Prepare vfscanf to use __strtof128_internal
On powerpc64le, long double can currently take two formats: the same as double (-mlong-double-64) or IBM Extended Precision (default with -mlong-double-128 or explicitly with -mabi=ibmlongdouble). The internal implementation of scanf-like functions is aware of these possibilites and, based on the format in use, properly calls __strtold_internal or __strtod_internal, saving the return to a variable of type double or long double. When library support for TS 18661-3 was added to glibc, a new function, __strtof128_internal, was added to enable reading of floating-point values with IEEE binary128 format into the _Float128 type. Now that powerpc64le is getting support for its third long double format, and taking into account that this format is the same as the format of _Float128, this patch extends __vfscanf_internal and __vfwscanf_internal to call __strtof128_internal or __wcstof128_internal when appropriate. The result gets saved into a variable of _Float128 type. Tested for powerpc64le. |

Use PRINTF_FORTIFY instead of _IO_FLAGS2_FORTIFY (bug 11319)
The _chk variants of all of the printf functions become much simpler.
This is the last thing that we needed _IO_acquire_lock_clear_flags2
for, so it can go as well. I took the opportunity to make the headers
included and the names of all local variables consistent across all the
affected files.
Since we ultimately want to get rid of __no_long_double as well, it
must be possible to get all of the nontrivial effects of the _chk
functions by calling the _internal functions with appropriate flags.
For most of the __(v)xprintf_chk functions, this is covered by
PRINTF_FORTIFY plus some up-front argument checks that can be
duplicated. However, __(v)sprintf_chk installs a custom jump table so
that it can crash instead of overflowing the output buffer. This
functionality is moved to __vsprintf_internal, which now has a
'maxlen' argument like __vsnprintf_internal; to get the unsafe
behavior of ordinary (v)sprintf, pass -1 for that argument.
obstack_printf_chk and obstack_vprintf_chk are no longer in the same
file.
As a side-effect of the unification of both fortified and non-fortified
vdprintf initialization, this patch fixes bug 11319 for __dprintf_chk
and __vdprintf_chk, which was previously fixed only for dprintf and
vdprintf by the commit

Add __v*printf_internal with flags arguments
There are a lot more printf variants than there are scanf variants, and the code for setting up and tearing down their custom FILE variants around the call to __vf(w)printf is more complicated and variable. Therefore, I have added _internal versions of all the v*printf variants, rather than introducing helper routines so that they can all directly call __vf(w)printf_internal, as was done with scanf. As with the scanf changes, in this patch the _internal functions still look at the environmental mode bits and all callers pass 0 for the flags parameter. Several of the affected public functions had _IO_ name aliases that were not exported (but, in one case, appeared in libio.h anyway); I was originally planning to leave them as aliases to avoid having to touch internal callers, but it turns out ldbl_*_alias only work for exported symbols, so they've all been removed instead. It also turns out there were hardly any internal callers. _IO_vsprintf and _IO_vfprintf *are* exported, so those two stick around. Summary for the changes to each of the affected symbols: _IO_vfprintf, _IO_vsprintf: All internal calls removed, thus the internal declarations, as well as uses of libc_hidden_proto and libc_hidden_def, were also removed. The external symbol is now exposed via uses of ldbl_strong_alias to __vfprintf_internal and __vsprintf_internal, respectively. _IO_vasprintf, _IO_vdprintf, _IO_vsnprintf, _IO_vfwprintf, _IO_vswprintf, _IO_obstack_vprintf, _IO_obstack_printf: All internal calls removed, thus declaration in internal headers were also removed. They were never exported, so there are no aliases tying them to the internal functions. I.e.: entirely gone. __vsnprintf: Internal calls were always preceded by macros such as #define __vsnprintf _IO_vsnprintf, and #define __vsnprintf vsnprintf The macros were removed and their uses replaced with calls to the new internal function __vsnprintf_internal. Since there were no internal calls, the internal declaration was also removed. The external symbol is preserved with ldbl_weak_alias to ___vsnprintf. __vfwprintf: All internal calls converted into calls to __vfwprintf_internal, thus the internal declaration was removed. The function is now a wrapper that calls __vfwprintf_internal. The external symbol is preserved. __vswprintf: Similarly, but no external symbol. __vasprintf, __vdprintf, __vfprintf, __vsprintf: New internal wrappers. Not exported. vasprintf, vdprintf, vfprintf, vsprintf, vsnprintf, vfwprintf, vswprintf, obstack_vprintf, obstack_printf: These functions used to be aliases to the respective _IO_* function, they are now aliases to their respective __* functions. Tested for powerpc and powerpc64le. |

Use SCANF_ISOC99_A instead of _IO_FLAGS2_SCANF_STD.
