clang emits an warning when a double alias redirection is used, to warn
the the original symbol will be used even when weak definition is
overridden. However, this is a common pattern for weak_alias, where
multiple alias are set to same symbol.

the changes not generated by scripts/update-copyrights and subsequent
build / regeneration of generated files. As well as the usual annual
updates, mainly dates in --version output (minus csu/version.c which
previously had to be handled manually but is now successfully updated
by update-copyrights), there is a small change to the copyright notice
in NEWS which should let NEWS get updated automatically next year.
Please remember to include 2022 in the dates for any new files added
in future (which means updating any existing uncommitted patches you
have that add new files to use the new copyright dates in them).
I used these shell commands:

There are several packages like sysvinit and buildroot that expect
-lutil to work. Rather than impacting them with having to change
the linker flags provide an empty libutil.a.
We stopped adding "Contributed by" or similar lines in sources in 2012
in favour of git logs and keeping the Contributors section of the
glibc manual up to date. Removing these lines makes the license
header a bit more consistent across files and also removes the
possibility of error in attribution when license blocks or files are
copied across since the contributed-by lines don't actually reflect
reality in those cases.
Move all "Contributed by" and similar lines (Written by, Test by,
etc.) into a new file CONTRIBUTED-BY to retain record of these
contributions. These contributors are also mentioned in
manual/contrib.texi, so we just maintain this additional record as a
courtesy to the earlier developers.
The following scripts were used to filter a list of files to edit in
place and to clean up the CONTRIBUTED-BY file respectively. These
were not added to the glibc sources because they're not expected to be
of any use in future given that this is a one time task:

The symbols forkpty, login, login_tty, logout, logwtmp, openpty
were moved using scripts/move-symbol-to-libc.py.
This is a single commit because most of the symbols are tied together
via forkpty, for example.
Several changes to use hidden prototypes are needed. This commit
also updates pseudoterminal terminology on modified lines.
For 390 (31-bit), this commit follows the existing style for the
compat symbol version creation.

manual. Also clean up the unlockpt implementation a bit, assuming
that TIOCSPTLCK is always defined.

The test now requires working /dev/pts pseudo-terminals.
A new subtest (test_not_ptmx) attempts to call grantpt on a
pseudo-terminal that is not a ptmx device. POSIX requires an EINVAL
error in this case.

The __clock_gettime internal function is not supporting 64 bit time on
architectures with __WORDSIZE == 32 and __TIMESIZE != 64 (like e.g. ARM 32
bit).
The __clock_gettime64 function shall be used instead in the glibc itself as
it supports 64 bit time on those systems.
This patch does not bring any changes to systems with __WORDSIZE == 64 as
for them the __clock_gettime64 is aliased to __clock_gettime (in
./include/time.h).

have that add new files to use the new copyright dates in them).
This reduces the possible error scenarios considerably because
no longer can file seek fail, leaving the file descriptor in an
inconsistent state and out of sync with the cache.
As a result, it is possible to avoid setting file_offset to -1
to make an error persistent. Instead, subsequent calls will retry
the operation and report any errors returned by the kernel.
This change also avoids reading the file from the start if pututline
is called multiple times, to work around lock acquisition failures
due to timeouts.

It has been reported that due to lack of fairness in POSIX file
locking, the current reader-to-writer lock upgrade can result in
lack of forward progress. Acquiring the write lock directly
hopefully avoids this issue if there are only writers.
This also fixes bug 24882 due to the cache revalidation in
__libc_pututline.

Since gettimeofday will shortly be implemented in terms of
clock_gettime on all platforms, internal code should use clock_gettime
directly; in addition to removing a layer of indirection, this will
allow us to remove the PLT-bypass gunk for gettimeofday. (We can't
quite do that yet, but it'll be coming later in this patch series.)
In many cases, the changed code does fewer conversions.
The changed code always assumes __clock_gettime (CLOCK_REALTIME)
cannot fail. Most of the call sites were assuming gettimeofday could
not fail, but a few places were checking for errors. POSIX says
clock_gettime can only fail if the clock constant is invalid or
unsupported, and CLOCK_REALTIME is the one and only clock constant
that's required to be supported. For consistency I grepped the entire
source tree for any other places that checked for errors from
__clock_gettime (CLOCK_REALTIME), found one, and changed it too.
(For the record, POSIX also says gettimeofday can never fail.)
(It would be nice if we could declare that GNU systems will always
support CLOCK_MONOTONIC as well as CLOCK_REALTIME; there are several
places where we are using CLOCK_REALTIME where _MONOTONIC would be
more appropriate, and/or trying to use _MONOTONIC and then falling
back to _REALTIME. But the Hurd doesn't support CLOCK_MONOTONIC yet,
and it looks like adding it would involve substantial changes to
gnumach's internals and API. Oh well.)
A few Hurd-specific files were changed to use __host_get_time instead
of __clock_gettime, as this seemed tidier. We also assume this cannot
fail. Skimming the code in gnumach leads me to believe the only way
it could fail is if __mach_host_self also failed, and our
Hurd-specific code consistently assumes that can't happen, so I'm
going with that.
With the exception of support/support_test_main.c, test cases are not
modified, mainly because I didn't want to have to figure out which
test cases were testing gettimeofday specifically.
The definition of GETTIME in sysdeps/generic/memusage.h had a typo and
was not reading tv_sec at all. I fixed this. It appears nobody has been
generating malloc traces on a machine that doesn't have a superseding
definition.
There are a whole bunch of places where the code could be simplified
by factoring out timespec subtraction and/or comparison logic, but I
want to keep this patch as mechanical as possible.

