6fad891dfd stdio: Remove the usage of $(fno-unit-at-a-time) for siglist.c
The siglist.c is built with -fno-toplevel-reorder to avoid compiler
to reorder the compat assembly directives due an assembler
issue [1] (fixed on 2.39).

This patch removes the compiler flags by split the compat symbol
generation in two phases. First the __sys_siglist and __sys_sigabbrev
without any compat symbol directive is preprocessed to generate an
assembly source code. This generate assembly is then used as input
on a platform agnostic siglist.S which then creates the compat
definitions. This prevents compiler to move any compat directive
prior the _sys_errlist definition itself.

Checked on a make check run-built-tests=no on all affected ABIs.

I used these shell commands:

309548bec3 Support C2X printf %b, %B
C2X adds a printf %b format (see
<http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg14/www/docs/n2630.pdf>, accepted
for C2X), for outputting integers in binary. It also has recommended
practice for a corresponding %B format (like %b, but %#B starts the
output with 0B instead of 0b). Add support for these formats to
glibc.

One existing test uses %b as an example of an unknown format, to test
how glibc printf handles unknown formats; change that to %v. Use of
%b and %B as user-registered format specifiers continues to work (and
we already have a test that covers that, tst-printfsz.c).

Note that C2X also has scanf %b support, plus support for binary
constants starting 0b in strtol (base 0 and 2) and scanf %i (strtol
base 0 and scanf %i coming from a previous paper that added binary
integer literals). I intend to implement those features in a separate
patch or patches; as discussed in the thread starting at
<https://sourceware.org/pipermail/libc-alpha/2020-December/120414.html>,
they will be more complicated because they involve adding extra public
symbols to ensure compatibility with existing code that might not
expect 0b constants to be handled by strtol base 0 and 2 and scanf %i,
whereas simply adding a new format specifier poses no such
compatibility concerns.

Note that the actual conversion from integer to string uses existing
code in _itoa.c. That code has special cases for bases 8, 10 and 16,
probably so that the compiler can optimize division by an integer
constant in the code for those bases. If desired such special cases
could easily be added for base 2 as well, but that would be an
optimization, not actually needed for these printf formats to work.

Tested for x86_64 and x86. Also tested with build-many-glibcs.py for
aarch64-linux-gnu with GCC mainline to make sure that the test does
indeed build with GCC 12 (where format checking warnings are enabled
for most of the test).

db6c4935fa Fix memmove call in vfprintf-internal.c:group_number
A recent GCC mainline change introduces errors of the form:

vfprintf-internal.c: In function 'group_number':
vfprintf-internal.c:2093:15: error: 'memmove' specified bound between 9223372036854775808 and 18446744073709551615 exceeds maximum object size 9223372036854775807 [-Werror=stringop-overflow=]
 2093 |               memmove (w, s, (front_ptr -s) * sizeof (CHAR_T));
      |               ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is a genuine bug in the glibc code: s > front_ptr is always true
at this point in the code, and the intent is clearly for the
subtraction to be the other way round. The other arguments to the
memmove call here also appear to be wrong; w and s point just *after*
the destination and source for copying the rest of the number, so the
size needs to be subtracted to get appropriate pointers for the
copying. Adjust the memmove call to conform to the apparent intent of
the code, so fixing the -Wstringop-overflow error.

Now, if the original code were ever executed, a buffer overrun would
result. However, I believe this code (introduced in commit
edc1686af0, "vfprintf: Reuse work_buffer
in group_number", so in glibc 2.26) is unreachable in prior glibc
releases (so there is no need for a bug in Bugzilla, no need to
consider any backports unless someone wants to build older glibc
releases with GCC 12 and no possibility of this buffer overrun
resulting in a security issue).

work_buffer is 1000 bytes / 250 wide characters. This case is only
reachable if an initial part of the number, plus a grouped copy of the
rest of the number, fail to fit in that space; that is, if the grouped
number fails to fit in the space. In the wide character case,
grouping is always one wide character, so even with a locale (of which
there aren't any in glibc) grouping every digit, a number would need
to occupy at least 125 wide characters to overflow, and a 64-bit
integer occupies at most 23 characters in octal including a leading 0.
In the narrow character case, the multibyte encoding of the grouping
separator would need to be at least 42 bytes to overflow, again
supposing grouping every digit, but MB_LEN_MAX is 16. So even if we
admit the case of artificially constructed locales not shipped with
glibc, given that such a locale would need to use one of the character
sets supported by glibc, this code cannot be reached at present. (And
POSIX only actually specifies the ' flag for grouping for decimal
output, though glibc acts on it for other bases as well.)

With binary output (if you consider use of grouping there to be
valid), you'd need a 15-byte multibyte character for overflow; I don't
know if any supported character set has such a character (if, again,
we admit constructed locales using grouping every digit and a grouping
separator chosen to have a multibyte encoding as long as possible, as
well as accepting use of grouping with binary), but given that we have
this code at all (clearly it's not *correct*, or in accordance with
the principle of avoiding arbitrary limits, to skip grouping on
running out of internal space like that), I don't think it should need
any further changes for binary printf support to go in.

On the other hand, support for large sizes of _BitInt in printf (see
the N2858 proposal) *would* require something to be done about such
arbitrary limits (presumably using dynamic allocation in printf again,
for sufficiently large _BitInt arguments only - currently only
floating-point uses dynamic allocation, and, as previously discussed,
that could actually be replaced by bounded allocation given smarter
code).

Tested with build-many-glibcs.py for aarch64-linux-gnu (GCC mainline).
Also tested natively for x86_64.

a312e8fe6d Fix stdio-common tests for GCC 12 -Waddress
My glibc bot shows failures building the testsuite with GCC mainline
across all architectures:

tst-vfprintf-width-prec.c: In function 'do_test':
tst-vfprintf-width-prec.c:90:16: error: the comparison will always evaluate as 'false' for the address of 'result' will never be NULL [-Werror=address]

   89 |     wchar_t result[100];
      |             ^~~~~~

This is clearly a correct warning; the comparison against NULL is
clearly a cut-and-paste mistake from an earlier case in the test that
does use calloc. Thus, remove the unnecessary check for NULL shown up
by the warning.

