This patch adds fall-through comments in some cases where -Wextra
produces implicit-fallthrough warnings.
The patch is non-exhaustive. Apart from architecture-specific code
for non-x86_64 architectures, it does not change sunrpc/xdr.c (legacy
code, probably should have such changes, but left to be dealt with
separately), or places that already had comments about the
fall-through but not matching the form expected by
-Wimplicit-fallthrough=3 (the default level with -Wextra; my
inclination is to adjust those comments to match rather than
downgrading to -Wimplicit-fallthrough=1 to allow any comment), or one
place where I thought the implicit fallthrough was not correct and so
should be handled separately as a bug fix. I think the key thing to
consider in review of this patch is whether the fall-through is indeed
intended and correct in each place where such a comment is added.
Tested for x86_64.

The IPv4 address parser in the getaddrinfo function is changed so that
it does not ignore trailing whitespace and all characters after it.
For backwards compatibility, the getaddrinfo function still recognizes
legacy name syntax, such as 192.000.002.010 interpreted as 192.0.2.8
(octal).
This commit does not change the behavior of inet_addr and inet_aton.
gethostbyname already had additional sanity checks (but is switched
over to the new __inet_aton_exact function for completeness as well).
To avoid sending the problematic query names over DNS, commit
6ca53a2453 ("resolv: Do not send queries
for non-host-names in nss_dns [BZ #24112]") is needed.
Before this commit, nss_dns would send a query which did not contain a
host name as the query name (such as invalid\032name.example.com) and
then reject the answer in getanswer_r and gaih_getanswer_slice, using
a check based on res_hnok. With this commit, no query is sent, and a
host-not-found error is returned to NSS without network interaction.
The __libc_freeres framework does not extend to non-libc.so objects.
This causes problems in general for valgrind and mtrace detecting
unfreed objects in both libdl.so and libpthread.so. This change is
a pre-requisite to properly moving the malloc hooks out of malloc
since such a move now requires precise accounting of all allocated
data before destructors are run.
This commit adds a proper hook in libc.so.6 for both libdl.so and
for libpthread.so, this ensures that shm-directory.c which uses
freeit () to free memory is called properly. We also remove the
nptl_freeres hook and fall back to using weak-ref-and-check idiom
for a loaded libpthread.so, thus making this process similar for
all DSOs.
Lastly we follow best practice and use explicit free calls for
both libdl.so and libpthread.so instead of the generic hook process
which has undefined order.
Tested on x86_64 with no regressions.

The old implementation based on hsearch_r used an ad-hoc C string
encoding and produced an incorrect format on the wire for domain

This commit switches to ns_name_pton for the wire format conversion

with a suitable comparison function to locate compression targets.

This patch, relative to a tree with
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2017-11/msg00797.html> (pending

function __p_secstodate into a compat symbol not available for new

handling of TKEY) are changed to use %lu to print times instead of
trying to pretty-print the times any more.

[!TEST_COMPAT (libresolv, GLIBC_2_0, GLIBC_2_27)] (do_test): Add
implementation returning 77.
The resolv/res_debug.c function p_secstodate (which is a public
function exported from libresolv, taking an unsigned long argument)
does:
struct tm timebuf;
time = __gmtime_r(&clock, &timebuf);
time->tm_year += 1900;
time->tm_mon += 1;
sprintf(output, "%04d%02d%02d%02d%02d%02d",
time->tm_year, time->tm_mon, time->tm_mday,
time->tm_hour, time->tm_min, time->tm_sec);
If __gmtime_r returns NULL (because the year overflows the range of
int), this will dereference a null pointer. Otherwise, if the
computed year does not fit in four characters, this will cause a
buffer overrun of the fixed-size 15-byte buffer. With current GCC
mainline, there is a compilation failure because of the possible
buffer overrun.
I couldn't find a specification for how this function is meant to
behave, but Paul pointed to RFC 4034 as relevant to the cases where
this function is called from within glibc. The function's interface
is inherently problematic when dates beyond Y2038 might be involved,
because of the ambiguity in how to interpret 32-bit timestamps as such
dates (the RFC suggests interpreting times as being within 68 years of
the present date, which would mean some kind of interface whose
behavior depends on the present date).
This patch works on the basis of making a minimal fix in preparation
for obsoleting the function. The function is made to handle times in
the interval [0, 0x7fffffff] only, on all platforms, with <overflow>
used as the output string in other cases (and errno set to EOVERFLOW
in such cases). This seems to be a reasonable state for the function
to be in when made a compat symbol by a future patch, being compatible
with any existing uses for existing timestamps without trying to work
for later timestamps. Results independent of the range of time_t also
simplify the testcase.
I couldn't persuade GCC to recognize the ranges of the struct tm
fields by adding explicit range checks with a call to
__builtin_unreachable if outside the range (this looks similar to
<https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=80776>), so having added
a range check on the input, this patch then disables the
-Wformat-overflow= warning for the sprintf call (I prefer that to the
use of strftime, as being more transparently correct without knowing
what each of %m and %M etc. is).
I do not know why this build failure should be new with mainline GCC
(that is, I don't know what GCC change might have introduced it, when
the basic functionality for such warnings was already in GCC 7).
I do not know if this is a security issue (that is, if there are
plausible ways in which a date before -999 or after 9999 from an
untrusted source might end up in this function). The system clock is
arguably an untrusted source (in that e.g. NTP is insecure), but
probably not to that extent (NTP can't communicate such wild
timestamps), and uses from within glibc are limited to 32-bit inputs.
Tested with build-many-glibcs.py that this restores the build for arm
with yesterday's mainline GCC. Also tested for x86_64 and x86.

