9716f689b8 [wasm] Do not store ModuleEnv
Instead, create it when needed and pass it down to the actual
compilation.
This saves memory by making the WasmCompilationUnit smaller and will
eventually allow us to implement the trap handler fallback correctly by
using an updated ModuleEnv in background compilation and tier up.

749d1fdaff [wasm] Remove WasmCompilationUnit::FinishCompilation
This method only recorded stats of the generated code object. Since
both counters that are updated are thread-safe anyway, we can just
update them from the background instead (during {ExecuteCompilation}).

e32daf0a3a [wasm] Move error reporting out of FinishCompilation
And remove the TurboFan/Liftoff specific {FinishCompilation}
implementations completely. Compilation errors are now stored in the
{WasmCompilationUnit} directly as a {Result<WasmCode*>}. They are
retrieved via {WasmCompilationUnit::ReportError}, which moves the error
to the {ErrorThrower}.
This prepares more changes to completely remove the {FinishCompilation}
phase.

bfa2be86af [wasm] Move WasmGraphBuildingInterface to own cc file
This class was defined in function-body-decoder.cc, but it's not an
implementation of function body decoding, but rather the interface

98e3e32df2 [wasm] Cache import wrappers in NativeModule
Now that import wrappers are no longer specialized to an index, they
can be cached in the native module, keyed by

also fixes a (slow) memory leak.

a2b3480611 [wasm] Use a tuple as the instance for JS imports
This CL refactors the implementation of WASM->JS import wrappers in order
to make the wrapper code shareable. Instead of specializing to the import
index, we use a tuple as the object ref in the both the import and indirect
tables. The tuple allows the wrapper code to load both the calling
instance and the target callable, rather than relying on code specialization.

This requires some tricky codegen machinery, because WASM call descriptors
expect an instance argument in a given register, yet the wrappers receive
a tuple, the code generator must generate a prologue that loads the
instance (and the callable), since it is not possible to express this at
the graph level.

89f52f8a44 [wasm] Load formal_param_count for mismatched import calls
For WASM import calls to JSFunctions where the arity is mismatched,
we currently generate code that inlines the formal parameter count
of the target function as a constant in a call to the arguments
adapter. This CL changes this to generate code that loads the formal
parameter count from the function at runtime in order to permit
more sharing later.

The WASM engine compiles per-import wrappers for callables imported
into a WASM instance that have one of a number of different shapes,
depending on the type of the imported function and whether there is
a signature match. This CL introduces an enum with a value for each
case in preparation for introducing a per-kind cache.

This CL introduces a set of configuration options implemented as

flags that were checked deep in the implementation. As such, it is
necessary to plumb them through multiple levels of abstraction.

99de47f155 [cleanup] Remove redundant wasm:: namespace prefixes
The wasm/ directory is inconsistent in many places, often within the
same file. For all code that exists in a v8::internal::wasm namespace,
this CL removes any wasm:: qualifiers, which is especially helpful
since most types are already Wasm-named, such as WasmCode, WasmModule,
etc. Namespace qualifiers are redundant inside the wasm:: namespace and
thus go against the main point of using namespaces. Removing the
qualifiers for non Wasm-named classes also makes the code somewhat more
future-proof, should we move some things that are not really WASM-specific
(such as ErrorThrower and Decoder) into a higher namespace.

As a next step, we could even share the code across instances, or (with

733b7c8258 [wasm] Introduce jump table
This introduces the concept of a jump table for WebAssembly, which is
used for every direct and indirect call to any WebAssembly function.
For lazy compilation, it will initially contain code to call the
WasmCompileLazy builtin, where it passes the function index to be
called.
For non-lazy-compilation, it will contain a jump to the actual code.
The jump table allows to easily redirect functions for lazy
compilation, tier-up, debugging and (in the future) code aging. After
this CL, we will not need to patch existing code any more for any of
these operations.

fffa33179d [wasm] Register and release protected instructions only once
We currently have a system where the protected instructions are
unregistered when the last instance dies, and registered again on the
next instantiation. This is triggered by {WasmCompiledModule::Reset}.
Since the reference to the {NativeModule} will move to the
{WasmModuleObject}, and this object stays alive even if the last
instance dies, this will become hard to maintain.
It will also make it harder to share wasm code across isolates.
This CL refactors this to register trap handler data once when the code
is added to the {NativeModule}, and releases it if the code dies.

