The old code uses errno as the primary indicator for success or
failure. This is wrong because errno is only set for specific
combinations of the status return value and the h_errno variable.
This patch consolidates all the non cancellable writev calls to use
the __writev_nocancel identifier. For non cancellable targets it will
be just a macro to call the default respective symbol while on Linux
will be a internal one.
Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu, x86_64-linux-gnu-x32, and i686-linux-gnu.

A dot-less host name without an /etc/resolv.conf file caused an
assertion failure in update_from_conf because the function would not
deal correctly with the empty search list case.
Thanks to Andreas Schwab for debugging assistence.
This commit enhances the stub resolver to reload the configuration
in the per-thread _res object if the /etc/resolv.conf file has
changed. The resolver checks whether the application has modified
_res and will not overwrite the _res object in that case.
The struct resolv_context mechanism is used to check the
configuration file only once per name lookup.
This commit adds the remaining unchanging members (which are loaded
from /etc/resolv.conf) to struct resolv_conf.
The extended name server list is currently not used by the stub
resolver. The switch depends on a cleanup: The _u._ext.nssocks
array stores just a single socket, and needs to be replaced with
a single socket value.
(The compatibility gethostname implementation does not use the
extended addres sort list, either. Updating the compat code is
not worthwhile.)
This change uses the extended resolver state in struct resolv_conf to
store the search list. If applications have not patched the _res
object directly, this extended search list will be used by the stub
resolver during name resolution.
This change provides additional resolver configuration state which
is not exposed through the _res ABI. It reuses the existing
initstamp field in the supposedly-private part of _res. Some effort
is undertaken to avoid memory safety issues introduced by applications
which directly patch the _res object.
With this commit, only the initstamp field is moved into struct
resolv_conf. Additional members will be added later, eventually
migrating the entire resolver configuration.
struct resolv_context objects provide a temporary resolver context
which does not change during a name lookup operation. Only when the
outmost context is created, the stub resolver configuration is
verified to be current (at present, only against previous res_init
calls). Subsequent attempts to obtain the context will reuse the
result of the initial verification operation.
struct resolv_context can also be extended in the future to store
data which needs to be deallocated during thread cancellation.
Some Linux kernels have very aggressive ICMP rate limiting on the
loopback interface. This commit introduces a minimal echoing DNS server
inside the network namespace, so that there is no need for ICMP error
messages anymore.
Many callers of __res_maybe_init also call _res_hconf_init.
Additional calls to the latter do not hurt because the function
does its work only once. (/etc/hosts.conf is not reloaded or
even checked for changes.) This means that we can simplify the
code by calling _res_hconf_init directly from __res_vinit.
Every file that uses libc_hidden_nolink_sunrpc or
libnsl_hidden_nolink_def needs to include shlib-compat.h. Currently,
most of them are getting it via stdio.h, because libio.h refers to
SHLIB_COMPAT when _LIBC is defined, so it includes shlib-compat.h. My
experimental patch to not install libio.h breaks that chain; stdio.h
no longer pulls in libio.h even for internal users.
Accordingly, this patch adds #include <shlib-compat.h> to many files
in sunrpc/ and nis/. There are also a small number of really obvious
fixups to includes that caught my eye while proofreading the patch -
not including headers twice in a row, not worrying about portability
to Ultrix anymore, sort of thing.

The types affected are __sig_atomic_t, sig_atomic_t, __sigset_t,
sigset_t, sigval_t, sigevent_t, and siginfo_t. __sig_atomic_t is a
scalar, so it's now directly available from bits/types.h. The others
get bits/types/ headers.
Side effects include: There have been small changes to which
non-signal headers expose which subset of the signal-related types.
A couple of architectures' nested siginfo_t fields had to be renamed
to prevent undesired macro expansion. Internal code that wants to
manipulate signal masks must now include <sigsetops.h> (which is not
installed) and should be aware that __sigaddset, __sigandset,
__sigdelset, __sigemptyset, and __sigorset no longer return a value
(unlike the public API). Relatedly, the public signal.h no longer
declares any of those functions. The obsolete sigmask() macro no
longer has a system-specific definition -- in the cases where it
matters, it didn't work anyway.
New Linux architectures should create bits/siginfo-arch.h and/or
bits/siginfo-consts-arch.h to customize their siginfo_t, rather than
duplicating everything in bits/siginfo.h (which no longer exists).
Add new __SI_* macros if necessary. Ports to other operating systems
are strongly encouraged to generalize this scheme further.