Similarly, two other tests have bogus comparisons against NULL; remove
those as well:

30891f35fa Remove "Contributed by" lines
We stopped adding "Contributed by" or similar lines in sources in 2012
in favour of git logs and keeping the Contributors section of the
glibc manual up to date. Removing these lines makes the license
header a bit more consistent across files and also removes the
possibility of error in attribution when license blocks or files are
copied across since the contributed-by lines don't actually reflect
reality in those cases.

Move all "Contributed by" and similar lines (Written by, Test by,
etc.) into a new file CONTRIBUTED-BY to retain record of these
contributions. These contributors are also mentioned in
manual/contrib.texi, so we just maintain this additional record as a
courtesy to the earlier developers.

The following scripts were used to filter a list of files to edit in
place and to clean up the CONTRIBUTED-BY file respectively. These
were not added to the glibc sources because they're not expected to be
of any use in future given that this is a one time task:

2d2d9f2b48 Move malloc hooks into a compat DSO
Remove all malloc hook uses from core malloc functions and move it
into a new library libc_malloc_debug.so. With this, the hooks now no
longer have any effect on the core library.

libc_malloc_debug.so is a malloc interposer that needs to be preloaded
to get hooks functionality back so that the debugging features that
depend on the hooks, i.e. malloc-check, mcheck and mtrace work again.
Without the preloaded DSO these debugging features will be nops.
These features will be ported away from hooks in subsequent patches.

Similarly, legacy applications that need hooks functionality need to
preload libc_malloc_debug.so.

The symbols exported by libc_malloc_debug.so are maintained at exactly
the same version as libc.so.

Finally, static binaries will no longer be able to use malloc
debugging features since they cannot preload the debugging DSO.

26492c0a14 Annotate additional APIs with GCC attribute access.
This change continues the improvements to compile-time out of bounds
checking by decorating more APIs with either attribute access, or by
explicitly providing the array bound in APIs such as tmpnam() that

The only effects of the attribute and/or the array bound is to check

b1ccfc061f signal: Move sys_siglist to a compat symbol
The symbol was deprecated by strsignal and its usage imposes issues
such as copy relocations.

Its internal name is changed to __sys_siglist and __sys_sigabbrev to
avoid static linking usage. The compat code is also refactored, since
both Linux and Hurd usage the same strategy: export the same array with
different object sizes.

The libSegfault change avoids calling strsignal on the SIGFAULT signal
handler (the current usage is already sketchy, adding a call that
potentially issue locale internal function is even sketchier).

6caddd34bd Remove most vfprintf width/precision-dependent allocations (bug 14231, bug 26211).
The vfprintf implementation (used for all printf-family functions)
contains complicated logic to allocate internal buffers of a size
depending on the width and precision used for a format, using either
malloc or alloca depending on that size, and with consequent checks
for size overflow and allocation failure.

As noted in bug 26211, the version of that logic used when '$' plus
argument number formats are in use is missing the overflow checks,
which can result in segfaults (quite possibly exploitable, I didn't
try to work that out) when the width or precision is in the range
0x7fffffe0 through 0x7fffffff (maybe smaller values as well in the
wprintf case on 32-bit systems, when the multiplication by sizeof
(CHAR_T) can overflow).

All that complicated logic in fact appears to be useless. As far as I
can tell, there has been no need (outside the floating-point printf
code, which does its own allocations) for allocations depending on
width or precision since commit
3e95f6602b ("Remove limitation on size
of precision for integers", Sun Sep 12 21:23:32 1999 +0000). Thus,
this patch removes that logic completely, thereby fixing both problems
with excessive allocations for large width and precision for
non-floating-point formats, and the problem with missing overflow
checks with such allocations. Note that this does have the
consequence that width and precision up to INT_MAX are now allowed
where previously INT_MAX / sizeof (CHAR_T) - EXTSIZ or more would have
been rejected, so could potentially expose any other overflows where
the value would previously have been rejected by those removed checks.

I believe this completely fixes bugs 14231 and 26211.

Excessive allocations are still possible in the floating-point case
(bug 21127), as are other integer or buffer overflows (see bug 26201).
This does not address the cases where a precision larger than INT_MAX
(embedded in the format string) would be meaningful without printf's
return value overflowing (when it's used with a string format, or %g
without the '#' flag, so the actual output will be much smaller), as
mentioned in bug 17829 comment 8; using size_t internally for
precision to handle that case would be complicated by struct
printf_info being a public ABI. Nor does it address the matter of an
INT_MIN width being negated (bug 17829 comment 7; the same logic
appears a second time in the file as well, in the form of multiplying
by -1). There may be other sources of memory allocations with malloc
in printf functions as well (bug 24988, bug 16060). From inspection,
I think there are also integer overflows in two copies of "if ((width
-= len) < 0)" logic (where width is int, len is size_t and a very long
string could result in spurious padding being output on a 32-bit
system before printf overflows the count of output characters).

Tested for x86-64 and x86.

d0d1811fb9 Fix tests which expose ldbl -> _Float128 redirects
The ldbl redirects for ieee128 have some jagged edges when
inspecting and manipulating symbols directly.

e.g asprintf is unconditionally redirected to __asprintfieee128
thus any tests relying on GCC's redirect behavior will encounter
problems if they inspect the symbol names too closely.

I've mitigated tests which expose the limitations of the
ldbl -> f128 redirects by giving them knowledge about the
redirected symbol names.

Hopefully there isn't much user code which depends on this
implementation specific behavior.

following changes:

  - Use compiler overflow builtins on done_add_func function.
  - Define the scratch +utstring_converted_wide_string using
    CHAR_T.
  - Added a testcase and mention the bug report.

Both default and wide printf functions might leak memory when
manipulate multibyte characters conversion depending of the size
of the input (whether __libc_use_alloca trigger or not the fallback
heap allocation).

This patch fixes it by removing the extra memory allocation on
string formatting with conversion parts.