Remove the bogus targets (and source) that supposedly build ga_test.
This code was added to resolv very early in the development process
but does not appear to be an actual test program. The target for
building this file is tests but because the glibc Make system is
built the way it is, the target is overriden by higher-level tests
targets and, therefore, the ga_test program is never built. Removing
the target and the source code makes the resolv/Makefile less confusing.

Various subdirectories of glibc include Banner files to put some text
in the output of executing libc.so.6, under "Available extensions".
Some of those subdirectories (e.g. crypt) may originally have been
add-ons (and so optional, so a particular glibc build might or might
not have included them), but except for libidn they aren't now (or if
only included in some builds, in the case of soft-fp, the inclusion
depends on the architecture for which glibc is configured rather than
having any glibc configuration for which it's an optional feature),
and it doesn't seem useful for the libc.so.6 output to call out a few
features like that.

A dot-less host name without an /etc/resolv.conf file caused an

Thanks to Andreas Schwab for debugging assistence.
This commit enhances the stub resolver to reload the configuration
in the per-thread _res object if the /etc/resolv.conf file has
changed. The resolver checks whether the application has modified
_res and will not overwrite the _res object in that case.
The struct resolv_context mechanism is used to check the
configuration file only once per name lookup.
This commit adds the remaining unchanging members (which are loaded
from /etc/resolv.conf) to struct resolv_conf.
The extended name server list is currently not used by the stub
resolver. The switch depends on a cleanup: The _u._ext.nssocks
array stores just a single socket, and needs to be replaced with
a single socket value.
(The compatibility gethostname implementation does not use the
extended addres sort list, either. Updating the compat code is
not worthwhile.)
This change uses the extended resolver state in struct resolv_conf to
store the search list. If applications have not patched the _res
object directly, this extended search list will be used by the stub
resolver during name resolution.
This change provides additional resolver configuration state which
is not exposed through the _res ABI. It reuses the existing
initstamp field in the supposedly-private part of _res. Some effort
is undertaken to avoid memory safety issues introduced by applications
which directly patch the _res object.
With this commit, only the initstamp field is moved into struct
resolv_conf. Additional members will be added later, eventually
migrating the entire resolver configuration.
struct resolv_context objects provide a temporary resolver context
which does not change during a name lookup operation. Only when the
outmost context is created, the stub resolver configuration is
verified to be current (at present, only against previous res_init
calls). Subsequent attempts to obtain the context will reuse the
result of the initial verification operation.
struct resolv_context can also be extended in the future to store
data which needs to be deallocated during thread cancellation.
Some Linux kernels have very aggressive ICMP rate limiting on the
loopback interface. This commit introduces a minimal echoing DNS server
inside the network namespace, so that there is no need for ICMP error
messages anymore.
Many callers of __res_maybe_init also call _res_hconf_init.
Additional calls to the latter do not hurt because the function
does its work only once. (/etc/hosts.conf is not reloaded or
even checked for changes.) This means that we can simplify the
code by calling _res_hconf_init directly from __res_vinit.
Every file that uses libc_hidden_nolink_sunrpc or
libnsl_hidden_nolink_def needs to include shlib-compat.h. Currently,
most of them are getting it via stdio.h, because libio.h refers to
SHLIB_COMPAT when _LIBC is defined, so it includes shlib-compat.h. My
experimental patch to not install libio.h breaks that chain; stdio.h
no longer pulls in libio.h even for internal users.
Accordingly, this patch adds #include <shlib-compat.h> to many files
in sunrpc/ and nis/. There are also a small number of really obvious
fixups to includes that caught my eye while proofreading the patch -
not including headers twice in a row, not worrying about portability
to Ultrix anymore, sort of thing.

