de477abcaa Use '%z' instead of '%Z' on printf functions
The Z modifier is a nonstandard synonymn for z (that predates z
itself) and compiler might issue an warning for in invalid

634b5ebac6 Update copyright dates not handled by scripts/update-copyrights.
I've updated copyright dates in glibc for 2022. This is the patch for
the changes not generated by scripts/update-copyrights and subsequent
build / regeneration of generated files. As well as the usual annual
updates, mainly dates in --version output (minus csu/version.c which
previously had to be handled manually but is now successfully updated
by update-copyrights), there is a small change to the copyright notice
in NEWS which should let NEWS get updated automatically next year.

Please remember to include 2022 in the dates for any new files added
in future (which means updating any existing uncommitted patches you
have that add new files to use the new copyright dates in them).

581c785bf3 Update copyright dates with scripts/update-copyrights
I used these shell commands:

../glibc/scripts/update-copyrights $PWD/../gnulib/build-aux/update-copyright
(cd ../glibc && git commit -am"[this commit message]")

and then ignored the output, which consisted lines saying "FOO: warning:
copyright statement not found" for each of 7061 files FOO.

I then removed trailing white space from math/tgmath.h,
support/tst-support-open-dev-null-range.c, and
sysdeps/x86_64/multiarch/strlen-vec.S, to work around the following
obscure pre-commit check failure diagnostics from Savannah. I don't
know why I run into these diagnostics whereas others evidently do not.

30891f35fa Remove "Contributed by" lines
We stopped adding "Contributed by" or similar lines in sources in 2012
in favour of git logs and keeping the Contributors section of the
glibc manual up to date. Removing these lines makes the license
header a bit more consistent across files and also removes the
possibility of error in attribution when license blocks or files are
copied across since the contributed-by lines don't actually reflect
reality in those cases.

Move all "Contributed by" and similar lines (Written by, Test by,
etc.) into a new file CONTRIBUTED-BY to retain record of these
contributions. These contributors are also mentioned in
manual/contrib.texi, so we just maintain this additional record as a
courtesy to the earlier developers.

The following scripts were used to filter a list of files to edit in
place and to clean up the CONTRIBUTED-BY file respectively. These
were not added to the glibc sources because they're not expected to be
of any use in future given that this is a one time task:

2d2d9f2b48 Move malloc hooks into a compat DSO
Remove all malloc hook uses from core malloc functions and move it
into a new library libc_malloc_debug.so. With this, the hooks now no
longer have any effect on the core library.

libc_malloc_debug.so is a malloc interposer that needs to be preloaded
to get hooks functionality back so that the debugging features that
depend on the hooks, i.e. malloc-check, mcheck and mtrace work again.
Without the preloaded DSO these debugging features will be nops.
These features will be ported away from hooks in subsequent patches.

Similarly, legacy applications that need hooks functionality need to
preload libc_malloc_debug.so.

The symbols exported by libc_malloc_debug.so are maintained at exactly
the same version as libc.so.

Finally, static binaries will no longer be able to use malloc
debugging features since they cannot preload the debugging DSO.

0538372096 Fix -Wempty-body warnings in glibc.
One group of warnings seen building glibc with -Wextra is -Wempty-body
warnings about an 'if' body (or in one case an 'else' body) that is
just a semicolon, "warning: suggest braces around empty body in an
'if' statement [-Wempty-body]" - I think the point of the warning
being to make it more visible whether an 'if' body is actually present
or not.

This patch fixes such warnings in glibc. There's one place, with a
semicolon at the end of a comment, where this is clearly making the
presence of an 'else' body more visible. The other cases involve
macro definitions expanding to nothing. While there's no issue there
with visibility at the call sites, I think it's still cleaner to have
a macro that expands to something nonempty appropriate for the context
- so do {} while (0) if it's only intended to be usable as a
statement, or ((void) 0) where the macro definition is an alternative
to a call to a function returning void, so this patch makes those
changes.

Tested for x86_64.

	* catgets/gencat.c (normalize_line): Use braces around empty
	'else' body.
	* include/stap-probe.h [!USE_STAP_PROBE && !__ASSEMBLER__]
	(STAP_PROBE0): Use do {} while (0) for do-nothing definition.

56456a2aad intl/tst-gettext: fix failure with newest msgfmt
Since upstream gettext commit d13f165b83 (msgfmt: Remove
POT-Creation-Date field from the header in the output.), msgfmt does not
copy the POT-Creation-Date field in the header entry from the po file to
the mo file anymore. This breaks the assumption that we can test gettext
by comparing each message in the po files with the corresponding string
return by gettext. This makes the intl/tst-gettext to fail.

While it would have been possible to modify the po2test.awk script to
also strip the line POT-Creation-Date field when creating the msgs.h
file, it would not work with both the old and new msgfmt.

Instead create a tst-gettext-de.po file from de.po by removing the
POT-Creation-Date line. Another alternative would be to use a static
tst-gettext-de.po file, but I guess the reason for using de.po is to
also catch issues caused by newly added strings.

