2c6b4b272e nptl: Unconditionally use a 32-byte rseq area
If the kernel headers provide a larger struct rseq, we used that
size as the argument to the rseq system call. As a result,
rseq registration would fail on older kernels which only accept
size 32.

ee1ada1bdb elf: Rework exception handling in the dynamic loader [BZ #25486]
The old exception handling implementation used function interposition
to replace the dynamic loader implementation (no TLS support) with the
libc implementation (TLS support). This results in problems if the
link order between the dynamic loader and libc is reversed (bug 25486).

The new implementation moves the entire implementation of the
exception handling functions back into the dynamic loader, using
THREAD_GETMEM and THREAD_SETMEM for thread-local data support.
These depends on Hurd support for these macros, added in commit
b65a82e4e7 ("hurd: Add THREAD_GET/SETMEM/_NC").

One small obstacle is that the exception handling facilities are used
before the TCB has been set up, so a check is needed if the TCB is
available. If not, a regular global variable is used to store the
exception handling information.

Also rename dl-error.c to dl-catch.c, to avoid confusion with the
dlerror function.

a1bdd81664 Refactor internal-signals.h
The main drive is to optimize the internal usage and required size
when sigset_t is embedded in other data structures. On Linux, the
current supported signal set requires up to 8 bytes (16 on mips),
was lower than the user defined sigset_t (128 bytes).

A new internal type internal_sigset_t is added, along with the
functions to operate on it similar to the ones for sigset_t. The
internal-signals.h is also refactored to remove unused functions

Besides small stack usage on some functions (posix_spawn, abort)
it lower the struct pthread by about 120 bytes (112 on mips).

Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu.

404656009b nptl: Handle spurious EINTR when thread cancellation is disabled (BZ#29029)
Some Linux interfaces never restart after being interrupted by a signal
handler, regardless of the use of SA_RESTART [1]. It means that for
pthread cancellation, if the target thread disables cancellation with
pthread_setcancelstate and calls such interfaces (like poll or select),
it should not see spurious EINTR failures due the internal SIGCANCEL.

However recent changes made pthread_cancel to always sent the internal
signal, regardless of the target thread cancellation status or type.
To fix it, the previous semantic is restored, where the cancel signal
is only sent if the target thread has cancelation enabled in
asynchronous mode.

The cancel state and cancel type is moved back to cancelhandling
and atomic operation are used to synchronize between threads. The
patch essentially revert the following commits:

8c1c0aae20 nptl: Move cancel type out of cancelhandling
2b51742531 nptl: Move cancel state out of cancelhandling
  26cfbb7162 nptl: Remove CANCELING_BITMASK

However I changed the atomic operation to follow the internal C11
semantic and removed the MACRO usage, it simplifies a bit the
resulting code (and removes another usage of the old atomic macros).

Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu, i686-linux-gnu, aarch64-linux-gnu,
and powerpc64-linux-gnu.

30891f35fa Remove "Contributed by" lines
We stopped adding "Contributed by" or similar lines in sources in 2012
in favour of git logs and keeping the Contributors section of the
glibc manual up to date. Removing these lines makes the license
header a bit more consistent across files and also removes the
possibility of error in attribution when license blocks or files are
copied across since the contributed-by lines don't actually reflect
reality in those cases.

Move all "Contributed by" and similar lines (Written by, Test by,
etc.) into a new file CONTRIBUTED-BY to retain record of these
contributions. These contributors are also mentioned in
manual/contrib.texi, so we just maintain this additional record as a
courtesy to the earlier developers.

The following scripts were used to filter a list of files to edit in
place and to clean up the CONTRIBUTED-BY file respectively. These
were not added to the glibc sources because they're not expected to be
of any use in future given that this is a one time task:

2b51742531 nptl: Move cancel state out of cancelhandling

it is possible to move it out the 'cancelhandling'.

The code is also simplified: CANCELLATION_P is replaced with a

With this behavior pthread_setcancelstate does not require to act on
cancellation if cancel type is asynchronous (is already handled either

26cfbb7162 nptl: Remove CANCELING_BITMASK
The CANCELING_BITMASK is used as an optimization to avoid sending
the signal when pthread_cancel is called in a concurrent manner.

This requires then to put both the cancellation state and type on a
shared state (cancelhandling), since 'pthread_cancel' checks whether
cancellation is enabled and asynchrnous to either cancel itself of
 sending the signal.

