses the present debug/backtrace.c, whereas
several #include the x86_64 version. The x86_64 version is
effectively a generic one (using _Unwind_Backtrace from libgcc, which
works much more reliably than the built-in functions used by
debug/backtrace.c). This patch moves it to debug/backtrace.c and
removes all the #includes of the x86_64 version from other
architectures which are no longer required.
I do not know whether all the other architecture-specific backtrace
implementations that are based on _Unwind_Backtrace are required, or
whether, where their differences from the generic version do something
useful, suitable hooks could be added to the generic version to reduce
the duplication involved.
Tested with build-many-glibcs.py that installed stripped shared
libraries are unchanged by this patch.

I used __fpos_t and __fpos64_t instead of fpos_t and fpos64_t because
the definitions of fpos_t and fpos64_t depend on the largefile mode.
I used __ssize_t and __gnuc_va_list in a handful of headers where
namespace cleanliness might be relevant even though they're
internal-use-only. In all other cases, I used the public-namespace
name.
There are a tiny handful of places where I left a use of 'struct _IO_FILE'
alone, because it was being used together with 'struct _IO_FILE_plus'
or 'struct _IO_FILE_complete' in the same arithmetic expression.
Because this patch was almost entirely done with search and replace, I
may have introduced indentation botches. I did proofread the diff,
but I may have missed something.
The ChangeLog below calls out all of the places where this was not a
pure search-and-replace change.

To support Shadow Stack (SHSTK) in Intel Control-flow Enforcement
Technology (CET) in setjmp/longjmp, we need to save shadow stack
pointer in jmp_buf. The __saved_mask field in jmp_buf has type
of __sigset_t. On Linux, __sigset_t is defined as

For Linux/x86, we can shrink __sigset_t used by __saved_mask in jmp_buf
to add paddings for shadow stack pointer. As long as the new __sigset_t

it should work correctly.
This patch adds an internal header file, <setjmpP.h>, to define
__jmp_buf_sigset_t for __saved_mask in jmp_buf for Linux/x86 with a
space to store shadow stack pointer. It verifies __jmp_buf_sigset_t has
the suitable size for the __sigprocmask system call. A run-time test,
tst-saved_mask-1.c, is added to verify that size of __jmp_buf_sigset_t
is sufficient. If its size is too small, the test fails with

debug/pcprofiledump.c contains code that tries to handle other-endian
data. This uses a condition "(word & 0xfffffff0) == bswap_32
(0xdeb00000)". This condition is always false (the LHS always has the
low four bits zero, the RHS doesn't); a correct comparison would use
0x0fffffff. This results in -Werror=tautological-compare build
failures with the tile version of bits/byteswap.h and mainline GCC.

glibc defines the stack_t type with the tag struct sigaltstack. This
is not permitted by POSIX; sigaltstack is only reserved with file
scope in the namespace of ordinary identifiers, not the tag namespace,
and in the case where stack_t is obtained from ucontext.h rather than
signal.h, it's not reserved with file scope at all.
This patch removes the tag accordingly and updates uses in glibc of
struct sigaltstack. This is similar to the removal of the "struct
siginfo" tag a few years ago: C++ name mangling changes are an
unavoidable consequence. A NEWS item is added to note the changed
mangling. There is inevitably some risk of breaking builds of
anything that relies on the struct sigaltstack name (though the first
few hits I looked at from codesearch.debian.net generally seemed to
involve code that could use the stack_t name conditionally, so
depending on how they determine the conditionals they may work with
glibc not defining the struct tag anyway).

posix/wordexp-test.c used libc-internal.h for PTR_ALIGN_DOWN; similar
to what was done with libc-diag.h, I have split the definitions of
cast_to_integer, ALIGN_UP, ALIGN_DOWN, PTR_ALIGN_UP, and PTR_ALIGN_DOWN
to a new header, libc-pointer-arith.h.
It then occurred to me that the remaining declarations in libc-internal.h
are mostly to do with early initialization, and probably most of the
files including it, even in the core code, don't need it anymore. Indeed,
only 19 files actually need what remains of libc-internal.h. 23 others
need libc-diag.h instead, and 12 need libc-pointer-arith.h instead.
No file needs more than one of them, and 16 don't need any of them!
So, with this patch, libc-internal.h stops including libc-diag.h as

gets has the dubious honor of being the only C89 library feature that
has been completely removed from the current C and C++ standards.
glibc follows suit by not declaring it in _GNU_SOURCE mode either,
but it remains present in older compatibility modes. Internally,
two test cases need to see stdio.h make the declaration, but all our
internal code is of course compiled under _GNU_SOURCE. This is currently
kludged by duplicating the gets declaration, fortify wrapper and all,
in include/stdio.h. Also, the conditional in the public headers for
deciding when to declare gets is complicated and repeated in two places.
This patch adds a new macro to features.h that encapsulates the
complicated rule for when to declare gets. stdio.h and bits/stdio2.h
then simply test __GLIBC_USE (DEPRECATED_GETS), and instead of having
a duplicate gets declaration in include/stdio.h, debug/tst-chk1.c and
stdio-common/tst-gets.c can force gets to be declared.

