2a99e2398d Use a doubly-linked list for _IO_list_all (bug 27777)
This patch fixes BZ #27777 "fclose does a linear search, takes ages when
many FILE* are opened". Simply put, the master list of opened (FILE*),
namely _IO_list_all, is a singly-linked list. As a consequence, the
removal of a single element is in O(N), which cripples the performance
of fclose(). The patch switches to a doubly-linked list, yielding O(1)
removal. The one padding field in struct _IO_FILE, __pad5, is renamed
to _prevchain for a doubly-linked list. Since fields in struct _IO_FILE
after the _lock field are internal to glibc and opaque to applications.
We can change them as long as the size of struct _IO_FILE is unchanged,
which is checked as the part of glibc ABI with sizes of _IO_2_1_stdin_,
_IO_2_1_stdout_ and _IO_2_1_stderr_.

NB: When _IO_vtable_offset (fp) == 0, copy relocation will cover the
whole struct _IO_FILE. Otherwise, only fields up to the _lock field
will be copied to applications at run-time. It is used to check if
the _prevchain field can be safely accessed.

After opening 2 million (FILE*), the fclose() of 100 of them takes quite
a few seconds without the patch, and under 2 seconds with it on a loaded
machine.

No test is added since there are no functional changes.

af130d2709 Always do locking when accessing streams (bug 15142, bug 14697)
Now that abort no longer calls fflush there is no reason to avoid locking
the stdio streams anywhere. This fixes a conformance issue and potential
heap corruption during exit.

88677348b4 Move libc_freeres_ptrs and libc_subfreeres to hidden/weak functions
They are both used by __libc_freeres to free all library malloc
allocated resources to help tooling like mtrace or valgrind with
memory leak tracking.

The current scheme uses assembly markers and linker script entries
to consolidate the free routine function pointers in the RELRO segment
and to be freed buffers in BSS.

This patch changes it to use specific free functions for
libc_freeres_ptrs buffers and call the function pointer array directly
with call_function_static_weak.

It allows the removal of both the internal macros and the linker
script sections.

Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu, i686-linux-gnu, and aarch64-linux-gnu.

21cc130b78 libio: do not attempt to free wide buffers of legacy streams [BZ #24228]
Commit a601b74d31 aka glibc-2.23~693
("In preparation for fixing BZ#16734, fix failure in misc/tst-error1-mem
when _G_HAVE_MMAP is turned off.") introduced a regression:
_IO_unbuffer_all now invokes _IO_wsetb to free wide buffers of all
files, including legacy standard files which are small statically
allocated objects that do not have wide buffers and the _mode member,
causing memory corruption.

Another memory corruption in _IO_unbuffer_all happens when -1
is assigned to the _mode member of legacy standard files that
do not have it.

30bfee2630 Remove miscellaneous debris from libio.
This patch eliminates a number of #if 0 and #ifdef TODO blocks, macros
that are never used, macros that provide portability to substrates that
lack basic things like EINVAL and off_t, and other such debris.

I preserved IO_DEBUG and CHECK_FILE, even though as far as I can tell
IO_DEBUG is never defined and therefore CHECK_FILE never does
anything, because it seems like we might actually want to turn it _on_.

Installed stripped libraries and executables are unchanged, except,
again, that the line number of an assertion changes (this time it's
somewhere in fileops.c).

	* libio/libio.h (_IO_pos_BAD, _IO_pos_0, _IO_pos_adjust):
	Define here, unconditionally.
	* libio/iolibio.h (_IO_pos_BAD): Don't define here.
	* libio/libioP.h: Remove #if 0 blocks.

	(_IO_va_start, COERCE_FILE, MAYBE_SET_EINVAL): Don't define.
	(CHECK_FILE): Don't use MAYBE_SET_EINVAL or COERCE_FILE. Fix style.

	* libio/clearerr.c, libio/fputc.c, libio/getchar.c:

	* libio/iofdopen.c, libio/iogetdelim.c, libio/oldiofdopen.c
Use __set_errno (EINVAL) instead of MAYBE_SET_EINVAL.

9964a14579 Mechanically remove _IO_ name aliases for types and constants.
This patch mechanically removes all remaining uses, and the
definitions, of the following libio name aliases:

 name replaced with
 ---- -------------
 _IO_FILE FILE
 _IO_fpos_t __fpos_t
 _IO_fpos64_t __fpos64_t
 _IO_size_t size_t
 _IO_ssize_t ssize_t or __ssize_t
 _IO_off_t off_t
 _IO_off64_t off64_t
 _IO_pid_t pid_t
 _IO_uid_t uid_t
 _IO_wint_t wint_t
 _IO_va_list va_list or __gnuc_va_list
 _IO_BUFSIZ BUFSIZ
 _IO_cookie_io_functions_t cookie_io_functions_t
 __io_read_fn cookie_read_function_t
 __io_write_fn cookie_write_function_t
 __io_seek_fn cookie_seek_function_t
 __io_close_fn cookie_close_function_t

I used __fpos_t and __fpos64_t instead of fpos_t and fpos64_t because
the definitions of fpos_t and fpos64_t depend on the largefile mode.
I used __ssize_t and __gnuc_va_list in a handful of headers where
namespace cleanliness might be relevant even though they're
internal-use-only. In all other cases, I used the public-namespace
name.