These __need macros are only used internally, by nptl/descr.h.
However, including all of resolv.h from descr.h causes build failures
due to resolv.h's dozens of pseudo-struct-field macros, some of which
collide with struct fields in NPTL internal data structures.
Similarly, including all of list.h from descr.h produces an include
cycle, atomic.h -> atomic-machine.h -> tls.h -> descr.h -> list.h ->
atomic.h, and then list.h tries to use atomic.h macros that haven't
been defined yet. So we do need mini-headers for these. In the
list.h case I called it include/list_t.h since it isn't going to be
installed.

The address family splitting via format_ai_family made unpredictable
the place where the canonname field was printed. This commit adjusts
the implementation so that the ai_flags is checked for consistency
across the list, and ai_canonname must only be present on the first
list element.
Tests for AI_CANONNAME are added to resolv/tst-resolv-basic.
conform/ namespace tests of arpa/inet.h, netdb.h and netinet/in.h fail
for UNIX98 and XPG42 because of inclusion of stdint.h, which defines
macros not permitted in those headers for those standards. UNIX98
allows them to include inttypes.h, but (predating C99) has restricted
inttypes.h contents (not yet tested in the conform/ tests) not
including those macros; XPG4.2 has no such permission and no
inttypes.h / stdint.h at all.
This patch rearranges the headers to avoid this issue. intN_t
definitions move to bits/stdint-intn.h, and uintN_t definitions to
bits/stdint-uintn.h. (These are not bits/types/ headers because they
each define four types. They are separate rather than just a single
header because sys/types.h defines intN_t but u_intN_t rather than
uintN_t - and while sys/types.h could define uintN_t because of the
POSIX reservation of *_t, existing practice there is largely to
condition types on appropriate feature test macros, and indeed there
is at least one open bug report (14553) about a type that's not
so-conditioned, so maybe types there should actually have conditions
added where appropriate.) The affected network headers are then made
to include bits/stdint-uintn.h instead of stdint.h. This allows six
XFAILs to be removed.
This doesn't do anything about inttypes.h defining more than it should
for UNIX98, but we don't have conformtest expectations for that case
at present (and my inclination is that a fix for that should be as
local as possible - affecting only inttypes.h, not stdint.h, only for
the case of __USE_UNIX98 && !__USE_ISOC99).
Tested for x86_64.

EDNS is disabled by default (so there is interoperability issue), and
the fallback code is problematic because it prevents an application
from obtaining DNSSEC data after a FORMERR response.
This bug did not affect name resolution because those functions
indirectly call ns_name_pack with a buffer which is always larger
than the generated query packet, even in the case of the
longest-possible domain name.
The RES_F_* constants are only used with the private _res._flags
member. RES_EXHAUSTIVE is unused. The removed function
declarations refer to functions not actually exported by glibc,
so they are unusable by applications.
posix/wordexp-test.c used libc-internal.h for PTR_ALIGN_DOWN; similar
to what was done with libc-diag.h, I have split the definitions of
cast_to_integer, ALIGN_UP, ALIGN_DOWN, PTR_ALIGN_UP, and PTR_ALIGN_DOWN
to a new header, libc-pointer-arith.h.
It then occurred to me that the remaining declarations in libc-internal.h
are mostly to do with early initialization, and probably most of the
files including it, even in the core code, don't need it anymore. Indeed,
only 19 files actually need what remains of libc-internal.h. 23 others
need libc-diag.h instead, and 12 need libc-pointer-arith.h instead.
No file needs more than one of them, and 16 don't need any of them!
So, with this patch, libc-internal.h stops including libc-diag.h as
well as losing the pointer arithmetic macros, and all including files
are adjusted.