Change the callers of __vfscanf_internal and __vfwscanf_internal that want C99-compliant behavior to communicate this via the new flags argument, rather than setting bits on the FILE object. This also means these functions do not need to do their own locking. Tested for powerpc and powerpc64le. |

Add __vfscanf_internal and __vfwscanf_internal with flags arguments.
There are two flags currently defined: SCANF_LDBL_IS_DBL is the mode used by __nldbl_ scanf variants, and SCANF_ISOC99_A is the mode used by __isoc99_ scanf variants. In this patch, the new functions honor these flag bits if they're set, but they still also look at the corresponding bits of environmental state, and callers all pass zero. The new functions do *not* have the "errp" argument possessed by _IO_vfscanf and _IO_vfwscanf. All internal callers passed NULL for that argument. External callers could theoretically exist, so I preserved wrappers, but they are flagged as compat symbols and they don't preserve the three-way distinction among types of errors that was formerly exposed. These functions probably should have been in the list of deprecated _IO_ symbols in 2.27 NEWS -- they're not just aliases for vfscanf and vfwscanf. (It was necessary to introduce ldbl_compat_symbol for _IO_vfscanf. Please check that part of the patch very carefully, I am still not confident I understand all of the details of ldbl-opt.) This patch also introduces helper inlines in libio/strfile.h that encapsulate the process of initializing an _IO_strfile object for reading. This allows us to call __vfscanf_internal directly from sscanf, and __vfwscanf_internal directly from swscanf, without duplicating the initialization code. (Previously, they called their v-counterparts, but that won't work if we want to control *both* C99 mode and ldbl-is-dbl mode using the flags argument to__vfscanf_internal.) It's still a little awkward, especially for wide strfiles, but it's much better than what we had. Tested for powerpc and powerpc64le. |

posix: Use posix_spawn on popen
This patch uses posix_spawn on popen instead of fork and execl. On Linux this has the advantage of much lower memory consumption (usually 32 Kb minimum for the mmap stack area). Two issues are also fixed with this change: * BZ#17490: although POSIX pthread_atfork description only list 'fork' as the function that should execute the atfork handlers, popen description states that: '[...] shall be *as if* a child process were created within the popen() call using the fork() function [...]' Other libc/system seems to follow the idea atfork handlers should not be executed for popen: libc/system | run atfork handles | notes ------------|----------------------|--------------------------------------- Freebsd | no | uses vfork Solaris 11 | no | MacOSX 11 | no | implemented through posix_spawn syscall ------------|----------------------|---------------------------------------- Similar to posix_spawn and system, popen idea is to spawn a different binary so all the POSIX rationale to run the atfork handlers to avoid internal process inconsistency is not really required and in some cases might be unsafe. * BZ#22834: the described scenario, where the forked process might access invalid memory due an inconsistent state in multithreaded environment, should not happen because posix_spawn does not access the affected data structure (proc_file_chain). Signal zero does not terminate a process, so it is safe to use negative values for signal numbers. Adjust libio/tst-vtables-common.c to use this new functionality, instead of determining the termination status for a signal indirectly. |

Increase timeout of libio/tst-readline
Increase timeout from the default 20s to 100s. This test makes close to 20 million syscalls with distribution: 12327675 read 4143204 lseek 929475 close 929471 openat 92817 fstat 1431 write ... libio: Flush stream at freopen (BZ#21037)
As POSIX states [1] a freopen call should first flush the stream as if by a call fflush. C99 (n1256) and C11 (n1570) only states the function should first close any file associated with the specific stream. Although current implementation only follow C specification, current BSD and other libc implementation (musl) are in sync with POSIX and fflush the stream. This patch change freopen{64} to fflush the stream before actually reopening it (or returning if the stream does not support reopen). It also changes the Linux implementation to avoid a dynamic allocation on 'fd_to_filename'. Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu. libio: Implement internal function __libc_readline_unlocked
This is a variant of fgets which fails with ERANGE if the buffer is too small, and the buffer length is given as an argument of type size_t. This function will be useful for implementing NSS file reading operations. Compared to a direct implementation using the public API, it avoids an lseek system call in case the line terminator can be found in the internal read buffer. |

Add renameat2 function [BZ #17662]
The implementation falls back to renameat if renameat2 is not available in the kernel (or in the kernel headers) and the flags argument is zero. Without kernel support, a non-zero argument returns EINVAL, not ENOSYS. This mirrors what the kernel does for invalid renameat2 flags. |

libio: Avoid _allocate_buffer, _free_buffer function pointers [BZ #23236]
These unmangled function pointers reside on the heap and could be targeted by exploit writers, effectively bypassing libio vtable validation. Instead, we ignore these pointers and always call malloc or free. In theory, this is a backwards-incompatible change, but using the global heap instead of the user-supplied callback functions should have little application impact. (The old libstdc++ implementation exposed this functionality via a public, undocumented constructor in its strstreambuf class.) |

[BZ 1190] Make EOF sticky in stdio.