The {WasmSharedModuleData} struct was introduced to hold data common to

this objective has no real value, and we already store some internal

c96ac82c50 [wasm] Make stack check independent of the Isolate.
This makes stack checks in WasmCode independent of the underlying
Isolate by loading the limit address from the WasmInstanceObject instead
of embedding it into the instruction stream. It hence removes the last
use of the Isolate field from WasmGraphBuilder.

Additionally this introduces the notion of a "runtime stub" which
represents stub code global to the NativeModule that can be directly
called from each WasmCode in the same module. These stubs can act as
trampolines via which Isolate-independent WasmCode can enter other V8
builtins or runtime functions that remain Isolate-dependent. They will
eventually replace the current "trampoline" in a NativeModule.

d8131cd63a [builtins] Convert CEntry/GetProperty/StringAdd stubs to builtins
Stubs and builtins are very similar. The main differences are that
stubs can be parameterized and may be generated at runtime, whereas
builtins are generated at mksnapshot-time and shipped with the snapshot
(or embedded into the binary).

My main motivation for these conversions is that we can generate
faster calls and jumps to (embedded) builtins callees from (embedded)
builtin callers. Instead of going through the builtins constants table
indirection, we can simply do a pc-relative call/jump.

This also unlocks other refactorings, e.g. removal of
CallRuntimeDelayed.

8466b71ad8 [wasm] Split off wasm-linkage.h
Linkage-related methods were declared in wasm-compiler.h and
implemented in wasm-linkage.cc. This required all users of e.g. wasm
call descriptors to include the whole wasm compiler header. Also, some
wasm linkage information is independent of turbofan and also used
outside of the compiler directory.

This CL splits off wasm-linkage.h (with minimal includes) and puts it
in src/wasm. This allows to use that information without including
compiler headers (will clean up several uses in follow-up CLs).

0da7ec58c9 [wasm] Tear apart the WasmCompilationUnit
This refactoring is a big step towards separating Turbofan-related code
from backend independent code. This will allow us to include way less
headers from "src/compiler" at various places.

The {WasmCompilationUnit} contained information for Turbofan
compilation, and for Liftoff compilation. This CL tears this apart, such
that {WasmCompilationUnit} holds backend-independent information, plus
a pointer to either {LiftoffCompilationUnit} or
{TurbofanWasmCompilationUnit}. These pointers are opaque, so that
{function-compiler.h}, defining {WasmCompilationUnit}, does not need to
include any Turbofan specific or Liftoff specific headers.

fb226a117a [wasm] Avoid transition from unhandlified to handlified
The ImportedFunctionEntry and IndirectFunctionTableEntry stored handles
internally, but were created from raw pointers. This is not allowed.
The two options to fix this are to either handlify the whole interface,
or do the opposite and use raw pointers everywhere. Since no current
user depends on a handlified interface, and both objects are being used
in performance critical code, this CL unhandlifies the interface and
adds a DisallowHeapAllocation scope to enforce that no GC happens while
any ImportedFunctionEntry or IndirectFunctionTableEntry is alive.

cleaner to split up the CompilationInfo into UnoptimizedCompilationInfo and

Doing so also necessitate splitting up CompilationJob into UnoptimizedCompilationJob

57bf0bfefb [wasm] Merge the WasmContext into WasmInstanceObject
This change makes lifetime management of WasmCode much simpler.
By using the WasmInstanceObject as the context for WASM code execution,
including the pointer to the memory base and indirect function tables,
this keeps the instance alive when WASM code is on the stack, since
the instance object is passed as a parameter and spilled onto the stack.
This is in preparation of sharing the code between instances and
isolates.

49a1a9a467 [wasm] Parse function names on demand
Function names are optional in wasm and might not be present for most
functions. Instead of storing an empty name with each function, this
change loads names, if present, on first access of the name.

This also fixes an inconsistency with streaming compilation. Under
streaming compilation, functions are compiled before parsing the name
section. Hence, they always received an empty name. With this change,
assignment of names is typically deferred until the whole module was
parsed.

553e70b9b2 [wasm] Merge function table and signature table
Both tables are always updated together and are always accessed
together. Thus merge them, reducing code complexity, but also code
space and overhead for accessing them during runtime. Instead of two
weak global handles, we only need one, which also means one less load
for each indirect call.
Merging them also improves cache locality, since signature and code
address are not stored next to each other in memory, so they will very
likely end up in the same cache line.

a1fcd77714 [wasm] Dehandlify WasmCompiledModule interface
The interface of {WasmCompiledModule} currently mostly receives and
provides handles to the contained data. Other interfaces don't (see
{object-macros.h}.
This leads to performance and memory overhead for chained accesses like
{instance->compiled_module()->shared()->script()}, because intermediate
accessors allocate Handles for no reason. It also breaks the
constraints that lower-case accessors should be trivial to execute, but
allocating a handle is not trivial (should not be done in a loop if not
needed).
It also silences gcmole errors, as documented in
https://crrev.com/c/832268.