Add a hidden __stack_chk_fail_local alias to libc.so,
and make sure that on targets which use __stack_chk_fail,
this does not introduce a local PLT reference into libc.so.
explicit_bzero(s, n) is the same as memset(s, 0, n), except that the
compiler is not allowed to delete a call to explicit_bzero even if the
memory pointed to by 's' is dead after the call. Right now, this effect
is achieved externally by having explicit_bzero be a function whose
semantics are unknown to the compiler, and internally, with a no-op
asm statement that clobbers memory. This does mean that small
explicit_bzero operations cannot be expanded inline as small memset
operations can, but on the other hand, small memset operations do get
deleted by the compiler. Hopefully full compiler support for
explicit_bzero will happen relatively soon.
There are two new tests: test-explicit_bzero.c verifies the
visible semantics in the same way as the existing test-bzero.c,
and tst-xbzero-opt.c verifies the not-being-optimized-out property.
The latter is conceptually based on a test written by Matthew Dempsky
for the OpenBSD regression suite.
The crypt() implementation has an immediate use for this new feature.
We avoid having to add a GLIBC_PRIVATE alias for explicit_bzero
by running all of libcrypt's calls through the fortified variant,
__explicit_bzero_chk, which is in the impl namespace anyway. Currently
I'm not aware of anything in libc proper that needs this, but the
glue is all in place if it does become necessary. The legacy DES
implementation wasn't bothering to clear its buffers, so I added that,
mostly for consistency's sake.

Add entries for explicit_bzero and __explicit_bzero_chk.
The new test framework changed the call stacks. The weak attribute
acts as a strong compiler barrier. Some static functions had to be
declared extern as a consequence.
This commit puts all libio vtables in a dedicated, read-only ELF
section, so that they are consecutive in memory. Before any indirect
jump, the vtable pointer is checked against the section boundaries,
and the process is terminated if the vtable pointer does not fall into
the special ELF section.
To enable backwards compatibility, a special flag variable
(_IO_accept_foreign_vtables), protected by the pointer guard, avoids
process termination if libio stream object constructor functions have
been called earlier. Such constructor functions are called by the GCC
2.95 libstdc++ library, and this mechanism ensures compatibility with
old binaries. Existing callers inside glibc of these functions are
adjusted to call the original functions, not the wrappers which enable
vtable compatiblity.
The compatibility mechanism is used to enable passing FILE * objects
across a static dlopen boundary, too.
Currently, printf needs more stack space than what is available with
SIGSTKSZ. This commit use the the write system call directly instead.
Also use sig_atomic_t for the “pass” variable (for general
correctness), and restore signal handlers to their defaults, to avoid
masking crashes.
Modify a warning message so that it doesn't sound as an error, e.g.:
"Obtained backtrace with 6 functions (but wanted at least 6)"
Update a comment too.
This mostly automatically-generated patch converts 113 function
definitions in glibc from old-style K&R to prototype-style. Following
my other recent such patches, this one deals with the case of function
definitions in files that either contain assertions or where grep
suggested they might contain assertions - and thus where it isn't
possible to use a simple object code comparison as a sanity check on
the correctness of the patch, because line numbers are changed.
A few such automatically-generated changes needed to be supplemented
by manual changes for the result to compile. openat64 had a prototype
declaration with "..." but an old-style definition in
sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/dl-openat64.c, and "..." needed adding to the
generated prototype in the definition (I've filed
<https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=68024> for diagnosing
such cases in GCC; the old state was undefined behavior not requiring
a diagnostic, but one seems a good idea). In addition, as Florian has
noted regparm attribute mismatches between declaration and definition
are only diagnosed for prototype definitions, and five functions
needed internal_function added to their definitions (in the case of
__pthread_mutex_cond_lock, via the macro definition of
__pthread_mutex_lock) to compile on i386.
After this patch is in, remaining old-style definitions are probably
most readily fixed manually before we can turn on
-Wold-style-definition for all builds.

Hi, as I wrote in previous patches a performance of checked strcpy and
stpcpy is terrible as these don't use sse2 and are around four times
slower that strcpy and stpcpy now.
As this bug shows that these functions are not performance sensitive I
decided just to improve generic implementation instead for easier
maintainance.