C99 specifies that the EOF condition on a file is "sticky": once EOF has been encountered, all subsequent reads should continue to return EOF until the file is closed or something clears the "end-of-file indicator" (e.g. fseek, clearerr). This is arguably a change from C89, where the wording was ambiguous; the BSDs always had sticky EOF, but the System V lineage would attempt to read from the underlying fd again. GNU libc has followed System V for as long as we've been using libio, but nowadays C99 conformance and BSD compatibility are more important than System V compatibility. You might wonder if changing the _underflow impls is sufficient to apply the C99 semantics to all of the many stdio functions that perform input. It should be enough to cover all paths to _IO_SYSREAD, and the only other functions that call _IO_SYSREAD are the _seekoff impls, which is OK because seeking clears EOF, and the _xsgetn impls, which, as far as I can tell, are unused within glibc. The test programs in this patch use a pseudoterminal to set up the necessary conditions. To facilitate this I added a new test-support function that sets up a pair of pty file descriptors for you; it's almost the same as BSD openpty, the only differences are that it allocates the optionally-returned tty pathname with malloc, and that it crashes if anything goes wrong. This patch eliminates a number of #if 0 and #ifdef TODO blocks, macros that are never used, macros that provide portability to substrates that lack basic things like EINVAL and off_t, and other such debris. I preserved IO_DEBUG and CHECK_FILE, even though as far as I can tell IO_DEBUG is never defined and therefore CHECK_FILE never does anything, because it seems like we might actually want to turn it _on_. Fix -Os putc_unlocked, fputc_unlocked linknamespace, localplt issues (bug 15105, bug 19463).
Continuing the fixes for linknamespace and localplt test failures with -Os that arise from functions not being inlined in that case, this patch fixes such failures for putc_unlocked and fputc_unlocked. libc_hidden_* are used for both functions, while namespace issues are addressed by making putc_unlocked a weak alias of hidden __putc_unlocked, which is called in the one place where namespace issues arise (and defined as an inline function in include/stdio.h). Tested for x86_64 (both without -Os to make sure that case continues to work, and with -Os to make sure all the relevant linknamespace and localplt test failures are resolved). Use libc_hidden_* for fputs (bug 15105).
Among other localplt test failures when building with -Os, there are libc.so PLT references for fputs. fputs calls normally get redirected to _IO_fputs by a macro in include/stdio.h (and _IO_fputs in turn uses libc_hidden_proto), but GCC can convert an fprintf call with a constant string argument into an fputs call, which of course is then unaffected by the macro redirection. (I don't know why this issue only appears with -Os.) This patch duly adds a use of libc_hidden_proto for fputs. I see no obvious reason why the fputs macro redirection is needed at all, but this patch does not change it. Tested for x86_64 (both that it removes this particular localplt failure for -Os - but other such failures remain so the bug can't yet be closed - and that the testsuite continues to pass without -Os). Post-cleanup 2: minimize _G_config.h.
Nearly everything in _G_config.h is either junk or more appropriately defined elsewhere: * _G_fpos_t, _G_fpos64_t, and _G_BUFSIZ are already completely unused. * All remaining uses of _G_va_list have been changed to __gnuc_va_list. * The definition of _G_HAVE_ST_BLKSIZE/_IO_HAVE_ST_BLKSIZE has been inlined into its sole use. * The complete definition of _G_iconv_t has been moved to libio.h and renamed _IO_iconv_t (all actual users used that name). * _G_IO_IO_FILE_VERSION is vestigial; some code cares whether _IO_stdin_used exists, but nothing looks at its value. I've preserved the value as a hardwired constant in csu/init.c. This means csu/init.c no longer needs to include anything. * Many of the headers included by _G_config.h were already being included directly by either either libio.h or stdio.h; the remaining ones were moved to libio.h. * _G_HAVE_MREMAP is still relevant, because mremap genuinely is a Linux extension; it's not in POSIX and as far as I can tell it's not available on the Hurd either. I also preserved _G_HAVE_MMAP, since it's conceivable someone would want to port glibc to a MMU-less, mmap-less environment in the future. Both are now always defined to 1/0 as is the current convention, instead of the older 1/undef convention. These are the only symbols still defined in _G_config.h. * The actual inclusion of _G_config.h moves from libio.h to libioP.h, as this is where a potential override of _G_HAVE_MMAP happens. * The #ifdef logic in libioP.h controlling _IO_JUMPS_OFFSET has been simplified. After this patch, the only surviving _G_ symbols are the struct tag names _G_fpos_t and _G_fpos64_t, which are preserved for the sake of C++ mangled names in applications, and _G_HAVE_MMAP and _G_HAVE_MREMAP, which do not seem worth renaming. Post-cleanup 1: move libio.h back out of bits/.