0d5de9ad9b [wasm] First step of refactoring trap handling to be per module.
The previous code assumed that trap handling was a global concept, defined
by function trap_handler::UseTrapHandler(). This CL does the first step
in changing the decision to be specifiable at a module level.

Therefore trap_handler::UseTrapHandler() is replaced by
trap_handler::IsTrapHandlerEnabled(), and communicates if compilation
supports the use of trap handlers (but still allowing the use of
bounds checking on memory accesses).

It then refactors the classes ModuleEnv and WasmCompiledModule to have
a field "use_trap_handler" that specifies if traps should be used for
the memory accesses in the module being compiled.

code generation outside the JavaScript GC heap using the previously -

became obsolete. This CL removes now these obsolete scopes, and
introduces some scopes where shared code was used from outside the

69d790e521 [wasm] Remove --wasm-guard-pages flag
This flag was originally added as a staging mechanism to let us land and test
guard regions without the full trap handler feature landing. Additionally, we
thought we might enable guard regions without trap handlers on some systems.

Trap handlers are now supported, and there's not a real compelling reason for
why we need guard regions without trap handlers. Keeping the separate flag leads
to confusion, since some code treats guard regions and trap handlers the same,
while other code treats them as independent.

Removing this flag and its associated special cases makes everything more
uniform and predictable.

6cd7a5a73a [wasm] Introduce the WasmContext
The WasmContext struct introduced in this CL is used to store the
mem_size and mem_start address of the wasm memory. These variables can
be accessed at C++ level at graph build time (e.g., initialized during
instance building). When the GrowMemory runtime is invoked, the context
variables can be changed in the WasmContext at C++ level so that the
generated code will load the correct values.

This requires to insert a relocatable pointer only in the
JSToWasmWrapper (and in the other wasm entry points), the value is then
passed from function to function as an automatically added additional
parameter. The WasmContext is then dropped when creating an Interpreter
Entry or when invoking a JavaScript function. This removes the need of
patching the generated code at runtime (i.e., when the memory grows)
with respect to WASM_MEMORY_REFERENCE and WASM_MEMORY_SIZE_REFERENCE.
However, we still need to patch the code at instance build time to patch
the JSToWasmWrappers; in fact the address of the WasmContext is not
known during compilation, but only when the instance is built.

The WasmContext address is passed as the first parameter. This has the
advantage of not having to move the WasmContext around if the function
does not use many registers. This CL also changes the wasm calling
convention so that the first parameter register is different from the
return value register. The WasmContext is attached to every
WasmMemoryObject, to share the same context with multiple instances
sharing the same memory. Moreover, the nodes representing the
WasmContext variables are cached in the SSA environment, similarly to
other local variables that might change during execution. The nodes are
created when initializing the SSA environment and refreshed every time a
grow_memory or a function call happens, so that we are sure that they
always represent the correct mem_size and mem_start variables.

This CL also removes the WasmMemorySize runtime (since it's now possible
to directly retrieve mem_size from the context) and simplifies the
GrowMemory runtime (since every instance now has a memory_object).

c7b3fddcbb [wasm] do not register trap handler data for previously registered code
Previously, we would blindly register new handler data, leading to us leaking
the old handler data. This meant we could then end up with overlapping handler
data where the instruction offset and landing pads didn't line up right.

2d75dd9bbb [cleanup] [wasm] Fix (D)CHECK macros
Use the (D)CHECK_{EQ,NE,GT,...} macros instead of (D)CHECK with an
embedded comparison. This gives better error messages and also does the
right comparison for signed/unsigned mismatches.

This will allow us to reenable the readability/check cpplint check.

ae53f26d8f [wasm] [test] Reuse WasmCompilationUnit to compile functions
This further reduces the amount of test-specific code. It will also
help testing the wasm baseline compiler, since it is also being called
from the {WasmCompilationUnit}.

Also, move the {RuntimeExceptionSupport} flag from the
{WasmFunctionCompiler} to the {TestingModuleBuilder}. There is no need
to store this per function builder. The {TestingModuleBuilder} then
passes it on to the {WasmCompilationUnit}, which finally sets it on the
{WasmGraphBuilder}.