The testcase uses input argument size that trigger memory leaks
on unpatched code (using a scratch buffer the threashold to use
heap allocation is lower).

e4a3999213 Prepare redirections for IEEE long double on powerpc64le
All functions that have a format string, which can consume a long double
argument, must have one version for each long double format supported on
a platform. On powerpc64le, these functions currently have two versions
(i.e.: long double with the same format as double, and long double with
IBM Extended Precision format). Support for a third long double format
option (i.e. long double with IEEE long double format) is being prepared
and all the aforementioned functions now have a third version (not yet
exported on the master branch, but the code is in).

For these functions to get selected (during build time), references to
them in user programs (or dependent libraries) must get redirected to
the aforementioned new versions of the functions. This patch installs
the header magic required to perform such redirections.

Notice, however, that since the redirections only happen when
__LONG_DOUBLE_USES_FLOAT128 is set to 1, and no platform (including
powerpc64le) currently does it, no redirections actually happen.
Redirections and the exporting of the new functions will happen at the
same time (when powerpc64le adds ldbl-128ibm-compat to their Implies.

1626f499d1 Prepare vfprintf to use __printf_fp/__printf_fphex with float128 arg
On powerpc64le, long double can currently take two formats: the same as
double (-mlong-double-64) or IBM Extended Precision (default with
-mlong-double-128 or explicitly with -mabi=ibmlongdouble). The internal
implementation of printf-like functions is aware of these possibilities
and properly parses floating-point values from the variable arguments,
before making calls to __printf_fp and __printf_fphex. These functions
are also aware of the format possibilities and know how to convert both
formats to string.

When library support for TS 18661-3 was added to glibc, __printf_fp and
__printf_fphex were extended with support for an additional type
(__float128/_Float128) with a different format (binary128). Now that
powerpc64le is getting support for its third long double format, and
taking into account that this format is the same as the format of
__float128/_Float128, this patch extends __vfprintf_internal to properly
call __printf_fp and __printf_fphex with this new format.

Tested for powerpc64le (with additional patches to actually enable the
use of these preparations) and for x86_64.

34a5a1460e Break some lines before not after operators.
The GNU Coding Standards specify that line breaks in expressions
should go before an operator, not after one. This patch fixes various
code to do this. It only changes code that appears to be mostly
following GNU style anyway, not files and directories with
substantially different formatting. It is not exhaustive even for
files using GNU style (for example, changes to sysdeps files are
deferred for subsequent cleanups). Some files changed are shared with
gnulib, but most are specific to glibc. Changes were made manually,
with places to change found by grep (so some cases, e.g. where the
operator was followed by a comment at end of line, are particularly
liable to have been missed by grep, but I did include cases where the
operator was followed by backslash-newline).

This patch generally does not attempt to address other coding style
issues in the expressions changed (for example, missing spaces before
'(', or lack of parentheses to ensure indentation of continuation
lines properly reflects operator precedence).

Since the introduction of explicit flags in the internal implementation
of the printf family of functions, the 'mode' parameter can be used to

PRINTF_LDBL_IS_DBL). This patch uses this feature in the implementation

support for 'nldbl' and 'ieee128' versions of these functions.

that the former accepts the archaic GNU extension '%as' (also %aS and
%a[...]) meaning to allocate space for the input string with malloc.
This extension conflicts with C99's use of %a as a format _type_
meaning to read a floating-point number; POSIX.1-2008 standardized
equivalent functionality using the modifier letter 'm' instead (%ms,
%mS, %m[...]).

The extension was already disabled in most conformance modes:
specifically, any mode that doesn't involve _GNU_SOURCE and _does_
involve either strict conformance to C99 or loose conformance to both
C99 and POSIX.1-2001 would get the C99-compliant scanf. With
compilers new enough to use -std=gnu11 instead of -std=gnu89, or
equivalent, that includes the default mode.

With this patch, we now provide C99-compliant scanf in all
configurations except when _GNU_SOURCE is defined *and*
__STDC_VERSION__ or __cplusplus (whichever is relevant) indicates
C89/C++98. This leaves the old scanf available under e.g. -std=c89
-D_GNU_SOURCE, but removes it from e.g. -std=gnu11 -D_GNU_SOURCE (it
was already not present under -std=gnu11 without -D_GNU_SOURCE) and
from -std=gnu89 without -D_GNU_SOURCE.

There needs to be an internal override so we can compile the
noncompliant scanf itself. This is the same problem we had when we
removed 'gets' from _GNU_SOURCE and it's dealt with the same way:
there's a new __GLIBC_USE symbol, DEPRECATED_SCANF, which defaults to
off under the appropriate conditions for external code, but can be
overridden by individual files within stdio.

We also run into problems with PLT bypass for internal uses of sscanf,
because libc_hidden_proto uses __REDIRECT and so does the logic in
stdio.h for choosing which implementation of scanf to use; __REDIRECT
isn't transitive, so include/stdio.h needs to bridge the gap with a
macro. As far as I can tell, sscanf is the only function in this
family that's internally called by unrelated code.

Finally, there are several tests in stdio-common that use the
extension. bug21.c is a regression test for a crash; it still
exercises the relevant code when changed to use %ms instead of %as.
scanf14.c through scanf17.c are more complicated since they are
actually testing the subtleties of the extension - under what
circumstances is 'a' treated as a modifier letter, etc. I changed all
of them to use %ms instead of %as as well, but duplicated scanf14.c
and scanf16.c as scanf14a.c and scanf16a.c. These still use %as and
are compiled with -std=gnu89 to access the old extension. A bunch of
diagnostic overrides and manual workarounds for the old stdio.h
behavior become unnecessary.  Yay!

10446f5d9f Prepare vfscanf to use __strtof128_internal
On powerpc64le, long double can currently take two formats: the same as
double (-mlong-double-64) or IBM Extended Precision (default with
-mlong-double-128 or explicitly with -mabi=ibmlongdouble). The internal
implementation of scanf-like functions is aware of these possibilites
and, based on the format in use, properly calls __strtold_internal or
__strtod_internal, saving the return to a variable of type double or
long double.