We can't go very far with libio cleanups as long as we still have _IO_MTSAFE_IO, and I am not tackling that in this patch series, but we can at least make the maze of stdio-related headers a little less complicated. In this patch, libio.h moves back out of bits/ into the top level of the libio subdirectory, and is merged with libio/bits/libio-ldbl.h (which also used to be installed) and include/libio.h. Since almost no files include libio.h directly, this is quite straightforward. libio.h is now always used with _LIBC defined, so all of the _LIBC || _GLIBCPP_USE_WCHAR_T conditionals are unnecessary. Similarly, the ifdef nest surrounding the definition of _IO_fwide_maybe_incompatible can collapse down to a single SHLIB_COMPAT check. I also took the opportunity to add some checks for configuration botches to libio.h. Installed stripped libraries are unchanged by this patch. * libio/bits/libio.h: Move back to libio/libio.h and adjust multiple-include guard to match. Merge contents of libio/bits/libio-ldbl.h and include/libio.h into this file. Don't install libio.h or _G_config.h.
We shipped 2.27 with libio.h and _G_config.h still installed but issuing warnings when used. Let's stop installing them early in 2.28 so that we have plenty of time to think of another plan if there are problems. The public stdio.h had a genuine dependency on libio.h for the complete definitions of FILE and cookie_io_functions_t, and a genuine dependency on _G_config.h for the complete definitions of fpos_t and fpos64_t; these are moved to single-type headers. bits/types/struct_FILE.h also provides a handful of accessor and bitflags macros so that code is not duplicated between bits/stdio.h and libio.h. All the other _IO_ and _G_ names used by the public stdio.h can be replaced with either public names or __-names. In order to minimize the risk of breaking our own compatibility code, bits/types/struct_FILE.h preserves the _IO_USE_OLD_IO_FILE mechanism exactly as it was in libio.h, but you have to define _LIBC to use it, or it'll error out. Similarly, _IO_lock_t_defined is preserved exactly, but will error out if used without defining _LIBC. Internally, include/stdio.h continues to include libio.h, and libio.h scrupulously provides every _IO_* and _G_* name that it always did, perhaps now defined in terms of the public names. This is how this patch avoids touching dozens of files throughout glibc and becoming entangled with the _IO_MTSAFE_IO mess. The remaining patches in this series eliminate most of the _G_ names. Remove getc and putc macros from the public stdio.h.
The getc and putc macros in the public stdio.h expand to call _IO_getc and _IO_putc respectively. As _IO_getc, fgetc, and getc are all aliases for the same function, and _IO_putc, fputc, and putc are also all aliases for the same function, the macros are pointless. The C standard does not require getc and putc to be macros, so let's just not have macros. All four symbols are exported from libc.so at the same, ancient symbol version, so there should be no risks for binary compatibility. Similarly, the getchar and putchar inlines in bits/stdio.h forward to getc and putc instead of their _IO_ aliases. As a change from longstanding historical practice, this does seem like it might break _something_, so there is a note in NEWS, which is also a convenient place to advise people that if they thought getc and putc had reduced per-character overhead they should consider using getc_unlocked and putc_unlocked instead. Deprecate external use of libio.h and _G_config.h.