This change also removes the preprocessor-based function renaming.
It also applied to tests in resolv/, which ended up running against
the historic functions.
_endhtent was not part of the ABI because it is not listed in the
resolv/Versions file.
The changes to fix bug 20729 introduced an error which removed an
ignore diagnostic from -O2 by using the new -Os related macro.
This broke ppc64 builds. This commit fixes the mistake.
Tested on x86, x86_64, ppc64, ppc64le, arm, aarch64, and s390x.
This commit adds a new DIAG_IGNORE_Os_NEEDS_COMMENT which is only
enabled when compiling with -Os. This allows developers working on
-Os enabled builds to mark false-positive warnings without impacting the
warnings emitted at -O2.
Then using the new DIAG_IGNORE_Os_NEEDS_COMMENT we fix 6 warnings
generated with GCC 5 to get -Os builds working again.
In ns_name_ntop, the NS_CMPRSFLGS check is no longer needed because
labellen (called earlier) already rejects everything which is not
a plain label (compression references and extended label types).
Many headers are expected to expose a subset of the type definitions
in time.h. time.h has a whole bunch of messy logic for conditionally
defining some its types and structs, but, as best I can tell, this
has never worked 100%. In particular, __need_timespec is ineffective
if _TIME_H has already been defined, which means that if you compile
#include <time.h>
#include <sched.h>
with e.g. -fsyntax-only -std=c89 -Wall -Wsystem-headers, you will get
In file included from test.c:2:0:
/usr/include/sched.h:74:57: warning: "struct timespec" declared inside
parameter list will not be visible outside of this definition or declaration
extern int sched_rr_get_interval (__pid_t __pid, struct timespec *__t) __THROW;
^~~~~~~~
And if you want to _use_ sched_rr_get_interval in a TU compiled that
way, you're hosed.
This patch replaces all of that with small bits/types/TYPE.h headers
as introduced earlier. time.h and bits/time.h are now *much* simpler,
and a lot of other headers are slightly simpler.

New wrapper headers.
The types u_char, u_short, u_int, u_long, ushort, uint, ulong, u_int8_t,
u_int16_t, u_int32_t, u_int64_t, quad_t, and u_quad_t are BSDisms that
have never been standardized. While glibc should continue to *provide*
these types for compatibility's sake, its public headers should not
use them.
The meat of this change was mechanically generated by the following
shell command:
perl -pi~ -e '
s/\b(__)?u_char\b/unsigned char/g;
s/\b(__)?u_?short\b/unsigned short/g;
s/\b(__)?u_?int\b/unsigned int/g;

$(find . \( -false $(sed 's/^/-o -name /' all-installed-headers) \
\) -printf '%P\n' | sort -u)))
where 'all-installed-headers' was a list of the basenames of all installed
header files, manually extracted from the Makefiles. Non-installed
wrapper headers in include/ are also adjusted, for consistency.
I then manually fixed up indentation and line-wrapping.
sys/types.h and bits/types.h are excluded because they must continue
to define the u_* types (under __USE_MISC) for compatibility with
applications. They do not use these types themselves.
All headers that (transitively) include rpc/types.h are also excluded,
for three reasons. First, the u_* types are defined by rpc/types.h,
unconditionally (not just under __USE_MISC) so they are logically part
of the SunRPC API. Second, many of those headers appear to be
machine-generated. Third, it's my understanding that we are getting
rid of as much of SunRPC as possible in the near future.
(The one file under sunrpc/ that's touched, sunrpc/rpc/rpc_des.h, does
*not* include rpc/types.h. This may itself be a bug.)
After changing from u_intNN_t to uintNN_t, a number of headers now
need to include stdint.h to pick up those types. It might be more
hygenic, namespace-wise, to use __uintNN_t instead, but none of these
headers are bound by ISO or POSIX to do so, and it's unlikely that
anyone using them will be bothered. (The two files that were using
__-prefixed versions of the u_types, sysdeps/mach/hurd/net/route.h and
sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/net/route.h, both already also contained uses of
the unprefixed versions.)
Some of these files directly included features.h and/or sys/cdefs.h,
which I removed, as the style generally seems to be to let sys/types.h
do that for us. (This does not change the set of definitions exposed
by any header; sys/types.h unconditionally includes both features.h
and sys/cdefs.h.)
One file included asm/types.h unnecessarily.