As tst-catgets also uses msg.h, it should also be updated. Instead of
using the new tst-gettext-de.po file, the patch modifies xopen-msg.awk
to avoid creating a second catgets->intl dependency.

Changelog:
	[BZ #21508]
	* catgets/xopen-msg.awk: Ignore POT-Creation-Date line.
	* intl/Makefile ($(objpfx)tst-gettext-de.po): Generate
intl/tst-gettext-de.po from po/de.po by removing the
	POT-Creation-Date line.
($(objpfx)msgs.h): Depend on $(objpfx)tst-gettext-de.po instead of
	../po/de.po.
	* intl/tst-gettext.sh: Use ${objpfx}tst-gettext-de.po instead of
	../po/de.po.

d9fee042e2 Consistently use uintN_t not u_intN_t everywhere.
This patch changes the remaining uses of the old nonstandard u_intN_t
types in glibc to use the C99 uintN_t instead, except for the
definitions of those typedefs and the tests of them in the c++-types
test. This follows the previous such fix for libm, and being
consistent in using uintN_t makes sense as a global cleanup.

Tested for x86_64, and with build-many-glibcs.py.

b4f518ecfa Fix building glibc master with NDEBUG and --with-cpu.
When building on i686, x86_64, and arm, and with NDEBUG, or --with-cpu
there are various variables and functions which are unused based on
these settings.

This patch marks all such variables with __attribute__((unused)) to
avoid the compiler warnings when building with the aformentioned
options.

314f6deec9 Enable --localedir to set message catalog directory (Bug 14259)
In 1999 the project split "localedir" into "localedir" (path to compiled
locale archives) and "msgcatdir" (path to message catalogs). This
predates the 2002 change in the GNU Coding Standard to document the use
of "localedir" for the path to the message catalogs. It appears that
newlib, gcc, and several other projects also used "msgcatdir" at one
point or another in the past, and so it is in line with historical
precedent that glibc would also use "msgcatdir." However, given that the
GNU Coding Standard uses "localedir", we will switch to that for
consistency as a GNU project. Previous uses of --localdir didn't work
anyway (see bug 14259).

I am committing this patch in the understanding that nobody would object
to fixing #14259 as part of aligning our variable usage to the GNU
Coding Standard.

Given that previous "localedir" uses were converted to "complocaledir"
by [1], we can now convert "msgcatdir" to "localedir" and complete the
transition. With an addition to config.make.in we also fix bug 14259 and
allow users to specify the locale dependent data directory with
"--localedir" at configure time. There is still no way to control at
configure time the location of the *compiled* locale directory.

Tested on x86_64 with no regressions.

Tested using "--localedir" to specify alternate locale dependent data
directory and verified with "make install DESTDIR=/tmp/glibc".

29955b5d96 Modify several tests to use test-skeleton.c
This patch modifies several test cases to use test-skeleton.c.
It was generated by a bash script written for this purpose and
thus excludes several other tests which I deemed worth a visual
inspection before making the change.

I intend to follow up with individual patches to the tests
skipped by the script.

The script itself resides at http://git.io/WODAmg and should
reproduce this very patch when run against master.

8540f6d2a7 Don't require test wrappers to preserve environment variables, use more consistent environment.
One wart in the original support for test wrappers for cross testing,
as noted in
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2012-10/msg00722.html>, is the
requirement for test wrappers to pass a poorly-defined set of
environment variables from the build system to the system running the
glibc under test. Although some variables are passed explicitly via
$(test-wrapper-env), including LD_* variables that simply can't be
passed implicitly because of the side effects they'd have on the build
system's dynamic linker, others are passed implicitly, including
variables such as GCONV_PATH and LOCPATH that could potentially affect
the build system's libc (so effectively relying on any such effects
not breaking the wrappers). In addition, the code in
cross-test-ssh.sh for preserving environment variables is fragile (it
depends on how bash formats a list of exported variables, and could
well break for multi-line variable definitions where the contents
contain things looking like other variable definitions).

This patch moves to explicitly passing environment variables via
$(test-wrapper-env). Makefile variables that previously used
$(test-wrapper) are split up into -before-env and -after-env parts
that can be passed separately to the various .sh files used in
testing, so those files can then insert environment settings between
the two parts.

The common default environment settings in make-test-out are made into
a separate makefile variable that can also be passed to scripts,
rather than many scripts duplicating those settings (for testing an
installed glibc, it is desirable to have the GCONV_PATH setting on
just one place, so just that one place needs to support it pointing to
an installed sysroot instead of the build tree). The default settings
are included in the variables such as $(test-program-prefix), so that
if tests do not need any non-default settings they can continue to use
single variables rather than the split-up variables.

Although this patch cleans up LC_ALL=C settings (that being part of
the common defaults), various LANG=C and LANGUAGE=C settings remain.
Those are generally unnecessary and I propose a subsequent cleanup to
remove them. LC_ALL takes precedence over LANG, and while LANGUAGE
takes precedence over LC_ALL, it only does so for settings other than
LC_ALL=C. So LC_ALL=C on its own is sufficient to ensure the C
locale, and anything that gets LC_ALL=C does not need the other
settings.