When library support for TS 18661-3 was added to glibc, a new function,
__strtof128_internal, was added to enable reading of floating-point
values with IEEE binary128 format into the _Float128 type. Now that
powerpc64le is getting support for its third long double format, and
taking into account that this format is the same as the format of
_Float128, this patch extends __vfscanf_internal and __vfwscanf_internal
to call __strtof128_internal or __wcstof128_internal when appropriate.
The result gets saved into a variable of _Float128 type.

Tested for powerpc64le.

After all that prep work, nldbl-compat.c can now use PRINTF_LDBL_IS_DBL

can go away entirely.

4e2f43f842 Use PRINTF_FORTIFY instead of _IO_FLAGS2_FORTIFY (bug 11319)
The _chk variants of all of the printf functions become much simpler.
This is the last thing that we needed _IO_acquire_lock_clear_flags2
for, so it can go as well. I took the opportunity to make the headers
included and the names of all local variables consistent across all the
affected files.

Since we ultimately want to get rid of __no_long_double as well, it
must be possible to get all of the nontrivial effects of the _chk
functions by calling the _internal functions with appropriate flags.
For most of the __(v)xprintf_chk functions, this is covered by
PRINTF_FORTIFY plus some up-front argument checks that can be
duplicated. However, __(v)sprintf_chk installs a custom jump table so
that it can crash instead of overflowing the output buffer. This
functionality is moved to __vsprintf_internal, which now has a
'maxlen' argument like __vsnprintf_internal; to get the unsafe
behavior of ordinary (v)sprintf, pass -1 for that argument.

obstack_printf_chk and obstack_vprintf_chk are no longer in the same
file.

As a side-effect of the unification of both fortified and non-fortified
vdprintf initialization, this patch fixes bug 11319 for __dprintf_chk
and __vdprintf_chk, which was previously fixed only for dprintf and
vdprintf by the commit

698fb75b9f Add __v*printf_internal with flags arguments
There are a lot more printf variants than there are scanf variants,
and the code for setting up and tearing down their custom FILE
variants around the call to __vf(w)printf is more complicated and
variable. Therefore, I have added _internal versions of all the
v*printf variants, rather than introducing helper routines so that
they can all directly call __vf(w)printf_internal, as was done with
scanf.

As with the scanf changes, in this patch the _internal functions still
look at the environmental mode bits and all callers pass 0 for the
flags parameter.

Several of the affected public functions had _IO_ name aliases that
were not exported (but, in one case, appeared in libio.h anyway);
I was originally planning to leave them as aliases to avoid having
to touch internal callers, but it turns out ldbl_*_alias only work
for exported symbols, so they've all been removed instead. It also
turns out there were hardly any internal callers. _IO_vsprintf and
_IO_vfprintf *are* exported, so those two stick around.

Summary for the changes to each of the affected symbols:

  _IO_vfprintf, _IO_vsprintf:
    All internal calls removed, thus the internal declarations, as well
    as uses of libc_hidden_proto and libc_hidden_def, were also removed.
    The external symbol is now exposed via uses of ldbl_strong_alias
    to __vfprintf_internal and __vsprintf_internal, respectively.

  _IO_vasprintf, _IO_vdprintf, _IO_vsnprintf,
  _IO_vfwprintf, _IO_vswprintf,
  _IO_obstack_vprintf, _IO_obstack_printf:
    All internal calls removed, thus declaration in internal headers
    were also removed. They were never exported, so there are no
    aliases tying them to the internal functions. I.e.: entirely gone.

  __vsnprintf:
    Internal calls were always preceded by macros such as
      #define __vsnprintf _IO_vsnprintf, and
      #define __vsnprintf vsnprintf
    The macros were removed and their uses replaced with calls to the
    new internal function __vsnprintf_internal. Since there were no
    internal calls, the internal declaration was also removed. The
    external symbol is preserved with ldbl_weak_alias to ___vsnprintf.

  __vfwprintf:
    All internal calls converted into calls to __vfwprintf_internal,
    thus the internal declaration was removed. The function is now a
    wrapper that calls __vfwprintf_internal. The external symbol is
    preserved.

  __vswprintf:
    Similarly, but no external symbol.

  __vasprintf, __vdprintf, __vfprintf, __vsprintf:
    New internal wrappers.  Not exported.

  vasprintf, vdprintf, vfprintf, vsprintf, vsnprintf,
  vfwprintf, vswprintf,
  obstack_vprintf, obstack_printf:
    These functions used to be aliases to the respective _IO_* function,
    they are now aliases to their respective __* functions.

349718d4d7 Add __vfscanf_internal and __vfwscanf_internal with flags arguments.
There are two flags currently defined: SCANF_LDBL_IS_DBL is the mode
used by __nldbl_ scanf variants, and SCANF_ISOC99_A is the mode used
by __isoc99_ scanf variants. In this patch, the new functions honor
these flag bits if they're set, but they still also look at the
corresponding bits of environmental state, and callers all pass zero.

The new functions do *not* have the "errp" argument possessed by
_IO_vfscanf and _IO_vfwscanf. All internal callers passed NULL for
that argument. External callers could theoretically exist, so I
preserved wrappers, but they are flagged as compat symbols and they
don't preserve the three-way distinction among types of errors that
was formerly exposed. These functions probably should have been in
the list of deprecated _IO_ symbols in 2.27 NEWS -- they're not just
aliases for vfscanf and vfwscanf.

(It was necessary to introduce ldbl_compat_symbol for _IO_vfscanf.
Please check that part of the patch very carefully, I am still not
confident I understand all of the details of ldbl-opt.)

This patch also introduces helper inlines in libio/strfile.h that
encapsulate the process of initializing an _IO_strfile object for
reading. This allows us to call __vfscanf_internal directly from
sscanf, and __vfwscanf_internal directly from swscanf, without
duplicating the initialization code. (Previously, they called their
v-counterparts, but that won't work if we want to control *both* C99
mode and ldbl-is-dbl mode using the flags argument to__vfscanf_internal.)
It's still a little awkward, especially for wide strfiles, but it's
much better than what we had.

