1f7721b1a2 [inspector][fuzzer] Fix timeouts on endless loops
The watchdog previously didn't terminate execution, it just prevented
the execution of additional tasks.
This CL fixes that by making {TaskRunner::Terminate} actually terminate
execution in the isolate.

It also adds a regression test for this.

0396b732e7 [wasm-gc] read_heap_type should check if index is in module bounds
read_heap_type did not have knowledge of the module for which the heap
type was being decoded. As a result, callers of read_heap_type (or
read_value_type, which in turn calls read_heap_type) had to check after
the fact that a decoded indexed type (ref, ref null, or rtt) references
a type index within the module's bounds. This was not done consistently,
and was missing (at least) in DecodeLocals.
To avoid such problems in the future, this CL refactors read_heap_type
to accept a module and check the decoded index against it.

Changes:
- Add WasmModule argument to read_heap_type. Do so accordingly to all
its transitive callers (read_value_type, immediate arguments,
  DecodeLocalDecls, DecodeValue/HeapType in unittests).
- Add index check to read_heap_type and emit an error for an
  out-of-bounds index.
- Remove all other now-redundant index validations. Replace them with
decoder->ok() if needed (since read_heap_type will now emit an error).
- Fix error message in Validate for BlockTypeImmediate.
- In DecodeLocalDecls in unittests, pass an empty module to
  DecodeLocalDecls in the main code.
- Add a unit test with an invalid index in local type declarations.

89ffd740cd [wasm] Update and run script to generate fuzzer corpus
The wasm fuzzer corpus is pretty outdated. The script that was used to
generate it did not work any more.
This CL updates the script, and runs it. This generates a fuzzer corpus
of 42011 wasm modules, compared to 15290 before. The new modules will
contain new features like SIMD and multi-value, which will be
interesting fuzzer inputs.

14c5b0ae67 [config] Add V8_NODISCARD for Scope classes
Scopes in V8 are used to guarantee one or more properties during its
lifetimes. If a scope is not named e.g MyClassScope(args) instead of
MyClassScope scope(args) it will get created and automatically destroyed
and therefore, being useless as a scope. This CL would produce a
compiling warning when that happens to ward off this developer error.

Follow-up to ccrev.com/2552415 in which it was introduced and
implemented for Guard classes.

83a2f390f1 [inspector][fuzzer] Suppress messages about uncaught exceptions
The fuzzer is expected to generate a lot of syntax and runtime errors,
and the respective messages just flood the fuzzer output. By always
putting a {TryCatch} scope around the execution, we prevent those
messages from being printed.
At the same time, inspector tests need to properly propagate uncaught
exceptions in the backend to the inspector, and fail on uncaught
exceptions in the frontend.

This CL allows for all these behaviours by extending the
{CatchExceptions} enum and the {TryCatch} logic in the task runner.

Drive-by: Use {base::OS::ExitProcess} instead of the explicit
{fflush} and {_exit}.

4d97ff5900 [inspector][test][cleanup] Introduce enums for bools
Instead of passing two bools to the {TaskRunner} constructor, pass to
enums. This makes the semantics more clear in the caller.

In the fuzzer, we actually *do not* want to catch exceptions. This
semantic fix will be done in a follow-up CL, such that this CL is a pure
refactoring.

4510401df4 [inspector][fuzzer] Fix termination
Joining the thread from the watchdog is problematic, since e.g.
{pthread_join} (the implementation of {Thread::Join} on POSIX systems)
has undefined behaviour if multiple threads try to join at the same
time. In practice, this leads to deadlocks.

Thus implement termination by just calling {TaskRunner::Terminate}, but
not {TaskRunner::Join}. This fixes the deadlocks in the inspector
fuzzer.
The inspector test binary is fixed simarly, even though there it seems
to not cause problems so far.

In both files, the {Terminate} function is inlined into callers because
it's only a single line now, with one to two users.

Also, replace the single fuzzer test (which is invalid javascript) by
two tests: One called "invalid" explicitly, still with invalid
javascript, and one empty file, which is valid input. That one
reproduced the deadlock.