_LIBC, __USE_XOPEN2K8, and __STDC_VERSION__ are not always defined.
It seems to me that _LIBC should not appear in installed headers, but
avoiding that for argp specifically would require more surgery than
feels appropriate for this patch set. It's possible that
"#ifdef _LIBC" would be sufficient, but I wanted to be conservative.
All three versions of bits/socket.h want to know whether __flexarr
will produce a real flexible array member -- specifically, one that
doesn't alter sizeof(the structure containing it). They were testing
for this with a complicated #if condition that did not agree with
sys/cdefs.h and that tripped -Wundef warnings under -std=c90.
I added a new macro to sys/cdefs.h, __glibc_c99_flexarr_available,
which reveals exactly what these headers want to know. I also took
the opportunity to flatten the rather messy conditional nest defining
__flexarr.
* argp/argp.h: Check whether _LIBC is defined before expanding it.
* posix/glob.h: Check whether __USE_XOPEN2K8 is defined instead
of expanding it.
* misc/sys/cdefs.h: Tidy up conditional nest defining __flexarr.
Define __glibc_c99_flexarr_available to 1 when the compiler
supports C99-compatible flexible array members, 0 otherwise.
* sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/bits/socket.h
* sysdeps/mach/hurd/bits/socket.h
* bits/socket.h: Use __glibc_c99_flexarr_available in
definitions of struct cmsghdr and CMSG_DATA.
The macros are no longer up-to-date, and the classification is not
useful. In this particular case, removal without prior deprecation
seems the right approach.
_res_hconf.initialized was not suitable for use in a multi-threaded
environment due to the lack of atomics and memory barriers. Use of it was
also unnecessary because _res_hconf_init did the right thing by using
__libc_once. This patch fixes the glibc-internal uses by just calling
_res_hconf_init unconditionally, and switches to a release MO atomic store
for _res_hconf.initialized to fix the glibc side of the synchronization
problem (which will maintain backward compatibility, but cannot fix the
lack of acquire MO on any glibc-external loads).

Previously, we allocated room in the result space before the check,
leaving uninitialized data there in case the check failed.
This also consolidates the behavior between single (A or AAAA) and
dual (A and AAAA in parallel) queries. Single queries checked
the record length against the QTYPE, not the RRTYPE.
In various error scenarios (for example, if the server closes the
TCP connection before sending the full response), send_vc can return
without resetting the *resplen2 value. This can pass uninitialized
or unexpected data to the caller.
Since commit 44d20bca52 (Implement
second fallback mode for DNS requests), there is a code path which
returns early, before *resplen2 is initialized. This happens if the
name server address is immediately recognized as invalid (because of
lack of protocol support, or if it is a broadcast address such
255.255.255.255, or another invalid address).
If this happens and *resplen2 was non-zero (which is the case if a
previous query resulted in a failure), __libc_res_nquery would reuse
an existing second answer buffer. This answer has been previously
identified as unusable (for example, it could be an NXDOMAIN
response). Due to the presence of a second answer, no name server
switching will occur. The result is a name resolution failure,
although a successful resolution would have been possible if name
servers have been switched and queries had proceeded along the search
path.
The above paragraph still simplifies the situation. Before glibc
2.23, if the second answer needed malloc, the stub resolver would
still attempt to reuse the second answer, but this is not possible
because __libc_res_nsearch has freed it, after the unsuccessful call
to __libc_res_nquerydomain, and set the buffer pointer to NULL. This
eventually leads to an assertion failure in __libc_res_nquery:
/* Make sure both hp and hp2 are defined */
assert((hp != NULL) && (hp2 != NULL));
If assertions are disabled, the consequence is a NULL pointer
dereference on the next line.
Starting with glibc 2.23, as a result of commit
e9db92d3ac (CVE-2015-7547: getaddrinfo()
stack-based buffer overflow (Bug 18665)), the second answer is always
allocated with malloc. This means that the assertion failure happens
with small responses as well because there is no buffer to reuse, as
soon as there is a name resolution failure which triggers a search for
an answer along the search path.
This commit addresses the issue by ensuring that *resplen2 is
initialized before the send_dg function returns.
This commit also addresses a bug where an invalid second reply is
incorrectly returned as a valid to the caller.
The number of currently defined nameservers is stored in ->nscount,
whereas ->_u._ext.nscount is set by __libc_res_nsend only after local
initializations.
* A stack-based buffer overflow was found in libresolv when invoked from
libnss_dns, allowing specially crafted DNS responses to seize control
of execution flow in the DNS client. The buffer overflow occurs in
the functions send_dg (send datagram) and send_vc (send TCP) for the
NSS module libnss_dns.so.2 when calling getaddrinfo with AF_UNSPEC
family. The use of AF_UNSPEC triggers the low-level resolver code to
send out two parallel queries for A and AAAA. A mismanagement of the
buffers used for those queries could result in the response of a query
writing beyond the alloca allocated buffer created by
_nss_dns_gethostbyname4_r. Buffer management is simplified to remove
the overflow. Thanks to the Google Security Team and Red Hat for
reporting the security impact of this issue, and Robert Holiday of
Ciena for reporting the related bug 18665. (CVE-2015-7547)