There are a tiny handful of places where I left a use of 'struct _IO_FILE'
alone, because it was being used together with 'struct _IO_FILE_plus'
or 'struct _IO_FILE_complete' in the same arithmetic expression.

Because this patch was almost entirely done with search and replace, I
may have introduced indentation botches. I did proofread the diff,
but I may have missed something.

The ChangeLog below calls out all of the places where this was not a
pure search-and-replace change.

Installed stripped libraries and executables are unchanged by this patch,
except that some assertions in vfscanf.c change line numbers.

d2e0491883 Single threaded stdio optimization
Locking overhead can be significant in some stdio operations
that are common in single threaded applications.

This patch adds the _IO_FLAGS2_NEED_LOCK flag to indicate if
an _IO_FILE object needs to be locked and some of the stdio
functions just jump to their _unlocked variant when not. The
flag is set on all _IO_FILE objects when the first thread is
created. A new GLIBC_PRIVATE libc symbol, _IO_enable_locks,
was added to do this from libpthread.

The optimization can be applied to more stdio functions,
currently it is only applied to single flag check or single
non-wide-char standard operations. The flag should probably
be never set for files with _IO_USER_LOCK, but that's just a
further optimization, not a correctness requirement.

The optimization is valid in a single thread because stdio
operations are non-as-safe (so lock state is not observable
from a signal handler) and stdio locks are recursive (so lock
state is not observable via deadlock). The optimization is not
valid if a thread may be created while an stdio lock is taken
and thus it should be disabled if any user code may run during
an stdio operation (interposed malloc, printf hooks, etc).
This makes the optimization more complicated for some stdio
operations (e.g. printf), but those are bigger and thus less
important to optimize so this patch does not try to do that.

db3476aff1 libio: Implement vtable verification [BZ #20191]
This commit puts all libio vtables in a dedicated, read-only ELF
section, so that they are consecutive in memory. Before any indirect
jump, the vtable pointer is checked against the section boundaries,
and the process is terminated if the vtable pointer does not fall into
the special ELF section.

To enable backwards compatibility, a special flag variable
(_IO_accept_foreign_vtables), protected by the pointer guard, avoids
process termination if libio stream object constructor functions have
been called earlier. Such constructor functions are called by the GCC
2.95 libstdc++ library, and this mechanism ensures compatibility with
old binaries. Existing callers inside glibc of these functions are
adjusted to call the original functions, not the wrappers which enable
vtable compatiblity.

The compatibility mechanism is used to enable passing FILE * objects
across a static dlopen boundary, too.

80d9be8122 Convert miscellaneous function definitions to prototype style.
This patch converts various miscellaneous functions definitions in
glibc, found with grep and not covered by my previous scripted
conversions, from old-style K&R to prototype-style. These changes
were made manually. This is not necessarily exhaustive as formatting
variants may have prevented my grep from finding some such
definitions.

Regarding the changes to files from GMP, they may originally have been
omitted when removing __STDC__ conditionals because of the files
coming from another package, but (a) GMP no longer has __STDC__
conditionals there anyway and (b) we don't try to keep these files
verbatim in sync with GMP (and there are licensing differences), so
making the change to them in glibc seems reasonable.

f63f2bfdfa Convert 69 more function definitions to prototype style (line wrap cases).
This automatically-generated patch converts 69 function definitions in
glibc from old-style K&R to prototype-style.

This patch, covering both sysdeps and non-sysdeps files, deals with
cases where the prototype needed to be wrapped over more than one
line. Otherwise, exclusions and caveats are as for
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2015-10/msg00594.html> and
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2015-10/msg00599.html>.

Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite, and that installed stripped
shared libraries are unchanged by the patch).

9d46370ca3 Convert 703 function definitions to prototype style.
This automatically-generated patch converts 703 function definitions
in glibc from old-style K&R to prototype-style.

This conversion is deliberately simplistic, excluding any tricky cases
as even a patch covering only simple cases is still very large.
Currently excluded are: sysdeps files (to improve test coverage for
the initial patch); files containing assertions (to avoid line number
changes so that generated libraries can be compared); any cases where
the generated function declaration would involve lines over 79
characters and so need to be wrapped; any cases with array parameters
or other cases where parameter declarators don't end with the
parameter name; any other cases that my script didn't parse.

I didn't try to make the ChangeLog generation indicate when function
definitions are conditional; it just lists the functions changed
without regard to that.

Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite, and that installed stripped
shared libraries are unchanged by the patch).