The types affected are __sig_atomic_t, sig_atomic_t, __sigset_t,
sigset_t, sigval_t, sigevent_t, and siginfo_t. __sig_atomic_t is a
scalar, so it's now directly available from bits/types.h. The others
get bits/types/ headers.
Side effects include: There have been small changes to which
non-signal headers expose which subset of the signal-related types.
A couple of architectures' nested siginfo_t fields had to be renamed
to prevent undesired macro expansion. Internal code that wants to
manipulate signal masks must now include <sigsetops.h> (which is not
installed) and should be aware that __sigaddset, __sigandset,
__sigdelset, __sigemptyset, and __sigorset no longer return a value
(unlike the public API). Relatedly, the public signal.h no longer
declares any of those functions. The obsolete sigmask() macro no
longer has a system-specific definition -- in the cases where it
matters, it didn't work anyway.
New Linux architectures should create bits/siginfo-arch.h and/or
bits/siginfo-consts-arch.h to customize their siginfo_t, rather than
duplicating everything in bits/siginfo.h (which no longer exists).
Add new __SI_* macros if necessary. Ports to other operating systems
are strongly encouraged to generalize this scheme further.

These __need macros are only used internally, by nptl/descr.h.
However, including all of resolv.h from descr.h causes build failures
due to resolv.h's dozens of pseudo-struct-field macros, some of which
collide with struct fields in NPTL internal data structures.
Similarly, including all of list.h from descr.h produces an include
cycle, atomic.h -> atomic-machine.h -> tls.h -> descr.h -> list.h ->
atomic.h, and then list.h tries to use atomic.h macros that haven't
been defined yet. So we do need mini-headers for these. In the
list.h case I called it include/list_t.h since it isn't going to be
installed.

The address family splitting via format_ai_family made unpredictable
the place where the canonname field was printed. This commit adjusts
the implementation so that the ai_flags is checked for consistency
across the list, and ai_canonname must only be present on the first
list element.
Tests for AI_CANONNAME are added to resolv/tst-resolv-basic.
conform/ namespace tests of arpa/inet.h, netdb.h and netinet/in.h fail
for UNIX98 and XPG42 because of inclusion of stdint.h, which defines
macros not permitted in those headers for those standards. UNIX98
allows them to include inttypes.h, but (predating C99) has restricted
inttypes.h contents (not yet tested in the conform/ tests) not
including those macros; XPG4.2 has no such permission and no
inttypes.h / stdint.h at all.
This patch rearranges the headers to avoid this issue. intN_t
definitions move to bits/stdint-intn.h, and uintN_t definitions to
bits/stdint-uintn.h. (These are not bits/types/ headers because they
each define four types. They are separate rather than just a single
header because sys/types.h defines intN_t but u_intN_t rather than
uintN_t - and while sys/types.h could define uintN_t because of the
POSIX reservation of *_t, existing practice there is largely to
condition types on appropriate feature test macros, and indeed there
is at least one open bug report (14553) about a type that's not
so-conditioned, so maybe types there should actually have conditions
added where appropriate.) The affected network headers are then made
to include bits/stdint-uintn.h instead of stdint.h. This allows six
XFAILs to be removed.
This doesn't do anything about inttypes.h defining more than it should
for UNIX98, but we don't have conformtest expectations for that case
at present (and my inclination is that a fix for that should be as
local as possible - affecting only inttypes.h, not stdint.h, only for
the case of __USE_UNIX98 && !__USE_ISOC99).
Tested for x86_64.