One common case of __GNUC_PREREQ (4, 7) conditionals is use of
diagnostic control pragmas for -Wmaybe-uninitialized, an option
introduced in GCC 4.7 where older GCC needed -Wuninitialized to be
controlled instead if the warning appeared with older GCC. This patch
removes such conditionals.
(There remain several older uses of -Wno-uninitialized in makefiles
that still need to be converted to diagnostic control pragmas if the
issue is still present with current sources and supported GCC
versions, and it's likely that in most cases those pragmas also will
end up controlling -Wmaybe-uninitialized.)

definitions in files that either contain assertions or where grep
suggested they might contain assertions - and thus where it isn't
possible to use a simple object code comparison as a sanity check on
the correctness of the patch, because line numbers are changed.
A few such automatically-generated changes needed to be supplemented
by manual changes for the result to compile. openat64 had a prototype
declaration with "..." but an old-style definition in
sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/dl-openat64.c, and "..." needed adding to the
generated prototype in the definition (I've filed
<https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=68024> for diagnosing
such cases in GCC; the old state was undefined behavior not requiring
a diagnostic, but one seems a good idea). In addition, as Florian has
noted regparm attribute mismatches between declaration and definition
are only diagnosed for prototype definitions, and five functions
needed internal_function added to their definitions (in the case of
__pthread_mutex_cond_lock, via the macro definition of
__pthread_mutex_lock) to compile on i386.
After this patch is in, remaining old-style definitions are probably
most readily fixed manually before we can turn on
-Wold-style-definition for all builds.
Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite).

This automatically-generated patch converts 29 function definitions in
glibc (including one in an example in the manual) from old-style K&R

Two glibc makefiles use -Wno-strict-prototypes. I don't know if this
was needed before my recent conversion of many function definitions to
prototype style, but it's not needed now; this patch removes it.
Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite, and that installed stripped
shared libraries are unchanged by the patch).
* posix/Makefile (CFLAGS-regex.c): Remove variable.
* resolv/Makefile (+cflags): Do not use -Wno-strict-prototypes.
With gcc-4.9, a new -fstack-protector-strong flag is available that is
between -fstack-protector (pretty weak) and -fstack-protector-all (pretty
strong) that provides good trade-offs between overhead but still providing
good coverage. Update the places in glibc that use ssp to use this flag
when it's available.
This also kills off the indirection of hardcoding the flag name in the
Makefiles and adding it based on a have-ssp boolean. Instead, the build
always expands the $(stack-protector) variable to the best ssp setting.
This makes the build logic a bit simpler and allows people to easily set
to a diff flag like:
make stack-protector=-fstack-protector-all
These tests were skipped by the use-test-skeleton conversion done in
commit 29955b5d because they did not have an `int main (void)'
declaration. Instead their `main' functions were declared with arguments
(i.e. argc, argv) even though they didn't use them.
Remove these arguments and include the test skeleton in these tests.
When "reorder" resolver option is enabled, threads of a multi-threaded process
could hang in gethostbyaddr_r, gethostbyname_r, or gethostbyname2_r.
Due to a trivial bug in _res_hconf_reorder_addrs, simultaneous
invocations of this function in a multi-threaded process could result to
_res_hconf_reorder_addrs returning without releasing the lock it holds,
causing other threads to block indefinitely while waiting for the lock
that is not going to be released.

netdb.h declares interfaces such as getaddrinfo if __USE_POSIX,
i.e. POSIX.1:1990 or later. However, these interfaces were new in the
2001 edition of POSIX, although the header was in XPG4 and UNIX98, so
they should not be declared for XPG4 or UNIX98. (This produces
spurious linknamespace test failures, although there are other
failures for this header as well for the same standards so this patch
doesn't remove any XFAILs.) This patch corrects the condition, and
the conform/ test expectations which were similarly wrong.
Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite, and that installed stripped
shared libraries are unchanged by the patch).

The 2008 edition of POSIX removed h_errno, but some functions still
bring in references to the h_errno external symbol. As this symbol is
not a part of the public ABI (only __h_errno_location is), this patch
fixes this by renaming the GLIBC_PRIVATE TLS symbol to __h_errno.
Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite, and comparison of installed
shared libraries). Disassembly of all shared libraries using h_errno
changes because of the renaming (and changes to associated TLS / GOT
offsets in some cases); disassembly of libpthread on x86_64 changes
more substantially because the enlargement of .dynsym affects
subsequent addresses.
