cd64a96b31 Fix QString::localeAwareCompare with composed/decomposed strings on Windows
With ICU and on macOS it appears that the comparison is done on a
canonical form, while CompareString(Ex) does not do that, as the added
test verifies. Explicit normalization fixes that.

As a bonus, this also unifies the code path between regular Windows
and UWP by unconditionally using CompareStringEx (which requires
Vista or later).

This issue surfaced while running the ECMASCript 6 Conformance Test
Suite in QtQml.

This re-uses the existing test for localeAwareCompare, which was
disabled on Windows, macOS and Linux with ICU (the common case).

91f3687ee5 Make QString's formatting of doubles be consistent with other places
QString::sprintf(), like the C printf-family, always includes two
digits in any exponent it outputs. Up to 5.6, number() and arg()
taking a double did the same; but changes at 5.7 to enable opting out
of the leading zero this implies for a single-digit exponent
accidentally opted out of it in args() and number(). This commit
fixes number() and arg() to include QLocaleData::ZeroPadExponent in
the flags they pass down to the C locale's doubleToString(), restoring
the prior behavior, including consistency with sprintf().

[ChangeLog][QtCore][QString] Formatting of doubles with single-digit
exponent, by number() or args(), now includes a leading zero in that
exponent, consistently with sprintf(), as it did up to 5.6.

ea6675374f QString: fix comparisons to null strings in ucstricmp
Commit 8f52ad9fe0 ("ucstricmp: compare
null and empty strings equal") made sure empties and nulls would compare
equally, but may have broken the null vs non-empty comparison (which was
not tested). The commit message also said that it expected all callers
to handle null before calling into those functions, but that's not the
case for QStringView created from a null QString: the incoming "a"
pointer was null.

So just remove the checks for null pointers and rely on the size checks
doing the right thing.

[ChangeLog][QtCore][QString] Fixed a regression from 5.9 that caused
comparing default-constructed QStrings to be sorted after non-empty
strings.

2b2b9c9962 Update QString::isRightToLeft() to take directional hints into account
Make sure we properly handle both directional embeddings as well as
directional isolates to determine the direction of the string.

According to the latest version of the Unicode bidi algorithm,
parts of the string contained inside an directional isolate is
to be ignored when determining the paragraph direction. Embedding
markers themselves are to be ignored as well, but not the characters
inside an explicit directional embedding or override.

This is also some required pre-work to get our BiDi algorithm
updated to the latest version of the standard.

Move the implementation to QStringView and implement the methods
in QString and QStringRef through that implementation.

126c4eae84 Split Q_COMPILER_UNICODE_STRINGS: add Q_STDLIB_UNICODE_STRINGS
Since commit bf2160e72c, we can rely on
charNN_t support in all compilers except MSVC 2013, and since that
commit, we use (in 5.10, not 5.9, yet)

  !defined(Q_OS_WIN) || defined(Q_COMPILER_UNICODE_STRINGS)

when we only need charNN_t, the type, as opposed to its library
support (u16string, char_traits<char16_t>, ...).

This patch splits the Q_C_UNICODE_STRINGS macro into two, adding
Q_STDLIB_UNICODE_STRINGS for when we need std::uNNstring, leaving
Q_C_UNICODE_STRINGS for when we need just charNN_t support.

In QDebug, when constructing a QChar out of a char16_t, cast to ushort
first, since QChar(char16_t) was only officially introduced in Qt 5.10.

[ChangeLog][Potentially Source-Incompatible Changes] The internal
Q_COMPILER_UNICODE_STRINGS macro is now defined if the compiler
supports charNN_t, even if the standard library does not. To check for
availability of std::uNNstring, use the new Q_STDLIB_UNICODE_STRINGS
macro.

75f5e2bef2 Deprecate QString::null
It's a Qt 3 compatibility vehicle, and as such inherits the now-alien
property to distinguish empty and null strings. Particularly worrisome
is the following asymmetry:

   QString("") == QString::null          // false
   QString("") == QString(QString::null) // true

Instead of fixing this behavior, recognize that people might use it as
a weird way to call isNull(), albeit one that once was idiomatic, and
simply deprecate everything that deals with QString::null.

[ChangeLog][QtCore][QString] QString::null is now deprecated. When
used to construct a QString, use QString() instead. When used to
compare to a QString, replace with QString::isNull().

a5febadac5 QString(Ref): make toLatin1()/toLocal8Bit() null handling consistent
Systematic testing in tst_QStringApiSymmetry revealed a bug in
QStringRef::toLatin1(): a null input did not result in a null output,
but an empty one. This is fixed, for consistency with
QString::toLatin1(), and QString(Ref)::toUtf8(), which behaved
correctly already.