It also requires handle the CANCELING_BITMASK on
__pthread_disable_asynccancel, however this incurs in the same issues
described on BZ#12683: the cancellation is acted upon even *after*
syscall returns with user visible side-effects.

This patch removes this optimization and simplifies the pthread
cancellation implementation: pthread_cancel now first checks if
cancellation is already pending and if not always, sends a signal
if the target is not itself. The SIGCANCEL handler is also simpified
since there is not need to setup a CAS loop.

It also allows to move both the cancellation state and mode out of
'cancelhadling' (it is done in subsequent patches).

02189e8fb0 nptl: Deallocate the thread stack on setup failure (BZ #19511)
To setup either the thread scheduling parameters or affinity,
pthread_create enforce synchronization on created thread to wait until
its parent either release PD ownership or send a cancellation signal if
a failure occurs.

However, cancelling the thread does not deallocate the newly created
stack since cancellation expects that a pthread_join to deallocate any
allocated thread resouces (threads stack or TLS).

This patch changes on how the thread resource is deallocate in case of
failure to be synchronous, where the creating thread will signal the
created thread to exit early so it could be joined. The creating thread
will be reponsible for the resource cleanup before returning to the
caller.

To signal the creating thread that a failure has occured, an unused
'struct pthread' member, parent_cancelhandling_unsed, now indicates
whether the setup has failed so creating thread can proper exit.

This strategy also simplifies by not using thread cancellation and
thus not running libgcc_so load in the signal handler (which is
avoided in thread cancellation since 'pthread_cancel' is the one
responsible to dlopen libgcc_s). Another advantage is since the
early exit is move to first step at thread creation, the signal
mask is not already set and thus it can not act on change ID setxid
handler.

/* This must be last, otherwise the current thread might not have

                                 cmdp->id[0], cmdp->id[1], cmdp->id[2]);

But the second argument of setgroups syscal is a pointer:

       int setgroups (size_t size, const gid_t *list);

But on x32, pointers passed to syscall must have pointer type so that
they will be zero-extended. The kernel XID arguments are unsigned and
do not require sign extension. Change xid_command to

struct xid_command
{
  int syscall_no;
  unsigned long int id[3];
  volatile int cntr;
  volatile int error;
};

so that all arguments are zero-extended. A testcase is added for x32 and
setgroups returned with EFAULT when running as root without the fix.

9deec7c8ba string: Remove old TLS usage on strsignal
The per-thread state is refactored two use two strategies:

  1. The default one uses a TLS structure, which will be placed in the
static TLS space (using __thread keyword).

  2. Linux allocates via struct pthread and access it through THREAD_*
     macros.

The default strategy has the disadvantage of increasing libc.so static
TLS consumption and thus decreasing the possible surplus used in
some scenarios (which might be mitigated by BZ#25051 fix).

It is used only on Hurd, where accessing the thread storage in the in
single thread case is not straightforward (afaiu, Hurd developers could
correct me here).

The fallback static allocation used for allocation failure is also
removed: defining its size is problematic without synchronizing with
translated messages (to avoid partial translation) and the resulting
usage is not thread-safe.

b3cae39dcb nptl: Start new threads with all signals blocked [BZ #25098]
New threads inherit the signal mask from the current thread. This
means that signal handlers can run on the newly created thread
immediately after the kernel has created the userspace thread, even
before glibc has initialized the TCB. Consequently, new threads can
observe uninitialized ctype data, among other things.

To address this, block all signals before starting the thread, and
pass the original signal mask to the start routine wrapper. On the
new thread, first perform all thread initialization, and then unblock
signals.

The cost of doing this is two rt_sigprocmask system calls on the old
thread, and one rt_sigprocmask system call on the new thread. (If
there was a way to clone a new thread with a signals disabled, this
could be brought down to one system call each.) The thread descriptor
increases in size, too, and sigset_t is fairly large. This increase
could be brought down by reusing space the in the descriptor which is
not needed before running user code, or by switching to an internal
sigset_t definition which only covers the signals supported by the
kernel definition. (Part of the thread descriptor size increase is
already offset by reduced stack usage in the thread start wrapper
routine after this commit.)

38cc11daa4 nptl: Remove pthread_clock_gettime pthread_clock_settime
This patch removes CLOCK_THREAD_CPUTIME_ID and CLOCK_PROCESS_CPUTIME_ID support
from clock_gettime and clock_settime generic implementation. For Linux, kernel
already provides supports through the syscall and Hurd HTL lacks

As described in clock_gettime man-page [1] on 'Historical note for SMP

is error-prone and susceptible to timing and accurary issues that the libc
can not deal without kernel support.