Various glibc testcases use tmpnam in ways subject to race conditions
(generate a temporary file name, then later open that file without

This patch fixes those tests to use mkstemp - generally a minimal

b7b88cea41 ldbl-128ibm-compat: Add printf_size
Since the addition of the _Float128 API, strfromf128 and printf_size use
__printf_fp to print _Float128 values. This is achieved by setting the
'is_binary128' member of the 'printf_info' structure to one. Now that
the format of long double on powerpc64le is getting a third option, this
mechanism is reused for long double values that have binary128 format
(i.e.: when -mabi=ieeelongdouble).

This patch adds __printf_sizeieee128 as an exported symbol, but doesn't
provide redirections from printf_size, yet. All redirections will be
installed in a future commit, once all other functions that print or
read long double values with binary128 format are ready. In
__printf_fp, when 'is_binary128' is one, the floating-point argument is
treated as if it was of _Float128 type, regardless of the value of
'is_long_double', thus __printf_sizeieee128 sets 'is_binary128' to the
same value of 'is_long_double'. Otherwise, double values would not be
printed correctly.

27f10a0963 Fix hardcoded /tmp paths in testing (bug 13888).
As noted in bug 13888, and as I noted previously in
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2000-10/msg00111.html>, various
tests used hardcoded paths in /tmp, so posing issues for simultaneous
test runs from different build directories.

This patch fixes such uses of hardcoded file names to put them in the
build directory instead (in the case of stdio-common/bug5 the file
names are changed as well, to avoid a conflict with the name bug5.out
also used for the automatic test output redirection). It also fixes
test-installation.pl likewise (that was using filenames with $$ in
them rather than strictly hardcoded names, but that's still not good
practice for temporary file naming).

Note that my list of files changed is not identical to that in bug
13888.  I added tst-spawn3.c and test-installation.pl, and removed
some tests that seem to me (now) to create temporary files securely
(simply using /tmp is not itself a problem if the temporary files are
handled properly with mkstemp; I haven't checked whether those tests
used to do things insecurely). conformtest is not changed because the
makefiles always pass a --tmpdir option so the /tmp default is
irrelevant, and for the same reason there is no actual problem with
nptl/tst-umask1.c because again the makefiles always override the
default.

nptl/sockperf.c is ignored because there is no code to run it;
probably that file should actually be removed.

Some tests use the mktemp function, but I think they all use it in a
way that *is* secure (for generating names for directories / sockets /
fifos / symlinks, where the operation using the name will not follow
symlinks and so there is no potential for a symlink attack on the
account running the testsuite).

Some tests use the tmpnam function to generate temporary file names.
This is in principle insecure, but not addressed by this patch (I
consider it a separate issue from the fully hardcoded paths).

646c2833ee Fix scanf rounding of negative floating-point numbers (bug 23280).
As reported in bug 23280, scanf functions produce incorrectly rounded
result for floating-point formats in FE_UPWARD and FE_DOWNWARD modes,
because they pass the input with sign removed to strtod functions, and
then negate the result if there was a '-' at the start of the input.

This patch fixes this by arranging for the sign to be passed to strtod
rather than scanf doing the negation itself. In turn, keeping the
sign around in the buffer being built up for strtod requires updating
places that examine char_buffer_size (&charbuf) to allow for the sign
being there as an extra character.

df6c012b99 Remove _IO_file_flags define.
This entirely mechanical (except for some indentation fixups) patch
replaces all uses of _IO_file_flags with _flags and removes the #define.

Installed stripped libraries and executables are unchanged by this patch.

	* libio/libio.h (_IO_file_flags): Remove macro.
	All uses changed to _flags.

9964a14579 Mechanically remove _IO_ name aliases for types and constants.
This patch mechanically removes all remaining uses, and the
definitions, of the following libio name aliases:

 name                         replaced with
 ----                         -------------
 _IO_FILE                     FILE
 _IO_fpos_t                   __fpos_t
 _IO_fpos64_t                 __fpos64_t
 _IO_size_t                   size_t
 _IO_ssize_t                  ssize_t or __ssize_t
 _IO_off_t                    off_t
 _IO_off64_t                  off64_t
 _IO_pid_t                    pid_t
 _IO_uid_t                    uid_t
 _IO_wint_t                   wint_t
 _IO_va_list                  va_list or __gnuc_va_list
 _IO_BUFSIZ                   BUFSIZ
 _IO_cookie_io_functions_t    cookie_io_functions_t
 __io_read_fn                 cookie_read_function_t
 __io_write_fn                cookie_write_function_t
 __io_seek_fn                 cookie_seek_function_t
 __io_close_fn                cookie_close_function_t

I used __fpos_t and __fpos64_t instead of fpos_t and fpos64_t because
the definitions of fpos_t and fpos64_t depend on the largefile mode.
I used __ssize_t and __gnuc_va_list in a handful of headers where
namespace cleanliness might be relevant even though they're
internal-use-only. In all other cases, I used the public-namespace
name.

There are a tiny handful of places where I left a use of 'struct _IO_FILE'
alone, because it was being used together with 'struct _IO_FILE_plus'
or 'struct _IO_FILE_complete' in the same arithmetic expression.

Because this patch was almost entirely done with search and replace, I
may have introduced indentation botches. I did proofread the diff,
but I may have missed something.

The ChangeLog below calls out all of the places where this was not a
pure search-and-replace change.

Installed stripped libraries and executables are unchanged by this patch,
except that some assertions in vfscanf.c change line numbers.

48a8f83281 Deprecate external use of libio.h and _G_config.h.
libio.h was originally the header for a set of supported GNU
extensions, but they have not been maintained as such in many years,
they are now standing in the way of improvements to stdio, and we
don't think there are any remaining external users. _G_config.h was
never intended for public use, but predates the bits convention.
Move both of these headers into the bits directory and provide stubs
at top level which issue deprecation warnings.

The contents of (bits/)libio.h and (bits/)_G_config.h are still
exposed to external software via stdio.h; changing that requires more
complex surgery than I have time to attempt right now.