EDNS is disabled by default (so there is interoperability issue), and
the fallback code is problematic because it prevents an application
from obtaining DNSSEC data after a FORMERR response.
This bug did not affect name resolution because those functions
indirectly call ns_name_pack with a buffer which is always larger
than the generated query packet, even in the case of the
longest-possible domain name.
The RES_F_* constants are only used with the private _res._flags
member. RES_EXHAUSTIVE is unused. The removed function
declarations refer to functions not actually exported by glibc,
so they are unusable by applications.
posix/wordexp-test.c used libc-internal.h for PTR_ALIGN_DOWN; similar
to what was done with libc-diag.h, I have split the definitions of
cast_to_integer, ALIGN_UP, ALIGN_DOWN, PTR_ALIGN_UP, and PTR_ALIGN_DOWN
to a new header, libc-pointer-arith.h.
It then occurred to me that the remaining declarations in libc-internal.h
are mostly to do with early initialization, and probably most of the
files including it, even in the core code, don't need it anymore. Indeed,
only 19 files actually need what remains of libc-internal.h. 23 others
need libc-diag.h instead, and 12 need libc-pointer-arith.h instead.
No file needs more than one of them, and 16 don't need any of them!
So, with this patch, libc-internal.h stops including libc-diag.h as
well as losing the pointer arithmetic macros, and all including files
are adjusted.

This change also removes the preprocessor-based function renaming.
It also applied to tests in resolv/, which ended up running against
the historic functions.

resolv/Versions file.
The changes to fix bug 20729 introduced an error which removed an
ignore diagnostic from -O2 by using the new -Os related macro.
This broke ppc64 builds. This commit fixes the mistake.
Tested on x86, x86_64, ppc64, ppc64le, arm, aarch64, and s390x.
This commit adds a new DIAG_IGNORE_Os_NEEDS_COMMENT which is only
enabled when compiling with -Os. This allows developers working on
-Os enabled builds to mark false-positive warnings without impacting the
warnings emitted at -O2.
Then using the new DIAG_IGNORE_Os_NEEDS_COMMENT we fix 6 warnings
generated with GCC 5 to get -Os builds working again.
In ns_name_ntop, the NS_CMPRSFLGS check is no longer needed because
labellen (called earlier) already rejects everything which is not
a plain label (compression references and extended label types).
Many headers are expected to expose a subset of the type definitions
in time.h. time.h has a whole bunch of messy logic for conditionally
defining some its types and structs, but, as best I can tell, this
has never worked 100%. In particular, __need_timespec is ineffective
if _TIME_H has already been defined, which means that if you compile
#include <time.h>
#include <sched.h>
with e.g. -fsyntax-only -std=c89 -Wall -Wsystem-headers, you will get
In file included from test.c:2:0:
/usr/include/sched.h:74:57: warning: "struct timespec" declared inside
parameter list will not be visible outside of this definition or declaration
extern int sched_rr_get_interval (__pid_t __pid, struct timespec *__t) __THROW;
^~~~~~~~
And if you want to _use_ sched_rr_get_interval in a TU compiled that
way, you're hosed.
This patch replaces all of that with small bits/types/TYPE.h headers
as introduced earlier. time.h and bits/time.h are now *much* simpler,
and a lot of other headers are slightly simpler.

New wrapper headers.
The types u_char, u_short, u_int, u_long, ushort, uint, ulong, u_int8_t,
u_int16_t, u_int32_t, u_int64_t, quad_t, and u_quad_t are BSDisms that
have never been standardized. While glibc should continue to *provide*
these types for compatibility's sake, its public headers should not
use them.
The meat of this change was mechanically generated by the following
shell command:
perl -pi~ -e '
s/\b(__)?u_char\b/unsigned char/g;
s/\b(__)?u_?short\b/unsigned short/g;
s/\b(__)?u_?int\b/unsigned int/g;

$(find . \( -false $(sed 's/^/-o -name /' all-installed-headers) \
\) -printf '%P\n' | sort -u)))
where 'all-installed-headers' was a list of the basenames of all installed
header files, manually extracted from the Makefiles. Non-installed
wrapper headers in include/ are also adjusted, for consistency.
I then manually fixed up indentation and line-wrapping.
sys/types.h and bits/types.h are excluded because they must continue
to define the u_* types (under __USE_MISC) for compatibility with
applications. They do not use these types themselves.
All headers that (transitively) include rpc/types.h are also excluded,
for three reasons. First, the u_* types are defined by rpc/types.h,
unconditionally (not just under __USE_MISC) so they are logically part
of the SunRPC API. Second, many of those headers appear to be
machine-generated. Third, it's my understanding that we are getting
rid of as much of SunRPC as possible in the near future.
(The one file under sunrpc/ that's touched, sunrpc/rpc/rpc_des.h, does
*not* include rpc/types.h. This may itself be a bug.)
After changing from u_intNN_t to uintNN_t, a number of headers now
need to include stdint.h to pick up those types. It might be more
hygenic, namespace-wise, to use __uintNN_t instead, but none of these
headers are bound by ISO or POSIX to do so, and it's unlikely that
anyone using them will be bothered. (The two files that were using
__-prefixed versions of the u_types, sysdeps/mach/hurd/net/route.h and
sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/net/route.h, both already also contained uses of
the unprefixed versions.)
Some of these files directly included features.h and/or sys/cdefs.h,
which I removed, as the style generally seems to be to let sys/types.h
do that for us. (This does not change the set of definitions exposed
by any header; sys/types.h unconditionally includes both features.h
and sys/cdefs.h.)
One file included asm/types.h unnecessarily.