This allows removes unused code which, however, still incur in some runtime

ce7528f637 nptl: Add C11 threads thrd_* functions
This patch adds the thrd_* definitions from C11 threads (ISO/IEC 9899:2011),
more specifically thrd_create, thrd_curent, rhd_detach, thrd_equal,
thrd_exit, thrd_join, thrd_sleep, thrd_yield, and required types.

Mostly of the definitions are composed based on POSIX conterparts, such as
thrd_t (using pthread_t). For thrd_* function internally direct
POSIX pthread call are used with the exceptions:

  1. thrd_start uses pthread_create internal implementation, but changes
how to actually calls the start routine. This is due the difference
in signature between POSIX and C11, where former return a 'void *'
     and latter 'int'.
To avoid calling convention issues due 'void *' to int cast, routines
from C11 threads are started slight different than default pthread one.
Explicit cast to expected return are used internally on pthread_create
and the result is stored back to void also with an explicit cast.

  2. thrd_sleep uses nanosleep internal direct syscall to avoid clobbering
errno and to handle expected standard return codes. It is a
cancellation entrypoint to be consistent with both thrd_join and
     cnd_{timed}wait.

  3. thrd_yield also uses internal direct syscall to avoid errno clobbering.

Checked with a build for all major ABI (aarch64-linux-gnu, alpha-linux-gnu,
arm-linux-gnueabi, i386-linux-gnu, ia64-linux-gnu, m68k-linux-gnu,

2ec0e7eade Revert Intel CET changes to __jmp_buf_tag (Bug 22743)
In commit cba595c350 and commit
f81ddabffd, ABI compatibility with
applications was broken by increasing the size of the on-stack
allocated __pthread_unwind_buf_t beyond the oringal size.
Applications only have the origianl space available for
__pthread_unwind_register, and __pthread_unwind_next to use,
any increase in the size of __pthread_unwind_buf_t causes these
functions to write beyond the original structure into other
on-stack variables leading to segmentation faults in common
applications like vlc. The only workaround is to version those
functions which operate on the old sized objects, but this must
happen in glibc 2.28.

Thank you to Andrew Senkevich, H.J. Lu, and Aurelien Jarno, for
submitting reports and tracking the issue down.

The commit reverts the above mentioned commits and testing on
x86_64 shows that the ABI compatibility is restored. A tst-cleanup1
regression test linked with an older glibc now passes when run
with the newly built glibc. Previously a tst-cleanup1 linked with
an older glibc would segfault when run with an affected glibc build.

Tested on x86_64 with no regressions.

630f4cc3aa [BZ #22637] Fix stack guard size accounting
Previously if user requested S stack and G guard when creating a
thread, the total mapping was S and the actual available stack was
S - G - static_tls, which is not what the user requested.

This patch fixes the guard size accounting by pretending the user
requested S+G stack. This way all later logic works out except
when reporting the user requested stack size (pthread_getattr_np)
or when computing the minimal stack size (__pthread_get_minstack).

Normally this will increase thread stack allocations by one page.
TLS accounting is not affected, that will require a separate fix.

f81ddabffd Linux/x86: Update cancel_jmp_buf to match __jmp_buf_tag [BZ #22563]
On x86, padding in struct __jmp_buf_tag is used for shadow stack pointer
to support shadow stack in Intel Control-flow Enforcemen Technology.
Since the cancel_jmp_buf array is passed to setjmp and longjmp by
casting it to pointer to struct __jmp_buf_tag, it should be as large
as struct __jmp_buf_tag. Otherwise when shadow stack is enabled,
setjmp and longjmp will write and read beyond cancel_jmp_buf when saving
and restoring shadow stack pointer.

This patch adds bits/types/__cancel_jmp_buf_tag.h to define struct
__cancel_jmp_buf_tag so that Linux/x86 can add saved_mask to
cancel_jmp_buf.