5ab0bded18 [inspector][fuzzer] Add watchdog to avoid timeouts
The inspector fuzzer is running into timeouts most of the time
currently, because the test explicitly needs to quit execution.
Make fuzzing more efficient by adding a watchdog thread which stop
execution after 2 seconds. This will still result in valid test cases,
i.e. everything that was executed within those two seconds will count as
covered code.

Drive-by: Slightly simplify the storage of task runners. No need to
clear the vector after termination.

This adds a first simple version of the inspector fuzzer, which is a

There are still memory leaks, and the fuzzer will probably run into
timeouts most of the time. Both of this will be addressed in follow-ups.

5720d2056c [regexp] Add 'l' flag to force experimental engine
This commit adds the 'l' (linear) RegExp flag (as in e.g. /asdf|123/l)
that forces execution in linear time. These regexps are handled by the
experimental engine. If the experimental engine cannot handle the
pattern, an exception is thrown on creation of the regexp.

The commit also adds a new global V8 flag and changes an existing one:
* --enable-experimental-engine, which turns on recognition of the RegExp
'l' flag. Previously this flag also caused all supported regexps to
be executed by the experimental engine; this is not the case anymore.
* --default-to-experimental-regexp-engine takes over the previous
semantics of --enable-experimental-regexp-engine: We execute all
supported regexps with the experimental engine.

fbfa9bf4ec Reland "[deoptimizer] Change deopt entries into builtins"
This is a reland of 7f58ced72e

It fixes the different exit size emitted on x64/Atom CPUs due to
performance tuning in TurboAssembler::Call. Additionally, add
cctests to verify the fixed size exits.

7f58ced72e [deoptimizer] Change deopt entries into builtins
While the overall goal of this commit is to change deoptimization
entries into builtins, there are multiple related things happening:

- Deoptimization entries, formerly stubs (i.e. Code objects generated
at runtime, guaranteed to be immovable), have been converted into
builtins. The major restriction is that we now need to preserve the
kRootRegister, which was formerly used on most architectures to pass
the deoptimization id. The solution differs based on platform.
- Renamed DEOPT_ENTRIES_OR_FOR_TESTING code kind to FOR_TESTING.
- Removed heap/ support for immovable Code generation.
- Removed the DeserializerData class (no longer needed).
- arm64: to preserve 4-byte deopt exits, introduced a new optimization
in which the final jump to the deoptimization entry is generated
once per Code object, and deopt exits can continue to emit a
  near-call.
- arm,ia32,x64: change to fixed-size deopt exits. This reduces exit
sizes by 4/8, 5, and 5 bytes, respectively.

On arm the deopt exit size is reduced from 12 (or 16) bytes to 8 bytes
by using the same strategy as on arm64 (recalc deopt id from return
address). Before:

 e300a002 movw r10, <id>
 e59fc024 ldr ip, [pc, <entry offset>]
 e12fff3c blx ip

After:

 e59acb35 ldr ip, [r10, <entry offset>]
 e12fff3c blx ip

On arm64 the deopt exit size remains 4 bytes (or 8 bytes in same cases
with CFI). Additionally, up to 4 builtin jumps are emitted per Code
object (max 32 bytes added overhead per Code object). Before:

 9401cdae bl <entry offset>

After:

 # eager deoptimization entry jump.
 f95b1f50 ldr x16, [x26, <eager entry offset>]
 d61f0200 br x16
 # lazy deoptimization entry jump.
 f95b2b50 ldr x16, [x26, <lazy entry offset>]
 d61f0200 br x16
 # the deopt exit.
 97fffffc bl <eager deoptimization entry jump offset>

On ia32 the deopt exit size is reduced from 10 to 5 bytes. Before:

 bb00000000 mov ebx,<id>
 e825f5372b call <entry>

After:

 e8ea2256ba call <entry>

On x64 the deopt exit size is reduced from 12 to 7 bytes. Before:

 49c7c511000000 REX.W movq r13,<id>
 e8ea2f0700 call <entry>

After:

29bcdaad1d Rename legacy code kinds
CodeKind::OPTIMIZED_CODE -> TURBOFAN

Kinds are now more fine-grained and distinguish between TF, TP, NCI.