Include stdint.h for uintNN_t definitions.
Don't include sys/cdefs.h, features.h, or asm/types.h directly.
Some headers did not include all of their prerequisite headers.
* rpcsvc/nislib.h: Include rpcsvc/nis.h.
* sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/netrose/rose.h:
Include sys/socket.h and netax25/ax25.h.
<endian.h> only defines BYTE_ORDER, BIG_ENDIAN, LITTLE_ENDIAN,
etc. under __USE_MISC; glibc's headers should use __BYTE_ORDER,
__BIG_ENDIAN, __LITTLE_ENDIAN, etc. instead.
* inet/netinet/icmp6.h, inet/netinet/ip6.h
* resolv/arpa/nameser_compat.h:
Use __BYTE_ORDER etc. instead of BYTE_ORDER etc.
sys/types.h only conditionally defines caddr_t and clockid_t.
* sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/sys/quota.h:
Use __caddr_t instead of caddr_t.
* sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/sys/timerfd.h:
Use __clockid_t instead of clockid_t.
Remove a #warning that was the sole actual problem with using sys/ipc.h
without _GNU_SOURCE/_XOPEN_SOURCE.
* sysvipc/sys/ipc.h: Remove unnecessary #warning.
_LIBC, __USE_XOPEN2K8, and __STDC_VERSION__ are not always defined.
It seems to me that _LIBC should not appear in installed headers, but
avoiding that for argp specifically would require more surgery than
feels appropriate for this patch set. It's possible that
"#ifdef _LIBC" would be sufficient, but I wanted to be conservative.
All three versions of bits/socket.h want to know whether __flexarr
will produce a real flexible array member -- specifically, one that
doesn't alter sizeof(the structure containing it). They were testing
for this with a complicated #if condition that did not agree with
sys/cdefs.h and that tripped -Wundef warnings under -std=c90.
I added a new macro to sys/cdefs.h, __glibc_c99_flexarr_available,
which reveals exactly what these headers want to know. I also took
the opportunity to flatten the rather messy conditional nest defining
__flexarr.
* argp/argp.h: Check whether _LIBC is defined before expanding it.
* posix/glob.h: Check whether __USE_XOPEN2K8 is defined instead
of expanding it.
* misc/sys/cdefs.h: Tidy up conditional nest defining __flexarr.
Define __glibc_c99_flexarr_available to 1 when the compiler
supports C99-compatible flexible array members, 0 otherwise.
* sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/bits/socket.h
* sysdeps/mach/hurd/bits/socket.h
* bits/socket.h: Use __glibc_c99_flexarr_available in
definitions of struct cmsghdr and CMSG_DATA.
The macros are no longer up-to-date, and the classification is not
useful. In this particular case, removal without prior deprecation
seems the right approach.
_res_hconf.initialized was not suitable for use in a multi-threaded
environment due to the lack of atomics and memory barriers. Use of it was
also unnecessary because _res_hconf_init did the right thing by using
__libc_once. This patch fixes the glibc-internal uses by just calling
_res_hconf_init unconditionally, and switches to a release MO atomic store
for _res_hconf.initialized to fix the glibc side of the synchronization
problem (which will maintain backward compatibility, but cannot fix the
lack of acquire MO on any glibc-external loads).
[BZ #20477]
* resolv/res_hconf.c (do_init): Use atomic access.
* resolv/res_hconf.h: Add comments.
* nscd/aicache.c (addhstaiX): Call _res_hconf_init unconditionally.
* nss/getXXbyYY_r.c (REENTRANT_NAME): Likewise.
* sysdeps/posix/getaddrinfo.c (gaih_inet): Likewise.