I think the last clause of the conditional,

may be backward. The code should call the runtime-checking function
if __n is not constant, or if __n is known to be LARGER than the size
of the destination.
As discussed starting at
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2014-11/msg00323.html>, this
patch makes the glibc build use -Werror by default to avoid
accidentally adding new warnings to the build. The configure option
--disable-werror can be used to disable this.
-Wno-error=undef is temporarily used because the build isn't clean
regarding -Wundef warnings. The idea is that once the remaining
-Wundef warnings have been cleaned up (in at least one configuration),
-Wno-error=undef will be removed.
I get a clean build and test on x86_64 (GCC 4.9 branch) with this
patch. The expectation is that this may well break the build for some
other configurations, and people seeing such breakage should make
appropriate fixes to fix or suppress the warnings for their
configurations. In some cases that may involve using pragmas as the
right fix (I think that will be right for the -Wno-inline issue for
MIPS I referred to in
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2012-11/msg00798.html>, for
example), in some cases -Wno-error in sysdeps makefiles (__restore_rt
in MIPS sigaction, for example), in some cases substantive fixes for
the warnings.
Note that if, with a view to listing all the warnings then fixing them
all, you just look for "warning:" in output from building and testing
with --disable-werror, you'll see lots of warnings from the linker
about functions such as tmpnam. Those warnings can be ignored - only
compiler warnings are relevant to -Werror, not linker warnings.

test-string.h, after it gets defined by those headers, and it never
gets undefined.

is the code to remove $(tests-ifunc) and $(xtests-ifunc) conditionally
from tests and xtests. This patch removes the useless defines and
tests of TEST_IFUNC and the associated useless tests and makefile
code. It thereby fixes a series of warnings

mach; all other architectures use the default. Check to see if the
macro is defined in addition to whether it is set to a non-zero value.
This also has the side-effect of fixing a couple of Wundef warnings
raised from pagecopy.h. The generated code is identical before and
after this patch.
Tests run using the default $(make-test-out) automatically get
GCONV_PATH and LC_ALL set, whether or not those environment variables
are actually needed for the individual test. However, they do not get
LOCPATH set, meaning that a large number of tests have -ENV settings
just to set LOCPATH.
This patch moves LOCPATH into the default environment used for all
tests, on the principle that like GCONV_PATH any settings needed to
use files associated with the newly built library, rather than any old
installed files, are appropriate to use by default.
A further motivation is that various tests using .sh files also set
some combination of LC_ALL, GCONV_PATH and LOCPATH. Preferably .sh
files should also use the default environment with any additions
required for the individual test. Now, it was suggested in
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2014-05/msg00715.html> that
various Makefile variables used in testing should be derived by
composing the -before-env and -after-env variables used when explicit
environment settings are required. With such a change, it's also
natural for those variables to include the default settings (via some
intermediate makefile variable also used in make-test-out).
Because some .sh files only set variables that correspond to the
default settings, or a subset thereof, and this applies to more of the
.sh files once LOCPATH is in the default settings, doing so reduces
the size of a revised version of

only needing the (expanded) default settings will not need to receive
the separate -before-env and -after-env variables, only the single
variable they do at present. So moving LOCPATH into the default
settings can reduce churn caused by subsequent patches.

If the longjmp checking code is slightly broken, this code can loop
forever which isn't too helpful. Add a sanity check to keep that
from happening.

noted it was necessary to add includes of Makeconfig early in various
subdirectory makefiles for the tests-special variable settings added
by that patch to be conditional on configuration information. No-one
commented on the general question there of whether Makeconfig should
always be included immediately after the definition of subdir.
This patch implements that early inclusion of Makeconfig in each
directory (which is a lot easier than consistent placement of includes
of Rules). Includes are added if needed, or moved up if already
present. Subdirectory "all:" targets are removed, since Makeconfig
provides one.
There is potential for further cleanups I haven't done. Rules and
Makerules have code such as

to override to empty any value of various variables that came from the
environment. I think there is a case for Makeconfig setting all the
subdirectory variables (other than subdir) to empty to ensure no
outside value is going to take effect if a subdirectory fails to
define a variable. (A list of such variables, possibly out of date
and incomplete, is in manual/maint.texi.) Rules and Makerules would
give errors if Makeconfig hadn't already been included, instead of
including it themselves. The special code to override values coming
from the environment would then be obsolete and could be removed.
Tested x86_64, including that installed binaries are identical before
and after the patch.

When debugging failures in this test, it's helpful to see as much output
as possible. So rather than returning immediately, let the code run as
far as it can. We still mark failures as soon as they happen.

This patch fixes backtrace for PPC32 and PPC64 to correctly handle
signal trampolines. The 'debug/tst-backtrace6.c' also check for
SA_SIGINFO handling, where is triggers another vDSO symbols for PPC32.
The -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE flags are being added to the test-specific CFLAGS
values when they should be the test-specific CPPFLAGS values. Otherwise
the values don't override the user-specified CPPFLAGS and might end up
breaking the tests.