libio.h was originally the header for a set of supported GNU extensions, but they have not been maintained as such in many years, they are now standing in the way of improvements to stdio, and we don't think there are any remaining external users. _G_config.h was never intended for public use, but predates the bits convention. Move both of these headers into the bits directory and provide stubs at top level which issue deprecation warnings. libio: Free backup area when it not required (BZ#22415)
Some libio operations fail to correctly free the backup area (created by _IO_{w}default_pbackfail on unget{w}c) resulting in either invalid buffer free operations or memory leaks. For instance, on the example provided by BZ#22415 a following fputc after a fseek to rewind the stream issues an invalid free on the buffer. It is because although _IO_file_overflow correctly (from fputc) correctly calls _IO_free_backup_area, the _IO_new_file_seekoff (called by fseek) updates the FILE internal pointers without first free the backup area (resulting in invalid values in the internal pointers). The wide version also shows an issue, but instead of accessing invalid pointers it leaks the backup memory on fseek/fputwc operation. This patch consolidates all the non cancellable waitpid calls to use the __waitpid_nocancel identifier. For non cancellable targets it will be just a macro to call the default respective symbol while on Linux will be a internal one. Single threaded stdio optimization
Locking overhead can be significant in some stdio operations that are common in single threaded applications. This patch adds the _IO_FLAGS2_NEED_LOCK flag to indicate if an _IO_FILE object needs to be locked and some of the stdio functions just jump to their _unlocked variant when not. The flag is set on all _IO_FILE objects when the first thread is created. A new GLIBC_PRIVATE libc symbol, _IO_enable_locks, was added to do this from libpthread. The optimization can be applied to more stdio functions, currently it is only applied to single flag check or single non-wide-char standard operations. The flag should probably be never set for files with _IO_USER_LOCK, but that's just a further optimization, not a correctness requirement. The optimization is valid in a single thread because stdio operations are non-as-safe (so lock state is not observable from a signal handler) and stdio locks are recursive (so lock state is not observable via deadlock). The optimization is not valid if a thread may be created while an stdio lock is taken and thus it should be disabled if any user code may run during an stdio operation (interposed malloc, printf hooks, etc). libio: Avoid dup already opened file descriptor [BZ#21393]
As described in BZ#21398 (close as dup of 21393) report current freopen implementation fails when one tries to freopen STDIN_FILENO, STDOUT_FILENO, or STDERR_FILENO. Although on bug report the discussion leads to argue if a close followed by a freopen on the standard file is a valid operation, the underlying issue is not really the check for dup3 returned value, but rather calling it if the returned file descriptor is equal as the input one. So for a quality of implementation this patch avoid calling dup3 for the aforementioned case. It also adds a dup3 error case check for the two possible failures, with one being Linux only: EINTR and EBUSY. The EBUSY issue is better explained on this stackoverflow thread [1], but in a short it is due the internal Linux implementation which allows a race condition window for dup2 due the logic dissociation of file descriptor allocation and actual VFS 'install' operation. For both outliers failures all allocated memory is freed and a NULL FILE* is returned. With this patch the example on BZ#21398 is now actually possible (I used as the testcase for the bug report). Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu. Remove _IO_MTSAFE_IO from public headers.
_IO_MTSAFE_IO controls whether stdio is *built* with support for multithreading. In the distant past it might also have worked as a feature selection macro, allowing library *users* to select thread-safe or lock-free stdio at application build time, I haven't done the archaeology. Nowadays, defining _IO_MTSAFE_IO while using the installed headers, or in _ISOMAC mode, will cause libio.h to throw syntax errors. This patch removes _IO_MTSAFE_IO from the public headers (specifically, from libio/libio.h). The most important thing it controlled in there was whether libio.h defines _IO_lock_t itself or expects stdio-lock.h to have done it, and we do still need a inter-header communication macro for that, because stdio-lock.h can only define _IO_lock_t as a typedef. I've invented _IO_lock_t_defined, which is defined by both versions of stdio-lock.h. _IO_MTSAFE_IO also controlled the definitions of a handful of macros that _might_ count as part of the public libio.h interface. They are now unconditionally given their non-_IO_MTSAFE_IO definition in libio/libio.h, and include/libio.h redefines them with the _IO_MTSAFE_IO definition. This should minimize the odds of breaking old software that actually uses those macros. I suspect that this entire mechanism is vestigial, and that glibc won't build anymore if you *don't* define _IO_MTSAFE_IO, but that's another patchset. The bulk of libio.h is internal-use-only stuff that no longer makes sense to expose (libstdc++ gave up on making a FILE the same object as a C++ filebuf *decades* ago) but that, too, is another patchset. * libio/libio.h: Condition dummy definition of _IO_lock_t on _IO_lock_t_defined, not _IO_MTSAFE_IO. getopt: eliminate __need_getopt by splitting up getopt.h.
