This reverts commit 286b96f876.

Reason for revert: 

Failure on Mac Mini:

FAILURE: ../../../tests/ProxyRefTest.cpp:59	proxy->getPendingWriteCnt_TestOnly() == expectedNumWrites

../../../tests/ProxyRefTest.cpp:64: fatal error: "assert(proxy->getPendingWriteCnt_TestOnly() == expectedNumWrites)"