CodeKind::STUB -> DEOPT_ENTRIES_OR_FOR_TESTING

Code stubs (like builtins, but generated at runtime) were removed from
the codebase years ago, this is the last remnant. This kind is used
only for deopt entries (which should be converted into builtins) and
for tests.

This unifies {max_initial_mem_pages} and {max_maximum_mem_pages} into

The {CompilationEnv} constructor was incorrectly using the former

they typically have the same value.
Also, there is not a single test that sets --wasm-max-mem-pages-growth.

83fa52a543 [wasm-simd] Set default args for v128 values
Instantiating a module that contains a function (exported) with a v128
in its signature is fine, but then later calling it will trap.

So v128 values are technically not callable from JS, but we can give it
a default argument of 0, and will later trap anyway. This is useful when
fuzzers generate functions with v128 in the signature of the main
function that we then later try to call.

a97af0b566 [wasm][fuzzer] Fix printing locals declarations
The API in the wasm module builder changed recently
(https://crrev.com/c/2390144). The fuzzer was still emitting code for
the old API.
This CL fixes this for primitive types, and adds a TODO to implement
heap types when needed.

1d2726dd0b [wasm-simd] Stage SIMD
SIMD has been pretty stable for a while now, we are not expecting big
changes (like opcode renumbers), there might be new instructions added,
and they will all be backwards-compatible.

The reference interpreter in the SIMD proposal is now capable of
generating JS files for all test cases, so we can now run them.

There is a bit of tweaking necessary, since SIMD tests are in
tests/core/simd subfolder in the spec, so we need to change the glob
into a find that will traverse into subdirectory.

2d78b3a72a [wasm][fuzzer] Fix BigInt parameters
The fuzzers were calling the compiled function without passing explicit
arguments. Thus all arguments were converted from the "undefined" value,
which typically results in a zero value, as expected.
For BigInt though, it's not allowed to pass "undefined". We have to pass
a proper BigInt.
This CL implements this by passing explicit parameter values for all
parameters.

This effectively unlocks testing BigInt parameters in all fuzzers, thus
may increase coverage and find new bugs.

The "wasm fuzzer" and "wasm async fuzzer" use the
{InterpretAndExecuteModule} function, which did not check for possible

c51041f454 [nci] Replace CompilationTarget with a new Code::Kind value
With the new Turbofan variants (NCI and Turboprop), we need a way to
distinguish between them both during and after compilation. We
initially introduced CompilationTarget to track the variant during
compilation, but decided to reuse the code kind as the canonical spot to
store this information instead.

Why? Because it is an established mechanism, already available in most
of the necessary spots (inside the pipeline, on Code objects, in
profiling traces).

This CL removes CompilationTarget and adds a new
NATIVE_CONTEXT_INDEPENDENT kind, plus helper functions to determine
various things about a given code kind (e.g.: does this code kind
deopt?).

As a (very large) drive-by, refactor both Code::Kind and
AbstractCode::Kind into a new CodeKind enum class.

01e59c4bd9 [wasm-gc] Refactoring in preparation of generalizing WasmInitExpr
Motivation: With rtt.sub now allowed in constant expressions, we have
to generalize WasmInitExpr to be able to handle expressions with
operands. This CL prepares the ground for this change and adds no
functionality.

Changes:
- ValueType::heap_representation and HeapType::representation now
  return HeapType::Representation.
- Add ValueType::is_rtt().
- WasmInitExpr:
  - Make kind private. Rename val -> operator, make it private. Add
    accessors.
  - Rename kGlobalIndex -> kGlobalGet.
  - Squash global_index and function_index into index.
  - Add heap_type Immediate. Use it for RefNullConst. TypeOf in
module-decoder.cc can now fully determine the type of a
    WasmInitExpr.
  - Add class constructors/static method constructors for each Operator
    kind.
  - Delete copy constructor. WasmInitExpr will use std::unique_ptr for
    its operands.
- consume_init_expr now uses a stack.
- A few minor improvements.

5df74c351f [wasm] Properly implement parsing of s33 values
Motivation:
We used to approximate s33/i33 value parsing by first checking for
specific negative codes, and then parsing an u32 value if that failed.
This is not correct in all cases.