__need_getopt is misnamed; what it really means is "we want only the getopt features specified in POSIX, not the GNU extensions". Because this code is shared with gnulib, it winds up being cleanest to split getopt.h into *four* headers. getopt_core.h and getopt_ext.h will be shared with gnulib, getopt_posix.h will be just for glibc, and each project will have its own copy of getopt.h. * posix/bits/getopt_core.h, posix/bits/getopt_ext.h: New files, intended to be shared with gnulib. * posix/bits/getopt_posix.h: New file, not intended to be shared with gnulib. * posix/getopt.h: Now just includes features.h, bits/getopt_core.h, and bits/getopt_ext.h. Remove C++ namespace handling from glibc headers.
glibc headers include some code (not particularly consistent or systematic) to put various declarations in C++ namespaces std and __c99, if _GLIBCPP_USE_NAMESPACES is defined. As noted in <https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/libstdc++/2017-03/msg00025.html>, this macro was removed from libstdc++ in 2000. I don't expect compilation with such old versions of libstdc++ to work with current glibc headers anyway (whereas old *binaries* are expected to stay working with current glibc); this patch (which should be a no-op with any libstdc++ version postdating that removal) removes all this code from the glibc headers. The begin-end-check.pl test, whose comments say it is about checking these namespace macro calls, is also removed. The code in that test would have covered __BEGIN_DECLS / __END_DECLS as well, but if those weren't properly matched it would show up with the check-installed-headers-cxx tests, so I don't think there is an actual use for keeping begin-end-check.pl with the namespace code removed. Clean up conditionals for declaration of gets.
gets has the dubious honor of being the only C89 library feature that has been completely removed from the current C and C++ standards. glibc follows suit by not declaring it in _GNU_SOURCE mode either, but it remains present in older compatibility modes. Internally, two test cases need to see stdio.h make the declaration, but all our internal code is of course compiled under _GNU_SOURCE. This is currently kludged by duplicating the gets declaration, fortify wrapper and all, in include/stdio.h. Also, the conditional in the public headers for deciding when to declare gets is complicated and repeated in two places. This patch adds a new macro to features.h that encapsulates the complicated rule for when to declare gets. stdio.h and bits/stdio2.h then simply test __GLIBC_USE (DEPRECATED_GETS), and instead of having a duplicate gets declaration in include/stdio.h, debug/tst-chk1.c and stdio-common/tst-gets.c can force gets to be declared. * include/features.h (__GLIBC_USE_DEPRECATED_GETS): New macro. * libio/stdio.h, libio/bits/stdio2.h: Condition gets on __GLIBC_USE (DEPRECATED_GETS). support: Introduce new subdirectory for test infrastructure
The new test driver in <support/test-driver.c> has feature parity with the old one. The main difference is that its hooking mechanism is based on functions and function pointers instead of macros. This commit also implements a new environment variable, TEST_COREDUMPS, which disables the code which disables coredumps (that is, it enables them if the invocation environment has not disabled them). <test-skeleton.c> defines wrapper functions so that it is possible to use existing macros with the new-style hook functionality. This commit changes only a few test cases to the new test driver, to make sure that it works as expected. |

libio: Multiple fixes for open_{w}memstram (BZ#18241 and BZ#20181)
This patches fixes multiples issues on open_{w}memstream reported on both BZ#18241 and BZ#20181: - failed fseek does not set errno. - negative offset in fseek fails even when resulting position is a valid one. - a flush after write if the current write position is not at the end of the stream currupt data. The main fix is on seek operation for memstream (_IO_{w}str_seekoff), where both _IO_read_ptr and _IO_read_end pointer are updated if a write operation has occured (similar to default file operations). Also, to calculate the offset on both read and write pointers, a temporary value is instead of updating the argument supplied value. Negative offset are valid if resulting internal pointer is within the range of _IO_{read,write}_base and _IO_{read,write}_end. Also POSIX states that a null or wide null shall be appended to the current buffer iff a write moves the position to a value larger than the current lenght. Current implementation appends a null or wide null regardless of this condition. This patch fixes it by removing the 'else' condition on _IO_{w}mem_sync. Checked on x86_64. Support __STDC_WANT_LIB_EXT2__ feature test macro.