The same bug was found in QString(Ref)::toLocal8Bit(), which is
particularly hideous, as it's documented to fall back to toLatin1(),
which preserves null inputs. Fixed, too.

[ChangeLog][QtCore][QString] toLocal8Bit() now preserves nullness of
the input QString (outputs null QByteArray).

[ChangeLog][QtCore][QStringRef] toLocal8Bit() and toLatin1() now
preserve nullness of the input QStringRef (output null QByteArrays).

268afd8aef Extend QString equality tests with more long strings
Vectorized versions of ucstrncmp work on larger chunks of text
(typically 8 characters and an optional 4 more in some cases), so there
are now 4 extra sets of tests:
- strings of 1-65 characters, all different
- strings of 1-65 characters, all the same
- strings of 1-65 characters, all the same *except* the last character
- strings of 16 characters long, all the same except one, and that one
  is different for every string (i.e. first string differs in first
  char, second in second char, etc)

This should excercise both 1 or more iterations of the vectorized loop,
the detection logic inside the loop, and off-by-one cases.

The input is all ascii, so the ::compare() test will run them for both
QChar-QChar comparisson and for QChar-latin1 comparisson.

009f1f2812 QString: fix regression comparing null QString with null const char *
Commit 4a40c717f3 optimized
QString::compare_helper(QChar*, int, char*, int), but got
the case wrong where the rhs is null, but the lhs is empty,
not null (which is the case even with a null QString, as
QString().constData() != nullptr). The correct result in
this case is 0, since in Qt empty and null strings compare
equal.

Fix by checking the length of lhs, not its pointer.

9c8a8e90a6 QString: fix append(const QStringRef &str)
Use QStringRef::isNull instead of QStringRef::string()
for validation. Non-NULL str.string() may yet leave us
with a useless str.unicode(), which is the actual problem here;
whereas !str.isNull() does really confirm that str.unicode()
is sensible.

Such test prevents situation like:

const QString a;
QString b;
b.append(a); // b.isNull() == true
b.append(QStringRef(&a)); // b.isNull() == false

Auto test updated: create QStringRef from QString directly, without
any condition.

One side changed the iterator to use ranged-for, the other changed its
body; they only conflicted because the latter had to add braces around
the body, intruding on the for-line. Trivial resolution.

e21bf5e6b3 QString::replace(): protect sought text and replacement
When replacing each copy of one text with a copy of another, we do so
in batches of 1024; if we get more than one batch, we need to keep a
copy of the sought text and replacement if they're part of the string
we're modifying, for use in later batches.

Also do the replacements in full batches of 1024, not 1023 (which left
the last entry in an array unused); marked some related tests as
(un)likely; and move some repeated code out into a pair of little
local functions to save duplcation.

Those new functions can also serve replace_helper(); and it can shed a
const_cast and some conditioning of free() by using them the same way
replace() now does. (There was also one place it still used the raw
after, rather than the replacement copy; which could have produced
errors if memcpy were to exercise its right to assume no overlap in
arrays. This error is what prompted me to notice all of the above.)

Added tests. The last error proved untestable as my memcpy is in fact
as fussy as memmove. The first two tests added were attempts to get a
failure out of it. The third did get a failure, but also tripped over
the problem in replace() itself. Added to an existing test function
and renamed it to generally cover extra tests for replace.

08775e4bd7 Revert "QString: preserve embedded NULs when converting from QByteArray"
This partially reverts commit e486d69133.
It broke too many users, even though all of them deserved to be broken.
The new functionality will be provided by differently-named functions,
where possible (problem: equality operators).

I did not revert the fix for the off-by-one error in
tst_qtextdocumentfragment.cpp.

I also didn't revert the change in the inequality relational operators,
since for all strings s1, s2 and s2' where s2' is s2 truncated at the
first NUL, s1 < s2 ⟺ s1 < s2' (since NUL < c for any c != 0), and,
trivially, for ≤, >, ≥, too. This does not hold for = and ≠, of course,
since "foo\0bar" ≠ "foo".

[ChangeLog][Important Behavior Changes][EDITORIAL] Reverted: All
conversions from QByteArray to QString now preserve embedded NULs...

1005b7a0de Long live qUtf16Printable()
QString::asprintf() has the ability to take a ushort* array as
obtained from QString::utf16() and insert that into the output
with an %ls conversion.

But no-one ever used this, because just passing QString::utf16()
to QString::asprintf() creates a warning about wchar_t* expected,
but ushort* provided.

The new qUtf16Printable() macro adds the necessary casts (via void*
to prevent any "type-punned pointer" warnings) to make
passing QString::utf16() to QString::asprintf() work silently.

This should greatly reduce the need to do a round-trip via utf-8
just to print the contents of a QString.

[ChangeLog][QtCore] Added qUtf16Printable().