500b3a499f Remove __need_list_t and __need_res_state.
These __need macros are only used internally, by nptl/descr.h.
However, including all of resolv.h from descr.h causes build failures
due to resolv.h's dozens of pseudo-struct-field macros, some of which
collide with struct fields in NPTL internal data structures.
Similarly, including all of list.h from descr.h produces an include
cycle, atomic.h -> atomic-machine.h -> tls.h -> descr.h -> list.h ->
atomic.h, and then list.h tries to use atomic.h macros that haven't
been defined yet. So we do need mini-headers for these. In the
list.h case I called it include/list_t.h since it isn't going to be

8f9450a0b7 Add compiler barriers around modifications of the robust mutex list.
Any changes to the per-thread list of robust mutexes currently acquired as
well as the pending-operations entry are not simply sequential code but
basically concurrent with any actions taken by the kernel when it tries
to clean up after a crash. This is not quite like multi-thread concurrency
but more like signal-handler concurrency.
This patch fixes latent bugs by adding compiler barriers where necessary so
that it is ensured that the kernel crash handling sees consistent data.

This is meant to be easy to backport, so we do not use C11-style signal
fences yet.

c579f48edb Remove cached PID/TID in clone
This patch remove the PID cache and usage in current GLIBC code. Current
usage is mainly used a performance optimization to avoid the syscall,
however it adds some issues:

  - The exposed clone syscall will try to set pid/tid to make the new
thread somewhat compatible with current GLIBC assumptions. This cause
a set of issue with new workloads and usecases (such as BZ#17214 and
[1]) as well for new internal usage of clone to optimize other algorithms
(such as clone plus CLONE_VM for posix_spawn, BZ#19957).

  - The caching complexity also added some bugs in the past [2] [3] and
requires more effort of each port to handle such requirements (for
    both clone and vfork implementation).

  - Caching performance gain in mainly on getpid and some specific
code paths. The getpid performance leverage is questionable [4],
either by the idea of getpid being a hotspot as for the getpid
implementation itself (if it is indeed a justifiable hotspot a
vDSO symbol could let to a much more simpler solution).

Other usage is mainly for non usual code paths, such as pthread
    cancellation signal and handling.

For thread creation (on stack allocation) the code simplification in fact
adds some performance gain due the no need of transverse the stack cache
and invalidate each element pid.

Other thread usages will require a direct getpid syscall, such as
cancellation/setxid signal, thread cancellation, thread fail path (at
create_thread), and thread signal (pthread_kill and pthread_sigqueue).
However these are hardly usual hotspots and I think adding a syscall is
justifiable.

It also simplifies both the clone and vfork arch-specific implementation.
And by review each fork implementation there are some discrepancies that
this patch also solves:

  - microblaze clone/vfork does not set/reset the pid/tid field
  - hppa uses the default vfork implementation that fallback to fork.
Since vfork is deprecated I do not think we should bother with it.

The patch also removes the TID caching in clone. My understanding for
such semantic is try provide some pthread usage after a user program
issue clone directly (as done by thread creation with CLONE_PARENT_SETTID
and pthread tid member). However, as stated before in multiple discussions
threads, GLIBC provides clone syscalls without further supporting all this
semantics.

I ran a full make check on x86_64, x32, i686, armhf, aarch64, and powerpc64le.
For sparc32, sparc64, and mips I ran the basic fork and vfork tests from
posix/ folder (on a qemu system). So it would require further testing
on alpha, hppa, ia64, m68k, nios2, s390, sh, and tile (I excluded microblaze
because it is already implementing the patch semantic regarding clone/vfork).

3e2ee6f0e3 Remove sysdeps/nptl/configure.ac.
sysdeps/nptl/configure.ac tests for forced unwind support and the C
cleanup attribute, giving errors if either is unsupported. It does
nothing beyond running those two tests.

Both the attribute, and _Unwind_GetCFA which is used in the forced
unwind test, were added in GCC 3.3. Thus these tests are long
obsolete, and this patch removes the configure fragment running them,
along with associated conditionals.

Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite, and that installed stripped
shared libraries are unchanged by the patch).

771eb1415f nptl: Fix abort in case of set*id failure [BZ #17135]
If a call to the set*id functions fails in a multi-threaded program,
the abort introduced in commit 13f7fe35ae
was triggered.

We address by checking that all calls to set*id on all threads give
the same result, and only abort if we see success followed by failure
(or vice versa).

439bf404b8 Allow a single-threaded program to cancel itself
There is nothing in the POSIX specification to disallow a
single-threaded program from cancelling itself, so we forcibly enable
multiple_threads to allow the next available cancellation point in the
thread to run.

Also added additional tests to cover various cancellation scenarios.