While preparing this patch I noticed some tests with .sh files that
appeared to do nothing beyond what the generic makefile support for
tests can do (localedata/tst-wctype.sh - the makefiles support -ENV
variables and .input files - and localedata/tst-mbswcs.sh - just runs
five tests that could be run individually from the makefile). So I
propose another subsequent cleanup to move those to using the generic
support instead of special .sh files.

Tested x86_64 (native) and powerpc32 (cross).

6f99f280b0 Count miscellaneous files built on host for testing as tests.
In <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2014-01/msg00198.html> I
raised the question of counting miscellaneous dependencies of tests,
built on the host rather than the build system, as tests, so that when
test failures don't stop "make check" neither do those other builds on
the host, so that a flaky host doesn't stop "make check" from
producing a complete summary of test results. Brooks supported that
idea in <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2014-02/msg00301.html>.

This patch implements that change for all the examples I could find:

f214606a0e Enumerate tests with special rules in tests-special variable.
This patch is a revised and updated version of
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2014-01/msg00196.html>.

In order to generate overall summaries of the results of all tests in
the glibc testsuite, we need to identify and concatenate the files
with the results of individual tests.

Tomas Dohnalek's patch used $(common-objpfx)*/*.test-result for this.
However, the normal glibc approach is explicit enumeration of the
expected set of files with a given property, rather than all files
matching some pattern like that. Furthermore, we would like to be
able to mark tests as UNRESOLVED if the file with their results is for
some reason missing, and in future we would like to be able to mark
tests as UNSUPPORTED if they are disabled for a particular
configuration (rather than simply having them missing from the list of
tests as at present). Such handling of tests that were not run or did
not record results requires an explicit enumeration of tests.

For the tests following the default makefile rules, $(tests) (and
$(xtests)) provides such an enumeration. Others, however, are added
directly as dependencies of the "tests" and "xtests" makefile
targets. This patch changes the makefiles to put them in variables
tests-special and xtests-special, with appropriate dependencies on the
tests listed there then being added centrally.

Those variables are used in Rules and so need to be set before Rules
is included in a subdirectory makefile, which is often earlier in the
makefile than the dependencies were present before. We previously
discussed the question of where to include Rules; see the question at
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2012-11/msg00798.html>, and a
discussion in
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2013-01/msg00337.html> of why
Rules is included early rather than late in subdirectory makefiles.

It was necessary to avoid an indirection through the check-abi target
and get the check-abi-* targets for individual libraries into the
tests-special variable. The intl/ test $(objpfx)tst-gettext.out,
previously built only because of dependencies from other tests, was
also added to tests-special for the same reason.

The entries in tests-special are the full makefile targets, complete
with $(objpfx) and .out. If a future change causes tests to be named
consistently with a .out suffix, this can be changed to include just
the path relative to $(objpfx), without .out.

Tested x86_64, including that the same set of files is generated in
the build directory by a build and testsuite run both before and after
the patch (except for changes to the
elf/tst-null-argv.debug.out.<number> file name), and a build with
run-built-tests=no to verify there aren't any more obvious instances
of the issue Marcus Shawcroft reported with a previous version in
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2014-01/msg00462.html>.

a5f891ac8d Consistently include Makeconfig after defining subdir.
In <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2014-01/msg00196.html> I
noted it was necessary to add includes of Makeconfig early in various
subdirectory makefiles for the tests-special variable settings added
by that patch to be conditional on configuration information. No-one
commented on the general question there of whether Makeconfig should
always be included immediately after the definition of subdir.

This patch implements that early inclusion of Makeconfig in each
directory (which is a lot easier than consistent placement of includes
of Rules). Includes are added if needed, or moved up if already
present. Subdirectory "all:" targets are removed, since Makeconfig
provides one.

There is potential for further cleanups I haven't done. Rules and
Makerules have code such as

ifneq "$(findstring env,$(origin headers))" ""
headers :=
endif

to override to empty any value of various variables that came from the
environment. I think there is a case for Makeconfig setting all the
subdirectory variables (other than subdir) to empty to ensure no
outside value is going to take effect if a subdirectory fails to
define a variable. (A list of such variables, possibly out of date
and incomplete, is in manual/maint.texi.) Rules and Makerules would
give errors if Makeconfig hadn't already been included, instead of
including it themselves. The special code to override values coming
from the environment would then be obsolete and could be removed.

Tested x86_64, including that installed binaries are identical before
and after the patch.

This patch, an updated version of
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2014-01/msg00194.html> now
proposed for inclusion in glibc, extends the generation of PASS and
FAIL status in .test-result files for individual tests to cover tests
with their own custom makefile rules. This is just adding
$(evaluate-test) calls to all such rules, since tests with multiple
commands were previously split into separate tests.

Note that the tests the makefiles expect to fail (posix/annexc and
conformtest) currently get FAIL listed in the .test-result file,
rather than XFAIL; a subsequent patch will introduce a better XFAIL
mechanism.

Tested x86_64.

6ff444c418 unify xmalloc prototypes & friends
These prototypes are duplicated in many places. Add a dedicated
header for holding prototypes for program-specific functions to
avoid that.