This patch implements support for the __STDC_WANT_LIB_EXT2__ feature test macro from ISO/IEC TR 24731-2:2010, thereby implementing one possible approach for supporting ISO C feature test macros. Recall that, as described in <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2016-05/msg00486.html>, these macros work based on the definition when affected headers are included, so cannot be handled once when the first system header is included because that might not be one of the headers the particular macro in question affects. <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2016-05/msg00680.html> expresses views on possible approaches for implementation and <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2016-06/msg00039.html> follows up on that. This patch arranges things so that the relevant condition is __GLIBC_USE (LIB_EXT2), following one of the suggestions given. Headers using these macros include <bits/libc-header-start.h>, which in turn includes <features.h>. Headers must define __GLIBC_INTERNAL_STARTING_HEADER_IMPLEMENTATION before including <bits/libc-header-start.h>, to discourage inclusion outside glibc as requested. __USE_GNU conditions on affected functions are changed to __GLIBC_USE (LIB_EXT2), while it's added as an additional alternative on the conditions for functions already enabled for some POSIX versions. It would be possible to convert existing __USE_* conditionals to __GLIBC_USE (with the relevant __GLIBC_USE_* being defined in <features.h> where __USE_* are presently defined), and so make them typo-proof (given -Wundef -Werror in glibc builds) because __GLIBC_USE is used with #if not #ifdef / #if defined. No attempt is made to enforce the rule about diagnosing different definitions of __STDC_WANT_LIB_EXT2__ when affected headers are included; such a diagnostic is incompatible with multiple-include guards on the affected headers, unless compiler extensions are added to support it. As previously noted, glibc does not implement all features from TR 24731-2:2010: the functions aswprintf vaswprintf getwdelim getwline are not in glibc, although they would be appropriate to add if someone wished to do so. But I think it makes sense to support the feature test macro if *any* of the controlled features are present in glibc. libio: Implement vtable verification [BZ #20191]
This commit puts all libio vtables in a dedicated, read-only ELF section, so that they are consecutive in memory. Before any indirect jump, the vtable pointer is checked against the section boundaries, and the process is terminated if the vtable pointer does not fall into the special ELF section. To enable backwards compatibility, a special flag variable (_IO_accept_foreign_vtables), protected by the pointer guard, avoids process termination if libio stream object constructor functions have been called earlier. Such constructor functions are called by the GCC 2.95 libstdc++ library, and this mechanism ensures compatibility with old binaries. Existing callers inside glibc of these functions are adjusted to call the original functions, not the wrappers which enable vtable compatiblity. The compatibility mechanism is used to enable passing FILE * objects across a static dlopen boundary, too. |

Fix stdio.h namespace for pre-threads POSIX (bug 20014).
stdio.h declares flockfile, ftrylockfile, funlockfile, getc_unlocked, getchar_unlocked, putc_unlocked and putchar_unlocked if __USE_POSIX, with comments "These are defined in POSIX.1:1996.". But __USE_POSIX is actually POSIX.1:1990, and these functions should not be declared for 1990 / 1992 / 1993 POSIX, XPG3 or XPG4. This patch fixes stdio.h to use __USE_POSIX199506 instead for those conditionals, as that is the correct conditional for the version of POSIX that introduced threads, and with threads those functions. Define off_t in stdio.h for XOPEN2K.
The header conformance test for stdio.h for XOPEN2K fails because the header does not define the off_t type, used in the expected declarations for fseeko and ftello. The absence of this type is not actually strictly a bug (hence no bug report being filed in Bugzilla), since POSIX didn't require the type to be declared in this header until the 2008 edition. However, the glibc convention in such cases - where the type falls under the general *_t POSIX reservation, and so it's OK to define it for all POSIX versions - is to make the headers self-contained in this regard even for the older POSIX versions not requiring the type to be defined despite including other declarations depending on the type. Thus, this patch adjusts the condition in the header and removes the XFAIL (rather than adapting the expectation to work when the functions are declared using __off_t without off_t being defined). Fix stdio.h cuserid namespace (bug 19989).
stdio.h declares cuserid if __USE_XOPEN. But this was removed in the 2001 edition of POSIX. The #endif comment "Use X/Open, but not issue 6." reflects the correct logic, but does not correspond to the #ifdef. The use of a correct libc-hacker. The online archives for libc-hacker in August 2000 are broken, but the messages can be found in the qmail archives in /sourceware1/qmail/lists-sourceware/libc-hacker/archive/26 if you have shell access to sourceware. The issue showed up in August 2000 because of a warning about a non-prototype definition in sysdeps/posix/cuserid.c when there was no previous prototype declaration. Since we've now eliminated non-prototype function definitions, that issue does not apply. The other points from that discussion were about whether it should be included in _GNU_SOURCE; whether _GNU_SOURCE should include "everything"; whether deprecated interfaces such as this should be excluded from it; and whether, even given exclusion of deprecated interfaces, it should apply for deprecations in a version of POSIX that at that time had not been released. This patch follows the more conservative approach to a fix of keeping the interface in _GNU_SOURCE. That matches how L_cuserid is handled. I think there is a strong case for eliminating this interface from _GNU_SOURCE (but this may not automatically be the case for every interface removed in newer POSIX versions), but then L_cuserid should also be removed from _GNU_SOURCE (in stdio-common/stdio_lim.h.in) at the same time. Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite, and that installed shared libraries are unchanged by the patch). Convert miscellaneous function definitions to prototype style.