Changes:
- Implement i33 parsing in Decoder.
- Factor out parsing of heap types into read_heap_type.
- Introduce HeapType::kBottom.
- Introduce helper functions in WasmFeatures and value_type_reader.
- Remove macros from the parsing of value types.
- HeapType::code now returns an i32 for compatibility with the i33
  requirement.
- Introduce HeapType::Repr.
- Renamings: HeapType::type() -> representation(),
             ValueType::heap() -> heap_representation()

We should revert this change (and also move bitmask out of the flag)

852f43cd70 [wasm] Make opcode properties constexpr
This allows the compiler to eliminate more unneeded branches. Since all
functions just do a lookup in a static table (either directly, or via
compiling a switch to such a lookup), they are also good candidates for
inlining, which is made possible by this change.

One DCHECK is removed instead of pulling in the inl header, which would
require more refactoring since the check is in a non-inl header.

fe3531c4c2 [wasm][fuzzer] Avoid creating temporary std::vectors
Instead of creating temporary {std::vector}s (which always allocate on

As this is "only" a fuzzer, performance is not really critical, but

That said, this CL is mostly a cleanup to replace unwanted code pattern
by better code.

52f6529634 [wasm-gc] Change ValueType representation to account for new types
Motivation:
Changes to the typed function references and gc proposals solidified
the notion of heap type, clarified nullable vs. non-nullable reference
types, and introduced rtts, which contain an integer depth field in
addition to a heap type. This required us to overhaul our ValueType
representation, which results in extensive changes.

To keep this CL "small", we do not try to implement the binary encoding
as described in the proposals, but rather devise a simpler one of our
own (see below). Also, we do not try to implement additional
functionality for the new types.

Changes:
- Introduce HeapType. Move heap types from ValueType to HeapType.
- Introduce Nullability for reference types.
- Rework ValueType helper methods.
- Introduce rtts in ValueType with an integer depth field. Include depth
  in the ValueType encoding.
- Make the constructor of ValueType private, instead expose static
functions which explicitly state what they create.
- Change every switch statement on ValueType::Kind. Sometimes, we need
  nested switches.
- Introduce temporary constants in ValueTypeCode for nullable types,
  use them for decoding.
- In WasmGlobalObject, split 'flags' into 'raw_type' and 'is_mutable'.
- Change IsSubtypeOfRef to IsSubtypeOfHeap and implement changes in
  subtyping.
- kWasmFuncRef initializers are now non-nullable. Initializers are
only required to be subtypes of the declared global type.
- Change tests and fuzzers as needed.

d8c9ae5295 [compiler] Fix double error reporting for parser errors
Remove error reporting from parsing::Parse*, since in most cases we

As a drive-by, move some one-off parse exception handling in
test-parsing into a CHECKED_PARSE_PROGRAM macro which replaces all the
"necessarily positive" calls to parsing::ParseProgram.

3c422d1c5e [snapshot] Clear reconstructable data prior to d8 stress_snapshot run
The serializer currently cannot handle a heap state containing
arbitrary compiled Code objects. As a quick fix for the
--stress-snapshot d8 flag, we clear compiled data from the isolate
prior to the serialize-deserialize-verify pass.

With this change, mjsunit tests pass on x64.

The %SerializeDeserializeNow() runtime function would require more
work, since it is not possible to mutate the heap to this extent while
still preserving a runnable host context and isolate. We will need
another solution there.

Drive-by: Skip the stress_snapshot variant except for the mjsunit
suite.

6458a5296b [compile] Add an UnoptimizedCompileState class
Move the persistent compilation state and Isolate inputs (such as the
allocator, shared AST constants, hash seed, logger, etc.) which survives
across both parse and compile, out of ParseInfo and into a new
UnoptimizedCompileState class. Also add UnoptimizedCompilePerThreadState
for per-thread state such as stack limit and RCS.

In particular, this new state survives the ParseInfo being destructed,
which means it is available after off-thread finalization. This allows a
followup to access the PendingCompilationErrorHandler after finalization
and report errors on merge.