The internal_getut_r function updates the file_offset variable and
therefore must always update last_entry as well.
Previously, if pututxline could not upgrade the read lock to a
write lock, internal_getut_r would update file_offset only,
without updating last_entry, and a subsequent call would not
overwrite the existing utmpx entry at file_offset, instead
creating a new entry. This has been observed to cause unbounded
file growth in high-load situations.
This commit removes the buffer argument to internal_getut_r and
updates the last_entry variable directly, along with file_offset.

Commit 06ab719d30 ("Fix Linux fcntl OFD
locks for non-LFS architectures (BZ#20251)") introduced the use of
fcntl64 into the utmp implementation. However, the lock file
structure was not updated to struct flock64 at that point.
If the file processing takes a long time for some reason, SIGALRM can
arrive while the file is still being processed. At that point, file
access will fail with EINTR. Disarming the timer after lock
acquisition avoids that. (If there was a previous alarm, it is the
responsibility of the caller to deal with the EINTR error.)
Commit 5a3afa9738 (login: Replace
macro-based control flow with function calls in utmp) introduced
a regression because after it, __libc_updwtmp attempts to unlock
the wrong file descriptor.
There is just one file-based implementation, so this dispatch
mechanism is unnecessary. Instead of the vtable pointer
__libc_utmp_jump_table, use a non-negative file_fd as the indicator
that the backend is initialized.
This patch fixes the OFD ("file private") locks for architectures that
support non-LFS flock definition (__USE_FILE_OFFSET64 not defined). The
issue in this case is both F_OFD_{GETLK,SETLK,SETLKW} and
F_{SET,GET}L{W}K64 expects a flock64 argument and when using old
F_OFD_* flags with a non LFS flock argument the kernel might interpret
the underlying data wrongly. Kernel idea originally was to avoid using
such flags in non-LFS syscall, but since GLIBC uses fcntl with LFS
semantic as default it is possible to provide the functionality and
avoid the bogus struct kernel passing by adjusting the struct manually
for the required flags.
The idea follows other LFS interfaces that provide two symbols:
1. A new LFS fcntl64 is added on default ABI with the usual macros to
select it for FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64.
2. The Linux non-LFS fcntl use a stack allocated struct flock64 for
F_OFD_{GETLK,SETLK,SETLKW} copy the results on the user provided
struct.
3. Keep a compat symbol with old broken semantic for architectures
that do not define __OFF_T_MATCHES_OFF64_T.
So for architectures which defines __USE_FILE_OFFSET64, fcntl64 will
aliased to fcntl and no adjustment would be required. So to actually
use F_OFD_* with LFS support the source must be built with LFS support
(_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64).
Also F_OFD_SETLKW command is handled a cancellation point, as for
F_SETLKW{64}.

Newer kernels expose the ioctl TIOCGPTPEER [1] call to userspace which allows to
safely allocate a file descriptor for a pty slave based solely on the master
file descriptor. This allows us to avoid path-based operations and makes this
function a lot safer in the face of devpts mounts in different mount namespaces.

This patch consolidate the remaning non cancellable syscall definitions
on not-cancel.h header. They are:
* __fcntl_nocancel: Moved from fcntl.h to not-cancel.h.
* __sigsuspend_nocancel: Removed since 988f991b50 it is not used or
defined anymore.
* __nanosleep_nocancel: Removed since 6f33fd046b it is defined on
not-cancel.h.
Now all non-cancellable syscall definition are defined on not-cancel
(the only exceptions is the stdio symbol __fxprintf_nocancel which
uses non cancellable open and it is used on getopt implementation).

`ptsname_r' is declared in stdlib.h to only accept a `nonnull'
second argument and therefore GCC may choose to make optimizations
based on the assumption that this argument is NULL. This means
that potentially, GCC can optimize away the NULL check at some
point in the future. Since this is a programming interface, we
might as well remove the NULL check ourselves.
This also warrants a change to the `ptsname_r' manual page that
must be submitted to the corresponding mailing list.
In addition, remove the NULL buffer test in login/tst-ptsname.c.
The types affected are __sig_atomic_t, sig_atomic_t, __sigset_t,
sigset_t, sigval_t, sigevent_t, and siginfo_t. __sig_atomic_t is a
scalar, so it's now directly available from bits/types.h. The others
get bits/types/ headers.
Side effects include: There have been small changes to which
non-signal headers expose which subset of the signal-related types.
A couple of architectures' nested siginfo_t fields had to be renamed
to prevent undesired macro expansion. Internal code that wants to
manipulate signal masks must now include <sigsetops.h> (which is not
installed) and should be aware that __sigaddset, __sigandset,
__sigdelset, __sigemptyset, and __sigorset no longer return a value
(unlike the public API). Relatedly, the public signal.h no longer