This patch converts various miscellaneous functions definitions in glibc, found with grep and not covered by my previous scripted conversions, from old-style K&R to prototype-style. These changes were made manually. This is not necessarily exhaustive as formatting variants may have prevented my grep from finding some such definitions. Regarding the changes to files from GMP, they may originally have been omitted when removing __STDC__ conditionals because of the files coming from another package, but (a) GMP no longer has __STDC__ conditionals there anyway and (b) we don't try to keep these files verbatim in sync with GMP (and there are licensing differences), so making the change to them in glibc seems reasonable. Convert 113 more function definitions to prototype style (files with assertions).
This mostly automatically-generated patch converts 113 function definitions in glibc from old-style K&R to prototype-style. Following my other recent such patches, this one deals with the case of function definitions in files that either contain assertions or where grep suggested they might contain assertions - and thus where it isn't possible to use a simple object code comparison as a sanity check on the correctness of the patch, because line numbers are changed. A few such automatically-generated changes needed to be supplemented by manual changes for the result to compile. openat64 had a prototype declaration with "..." but an old-style definition in sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/dl-openat64.c, and "..." needed adding to the generated prototype in the definition (I've filed <https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=68024> for diagnosing such cases in GCC; the old state was undefined behavior not requiring a diagnostic, but one seems a good idea). In addition, as Florian has noted regparm attribute mismatches between declaration and definition are only diagnosed for prototype definitions, and five functions needed internal_function added to their definitions (in the case of __pthread_mutex_cond_lock, via the macro definition of __pthread_mutex_lock) to compile on i386. After this patch is in, remaining old-style definitions are probably most readily fixed manually before we can turn on -Wold-style-definition for all builds. Remove -fexceptions configure test.
There is a configure test for -fexceptions. This option was added in GCC 2.8, so the test is obsolete - and indeed plenty of code is using -fexceptions directly. This patch removes the configure test and makes all uses of $(exceptions) use -fexceptions directly. Move bits/libc-lock.h and bits/libc-lockP.h out of bits/ (bug 14912).
It was noted in <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2012-09/msg00305.html> that the bits/*.h naming scheme should only be used for installed headers. This patch renames bits/libc-lock.h to plain libc-lock.h and bits/libc-lockP.h to plain libc-lockP.h to follow that convention. Note that I don't know where libc-lockP.h comes from for Hurd (the Hurd libc-lock.h includes libc-lockP.h, but the only libc-lockP.h in the glibc source tree is for NPTL) - some unmerged patch? - but I updated the #include in the Hurd libc-lock.h anyway. Don't install bits/libc-lock.h or bits/stdio-lock.h.
The bits/libc-lock.h and bits/stdio-lock.h headers are installed, but not used by any other installed header. Accordingly, this patch stops these headers from being installed. A followup is intended to move these headers out of the bits/ namespace. Don't include <bits/stdio-lock.h> from installed <libio.h>.
Every so often someone gets confused by the fact that the installed <bits/stdio-lock.h> header includes the non-installed <lowlevellock.h> header. This inclusion is not in fact a bug, because <bits/stdio-lock.h> only gets included by any header that users should include directly if _IO_MTSAFE_IO is defined, and that's an internal define used when building libio, not a feature test macro it's valid for users to define. However, on general principles it's best to have as little as possible in the installed headers that is inapplicable for valid uses of the installed glibc. This patch moves the include of <bits/stdio-lock.h> to the internal header include/libio.h, so that even if someone defines _IO_MTSAFE_IO it won't get included. This is intended as preparation for stopping <bits/stdio-lock.h> and <bits/libc-lock.h> from being installed at all (after this patch they aren't used in any installed header; formally of course they don't need to be installed even before this patch, but stopping them being installed before removing the #include would just exacerbate the confusion described above), and then moving those out of the bits/ namespace in accordance with the principle that that namespace is only for installed headers. The tests scanf15.c and scanf17.c avoid the internal headers; after this patch that means they need to undefine _IO_MTSAFE_IO as well as _LIBC so as to get a working _IO_lock_t definition for libio.h. This brings them closer to using the headers as an installed program would, which clearly accords with the intent of those tests. libio: Fix fmemopen 'w' mode with provided buffer
If 'w' mode is used with a provided buffer the fmemopen will try to find the first null byte to set as maximum internal stream size. It should be done only for append mode ('a').