	* libio/libio.h, libio/_G_config.h: New stub headers which issue a
	deprecation warning and then include <bits/libio.h>, <bits/_G_config.h>
	respectively.
	* libio/libio.h: Rename the original version of this file to
	libio/bits/libio.h. Error out if not included by stdio.h or the
	stub libio.h.
	* include/libio.h: Move to include/bits.  Forward to libio/bits/libio.h.
	* sysdeps/generic/_G_config.h: Move to top-level bits/.  Error out
	if not included by bits/libio.h or the stub _G_config.h.
	* sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/_G_config.h: Move to
	sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/bits. Error out if not included by
	bits/libio.h or the stub _G_config.h.
	* libio/stdio.h: Include bits/libio.h, not libio.h.
	* libio/Makefile: Install bits/libio.h and bits/_G_config.h as
	well as libio.h and _G_config.h.

	* csu/init.c, libio/fmemopen.c, libio/iolibio.h, libio/oldfmemopen.c
	* libio/strfile.h, stdio-common/vfscanf.c
	* sysdeps/pthread/flockfile.c, sysdeps/pthread/funlockfile.c
	Include stdio.h, not _G_config.h nor libio.h.
	* libio/iofgetpos.c: Also rename fgetpos64 out of the way.
	* libio/iofsetpos.c: Also rename fsetpos64 out of the way.

	* scripts/check-installed-headers.sh: Skip libio.h and _G_config.h.

8b1647877c Remove __long_double_t.
sys/cdefs.h has a macro __long_double_t used in two places in glibc.
long double is a standard part of C since C89; there is no need for
such an alias for it. This patch removes that macro and uses long
double directly everywhere. As an implementation-namespace,
undocumented symbol, it should not be considered part of the API for
users, and codesearch.debian.net shows no sign of it being used
outside glibc in a way that would break with this patch.

Tested for x86_64.

	* misc/sys/cdefs.h (__long_double_t): Remove.
	* stdio-common/printf_fp.c (__printf_fp_l): Use long double
	instead of __long_double_t,
	* stdlib/strfmon_l.c (__vstrfmon_l): Likewise.

af85385f31 Use locale_t, not __locale_t, throughout glibc
<locale.h> is specified to define locale_t in POSIX.1-2008, and so are
all of the headers that define functions that take locale_t arguments.
Under _GNU_SOURCE, the additional headers that define such functions
have also always defined locale_t. Therefore, there is no need to use
__locale_t in public function prototypes, nor in any internal code.

37f802f864 Remove __need_IOV_MAX and __need_FOPEN_MAX.
__need_FOPEN_MAX wasn't being used anywhere. __need_IOV_MAX was more
complicated; the basic deal is that sys/uio.h wants to define a
constant named UIO_MAXIOV and bits/xopen_lim.h wants to define a
constant named IOV_MAX, with the same meaning. For no apparent reason
this was being handled via bits/stdio_lim.h -- stdio.h is NOT supposed
to define IOV_MAX -- and some mess in Makerules. Also, bits/uio.h on
Linux was being used as a dumping ground for extension functions.

So now we have bits/uio_lim.h, which defines __IOV_MAX.
bits/xopen_lim.h and sys/uio.h use that to define their respective
constants. We also now have bits/uio-ext.h, which is the official
Proper Home for extensions to sys/uio.h. bits/uio.h is removed, and
stdio_lim.h doesn't define IOV_MAX at all.

	* bits/uio_lim.h, sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/bits/uio_lim.h
	* bits/uio-ext.h, sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/bits/uio-ext.h: New file.

	bits/types/struct_iovec.h and bits/uio_lim.h.  Set UIO_MAXIOV
	based on __IOV_MAX. Under __USE_GNU, also include bits/uio-ext.h.

	* stdio-common/stdio_lim.h.in: Remove logic for __need_FOPEN_MAX
	and __need_IOV_MAX.  Don't define IOV_MAX at all.
	* Makerules (stdio_lim.h): Remove logic for setting IOV_MAX.

	* sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/bits/fcntl-linux.h:
	Include bits/types/struct_iovec.h, not bits/uio.h.

aab0f374e7 Remove duplicated code from __printf_fp_l, __printf_fphex, and __printf_size
In __printf_fp_l, __printf_fphex, and __printf_size the blocks of code that are
used to read a double or long double argument, check for special values and
convert to multiprecision are similar. When adding float128 support to libc,
more code would be duplicated to deal with the extra type. This patch moves
the repetitive code to a macro which is now used by double and long double and
will be used for float128 when support is added, thus avoiding more
duplication.

Tested for powerpc64le and s390x.

544ce845de getopt: clean up error reporting
getopt can print a whole bunch of error messages, and when used
standalone (from gnulib) it uses fprintf to do that. But fprintf is a
cancellation point and getopt isn't, and also applying fprintf to a
stream in wide-character mode is not allowed.

glibc has an internal function called __fxprintf that writes a narrow
format string to a stream regardless of mode, but it only handles
ASCII format strings, and it's still a cancellation point. getopt's
messages are translated, so they might not be ASCII. So getopt has an
error message to an asprintf buffer, monkeys with internal flag bits
on stderr to disable cancellation, and then calls
__fxprintf(stderr, "%s", buffer).  There isn't even a helper function,
the code is duplicated every time.

This patch fixes __fxprintf to handle arbitrary multibyte format
strings, and adds a variant __fxprintf_nocancel that does the same
thing but also isn't a cancellation point. (It still _works_ by
monkeying with internal flag bits on the FILE, but that's not really a
layering violation for code in stdio-common.) All of the #ifdef _LIBC
blocks can then be reduced to their standalone versions with a little
help from some macros at the top of the file.

I also wrote a test case to verify that getopt really isn't a
cancellation point, and I'm glad I did, because it found two bugs, one
of which wasn't even to do with cancellation (see previous patch).

	* stdio-common/fxprintf.c (__fxprintf_nocancel): New function.
	(locked_vfxprintf): New helper function. Handle arbitrary
	multibyte strings, not just ASCII.
	* include/stdio.h: Declare __fxprintf_nocancel.

	* posix/getopt.c: When _LIBC is defined, define fprintf to
	__fxprintf_nocancel, flockfile to _IO_flockfile, and
	funlockfile to _IO_funlockfile. When neither _LIBC nor
	_POSIX_THREAD_SAFE_FUNCTIONS is defined, define flockfile and
	funlockfile as no-ops. (_getopt_internal_r): Remove all
	internal #ifdef _LIBC blocks; the standalone error-printing
	code can now be used for libc as well. Add an
	flockfile/funlockfile pair around one case where the error
	message is printed in several chunks. Don't use fputc.