313d4844d9 Reland^3 "[parser] Introduce UnoptimizedCompileFlags"
This is a reland of 0a59e0cb08
which was a reland of 146f5375da
which was a reland of d91679bf3a

Initializes the BackgroundCompileTasks's language_mode in the
constructor (previously only initialized after successful parse) in case
the parse failed. We still need to reset it after parse in case the
language mode changed (because we encountered "use strict").

Original change's description:

d91679bf3a [parser] Introduce UnoptimizedCompileFlags
UnoptimizedCompileFlags defines the input flags shared between parse and
compile (currently parse-only). It is set initially with some values, and
is immutable after being passed to ParseInfo (ParseInfo still has getters
for the fields, but no setters).

Since a few of the existing flags were output flags, ParseInfo now has a
new output_flags field, which will eventually migrate to a ParseOutputs
structure.

d86f8ea50a Fix checking of prefixed memory ops in fuzzer
In https://crrev.com/c/2084321 I added s128 load store to the fuzzer,
and updated the memop generator to use IsPrefixOpcode check. But it was
used wrongly. IsPrefixOpcode checks a 1 byte opcode and see if it is a
prefix opcode, but if memory_op is already a 2 byte opcode, it will fail
the IsPrefixOpcode check.

b097a8e5de [api] Create v8::String::NewFromLiteral that returns Local<String>
String::NewFromLiteral is a templated function that takes a char[N]
argument that can be used as an alternative to String::NewFromUtf8 and
returns a Local<String> rather than a MaybeLocal<String> reducing the
number of ToLocalChecked() or other checks.

Since the string length is known at compile time, it can statically
assert that the length is less than String::kMaxLength, which means that
it can never fail at runtime.

This also converts all found uses of NewFromUtf8 taking a string literal
or a variable initialized from a string literal to use the new API. In
some cases the types of stored string literals are changed from const
char* to const char[] to ensure the size is retained.

This API does introduce a small difference compared to NewFromUtf8. For
a case like "abc\0def", NewFromUtf8 (using length -1 to infer length)
would treat this as a 3 character string, whereas the new API will treat
it as a 7 character string.

As a drive-by fix, this also fixes all redundant uses of
v8::NewStringType::kNormal when passed to any of the String::New*
functions.

9f0f2cb7f0 [weakrefs] Call Isolate::ClearKeptObjects() as part of microtask checkpoint
In the spec, WeakRefs that are dereferenced are kept alive until there's
no JS on the stack, and then the host is expected to call
ClearKeptObjects to clear those strong references [1]. HTML calls
ClearKeptObjects at the end of a PerformMicrotaskCheckpoint [2].

In V8, leaving this up to the embedder is error prone in the same way
the deprecated FinalizationGroup callback APIs were error prone: it
depends on the embedder doing the right thing. This CL moves the call to
ClearKeptObjects to be after running of microtasks within V8.

However, the Isolate::ClearKeptObjects API should not be removed or
deprecated in case an embedder uses an entirely custom MicrotaskQueue
implementation and invokes MicrotaskQueue::PerformCheckpoint manually.

27b41b54ab [wasm-simd] Add some simd ops to fuzzer
This is still very limited, but we will have some simd instructions.
We add 2 kinds of instructions:
- any_true to generate i32 from v128
- add to generate v128 from v128 and v128
- extract_lane to generate v128 from all other types

We do not add v128 to the list of types returned by GetValueType, since
that is used in a couple of places, like generating globals, which
requires v128.const but is not implemented yet.

Special case to enable the experimental-wasm-simd flag since simd is not

Remove the explicit script handle from ParseInfo, and make it either
a Handle that is passed around where needed, or one inferred from the

This will be useful for compilation finalization using the off-thread
factory, which will not generate real Handles since it has no access
to the Isolate.

dde3166beb [wasm] Remove one {NewNativeModule} method
This makes the {code_size_estimate} computation explicit in the caller,
and removes one of the two {NewNativeModule} constructors. It turns out
that the calculation is totally off in the streaming calculation phase,
since no function bodies have been parsed yet. So all
{WasmFunction::code} fields are still empty, and we compute an estimate
that is way too low.
This CL prepares the actual fix for that (by computing a better estimate
at specific call sites).