	* posix/tst-getopt-cancel.c: New test.
	* posix/Makefile: Run it.

9090848d06 Narrowing the visibility of libc-internal.h even further.
posix/wordexp-test.c used libc-internal.h for PTR_ALIGN_DOWN; similar
to what was done with libc-diag.h, I have split the definitions of
cast_to_integer, ALIGN_UP, ALIGN_DOWN, PTR_ALIGN_UP, and PTR_ALIGN_DOWN
to a new header, libc-pointer-arith.h.

It then occurred to me that the remaining declarations in libc-internal.h
are mostly to do with early initialization, and probably most of the
files including it, even in the core code, don't need it anymore. Indeed,
only 19 files actually need what remains of libc-internal.h. 23 others
need libc-diag.h instead, and 12 need libc-pointer-arith.h instead.
No file needs more than one of them, and 16 don't need any of them!

So, with this patch, libc-internal.h stops including libc-diag.h as
well as losing the pointer arithmetic macros, and all including files
are adjusted.

7caa5054af Clean up conditionals for declaration of gets.
gets has the dubious honor of being the only C89 library feature that
has been completely removed from the current C and C++ standards.
glibc follows suit by not declaring it in _GNU_SOURCE mode either,
but it remains present in older compatibility modes. Internally,
two test cases need to see stdio.h make the declaration, but all our
internal code is of course compiled under _GNU_SOURCE. This is currently
kludged by duplicating the gets declaration, fortify wrapper and all,
in include/stdio.h. Also, the conditional in the public headers for
deciding when to declare gets is complicated and repeated in two places.

This patch adds a new macro to features.h that encapsulates the
complicated rule for when to declare gets. stdio.h and bits/stdio2.h
then simply test __GLIBC_USE (DEPRECATED_GETS), and instead of having
a duplicate gets declaration in include/stdio.h, debug/tst-chk1.c and
stdio-common/tst-gets.c can force gets to be declared.

        * include/features.h (__GLIBC_USE_DEPRECATED_GETS): New macro.

db3476aff1 libio: Implement vtable verification [BZ #20191]
This commit puts all libio vtables in a dedicated, read-only ELF
section, so that they are consecutive in memory. Before any indirect
jump, the vtable pointer is checked against the section boundaries,
and the process is terminated if the vtable pointer does not fall into
the special ELF section.

To enable backwards compatibility, a special flag variable
(_IO_accept_foreign_vtables), protected by the pointer guard, avoids
process termination if libio stream object constructor functions have
been called earlier. Such constructor functions are called by the GCC
2.95 libstdc++ library, and this mechanism ensures compatibility with
old binaries. Existing callers inside glibc of these functions are
adjusted to call the original functions, not the wrappers which enable
vtable compatiblity.

The compatibility mechanism is used to enable passing FILE * objects
across a static dlopen boundary, too.

This is due both how read and write operation update the buffer position,
taking in consideration buffer lenght instead of maximum position defined
by the open mode. This patch fixes it and also fixes fseek not returning
EINVAL for invalid whence modes.

Tested on x86_64 and i686.

	[BZ #20012]
	* libio/fmemopen.c (fmemopen_read): Use buffer maximum position, not
	length to calculate the buffer to read.
	(fmemopen_write): Set the buffer position based on bytes written.
	(fmemopen_seek): Return EINVAL for invalid whence modes.

f9123b5003 libio: Update internal fmemopen position after write (BZ #20005)
Current GLIBC fmemopen fails with a simple testcase:

  char buffer[500] = "x";
  FILE *stream;
  stream = fmemopen(buffer, 500, "r+");
  fwrite("fish",sizeof(char),5,stream);
  printf("pos-1:%ld\n",ftell(stream));
  fflush(stream);
  printf("pos-2:%ld\n",ftell(stream));

It returns:

  pos-1:5
  pos-2:0

Where it should return:

  pos-1:5
  pos-2:5

This is due the internal write function does not correctly update the internal
object position state and then the seek operation returns a wrong value. This
patch fixes it.

It fixes both BZ #20005 and BZ #19230 (marked as duplicated). A new test is
added to check for such case.

Tested on x86_64 and i686.

	* libio/fmemopen.c (fmemopen_write): Update internal position after
	write.
	* stdio-common/Makefile (tests): Add tst-fmemopen4.c.
	* stdio-common/tst-fmemopen4.c: New file..

b1b8f5d89d Fix strfmon_l: Use specified locale for number formatting [BZ #19633]
The commit 985fc132f2
"strfmon_l: Use specified locale for number formatting [BZ #19633]"
introduced an elf/check-abi-libc testfailure due to __printf_fp_l
on architectures which use sysdeps/ieee754/ldbl-opt/math_ldbl_opt.h.

This patch uses libc_hidden_def instead of ldbl_hidden_def.
The ldbl_strong_alias is removed due to the rename of ___printf_fp_l
to __printf_fp_l.

ChangeLog:

	* stdio-common/printf_fp.c (__printf_fp_l):
	Rename ___printf_fp_l to __printf_fp_l and
	remove strong alias. Use libc_hidden_def instead
	of ldbl_hidden_def macro.

37a4c70bd4 Increase internal precision of ldbl-128ibm decimal printf [BZ #19853]
When the signs differ, the precision of the conversion sometimes
drops below 106 bits. This strategy is identical to the
hexadecimal variant.

I've refactored tst-sprintf3 to enable testing a value with more
than 30 significant digits in order to demonstrate this failure
and its solution.

Additionally, this implicitly fixes a typo in the shift
quantities when subtracting from the high mantissa to compute
the difference.

9d46370ca3 Convert 703 function definitions to prototype style.
This automatically-generated patch converts 703 function definitions
in glibc from old-style K&R to prototype-style.

This conversion is deliberately simplistic, excluding any tricky cases
as even a patch covering only simple cases is still very large.
Currently excluded are: sysdeps files (to improve test coverage for
the initial patch); files containing assertions (to avoid line number
changes so that generated libraries can be compared); any cases where
the generated function declaration would involve lines over 79
characters and so need to be wrapped; any cases with array parameters
or other cases where parameter declarators don't end with the
parameter name; any other cases that my script didn't parse.

I didn't try to make the ChangeLog generation indicate when function
definitions are conditional; it just lists the functions changed
without regard to that.

Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite, and that installed stripped
shared libraries are unchanged by the patch).

56ab386964 Remove -fexceptions configure test.
There is a configure test for -fexceptions. This option was added in
GCC 2.8, so the test is obsolete - and indeed plenty of code is using
-fexceptions directly. This patch removes the configure test and
makes all uses of $(exceptions) use -fexceptions directly.

95e8397481 vfscanf: Use struct scratch_buffer instead of extend_alloca
A custom character buffer is added in this commit, in the form of
struct char_buffer. The char_buffer_add function replaces the
ADDW macro (which has grown with each successive security fix).
The char_buffer_add slow path is moved out-of-line, reducing
code size.

	* stdio-common/vfscanf.c (MEMCPY): Remove macro.
	(struct char_buffer): New type.
	(char_buffer_start, char_buffer_size, char_buffer_error)
	(char_buffer_rewind, char_buffer_add): New functions.
	(ADDW): Remove macro, replaced by the char_buffer_add function.
	(_IO_vfscanf_internal): Rewrite using struct char_buffer instead
	of extend_alloca. Make control flow more explicit.

ec999b8e5e Move bits/libc-lock.h and bits/libc-lockP.h out of bits/ (bug 14912).
It was noted in
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2012-09/msg00305.html> that the
bits/*.h naming scheme should only be used for installed headers.
This patch renames bits/libc-lock.h to plain libc-lock.h and
bits/libc-lockP.h to plain libc-lockP.h to follow that convention.

Note that I don't know where libc-lockP.h comes from for Hurd (the
Hurd libc-lock.h includes libc-lockP.h, but the only libc-lockP.h in
the glibc source tree is for NPTL) - some unmerged patch? - but I
updated the #include in the Hurd libc-lock.h anyway.

Tested for x86_64 (testsuite, and that installed stripped shared
libraries are unchanged by the patch).

acf0cb6f24 Don't include <bits/stdio-lock.h> from installed <libio.h>.
Every so often someone gets confused by the fact that the installed
<bits/stdio-lock.h> header includes the non-installed <lowlevellock.h>
header.

This inclusion is not in fact a bug, because <bits/stdio-lock.h> only
gets included by any header that users should include directly if
_IO_MTSAFE_IO is defined, and that's an internal define used when
building libio, not a feature test macro it's valid for users to
define. However, on general principles it's best to have as little as
possible in the installed headers that is inapplicable for valid uses
of the installed glibc.

This patch moves the include of <bits/stdio-lock.h> to the internal
header include/libio.h, so that even if someone defines _IO_MTSAFE_IO
it won't get included. This is intended as preparation for stopping
<bits/stdio-lock.h> and <bits/libc-lock.h> from being installed at all
(after this patch they aren't used in any installed header; formally
of course they don't need to be installed even before this patch, but
stopping them being installed before removing the #include would just
exacerbate the confusion described above), and then moving those out
of the bits/ namespace in accordance with the principle that that
namespace is only for installed headers.

The tests scanf15.c and scanf17.c avoid the internal headers; after
this patch that means they need to undefine _IO_MTSAFE_IO as well as
_LIBC so as to get a working _IO_lock_t definition for libio.h. This
brings them closer to using the headers as an installed program would,
which clearly accords with the intent of those tests.

Tested for x86_64 (testsuite, and that installed stripped shared
libraries are unchanged by the patch).

ccfa271f8b libio: Update tst-fmemopen2.c
This patch updates tst-fmemopen2 to check for fmemopen with NULL buffer
inputs and also refactor the code a bit.

The test relies on a POSIX compliant fmemopen implementation.

	* stdio-common/tst-fmemopen2.c (do_test): Add test for NULL and zero
	length buffers.
	* stdio-common/tst-fmemopen.c (do_test): Refactor to use
	test-skeleton.c.

fdb7d390dd libio: fmemopen rewrite to POSIX compliance
This patch added a new fmemopen version, for glibc 2.22, that aims to be
POSIX complaint. It fixes some long-stading glibc fmemopen issues, such
as:

* it changes the way fseek with SEEK_END works on fmemopen to seek
  relative to buffer size instead of first '\0'. This is default mode and
  'b' opening mode does not change internal behavior (bz#6544).

* fix apending opening mode to use as start position either first null
  byte of len specified in function call (bz#13152 and #13151).

* remove binary option 'b' and internal different handling (bz#12836)

* fix seek/SEE_END with negative values (bz#14292).

A compatibility symbol is provided to with old behavior for older symbols
version (2.2.5).

	* include/stdio.h (fmemopen): Remove hidden prototype.
	(__fmemopen): Add new hidden prototype.
	* libio/Makefile: Add oldfmemopen object.

be7dc2b77e Fix syslog dprintf namespace (bug 18534).
syslog functions bring in references to dprintf, which wasn't added to
POSIX until the 2008 edition and so isn't in various standards
containing the syslog functions. This patch fixes this by making
dprintf into a weak alias of __dprintf and using __dprintf as
appropriate.

Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite, and that installed stripped
shared libraries are unchanged by the patch).

	[BZ #18534]
	* stdio-common/dprintf.c (__dprintf): Use libc_hidden_def.
	(dprintf): Define as a weak alias of __dprintf, not a strong
	alias.
	* include/stdio.h (__dprintf): Declare.  Use libc_hidden_proto.
	* misc/syslog.c (__vsyslog_chk): Call __dprintf instead of
	dprintf.
	* conform/Makefile (test-xfail-XPG4/syslog.h/linknamespace):
	Remove variable.
	(test-xfail-UNIX98/syslog.h/linknamespace): Likewise.
	(test-xfail-XOPEN2K/syslog.h/linknamespace): Likewise.
