Use copysign functions not __copysign functions in glibc libm.
Continuing the move to use, within libm, public names for libm functions that can be inlined as built-in functions on many architectures, this patch moves calls to __copysign functions to call the corresponding copysign names instead, with asm redirection to __copysign when the calls are not inlined (all cases are inlined except for IBM long double for powerpc soft-float / e500v1). This eliminates the need for an inline function defining __copysign in terms of __builtin_copysign. Use round functions not __round functions in glibc libm.
Continuing the move to use, within libm, public names for libm functions that can be inlined as built-in functions on many architectures, this patch moves calls to __round functions to call the corresponding round names instead, with asm redirection to __round when the calls are not inlined. An additional complication arises in sysdeps/ieee754/ldbl-128ibm/e_expl.c, where a call to roundl, with the result converted to int, gets converted by the compiler to call lroundl in the case of 32-bit long, so resulting in localplt test failures. It's logically correct to let the compiler make such an optimization; an appropriate asm redirection of lroundl to __lroundl is thus added to that file (it's not needed anywhere else). Tested for x86_64, and with build-many-glibcs.py. * include/math.h [!_ISOMAC && !(__FINITE_MATH_ONLY__ && __FINITE_MATH_ONLY__ > 0) && !NO_MATH_REDIRECT] (round): Redirect using MATH_REDIRECT. * sysdeps/aarch64/fpu/s_round.c: Define NO_MATH_REDIRECT before header inclusion. * sysdeps/aarch64/fpu/s_roundf.c: Likewise. * sysdeps/ieee754/dbl-64/s_round.c: Likewise. * sysdeps/ieee754/dbl-64/wordsize-64/s_round.c: Likewise. * sysdeps/ieee754/float128/s_roundf128.c: Likewise. * sysdeps/ieee754/flt-32/s_roundf.c: Likewise. * sysdeps/ieee754/ldbl-128/s_roundl.c: Likewise. * sysdeps/ieee754/ldbl-96/s_roundl.c: Likewise. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/power4/fpu/multiarch/s_round.c: Likewise. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/power4/fpu/multiarch/s_roundf.c: Likewise. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc64/fpu/multiarch/s_round.c: Likewise. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc64/fpu/multiarch/s_roundf.c: Likewise. * sysdeps/riscv/rv64/rvd/s_round.c: Likewise. * sysdeps/riscv/rvf/s_roundf.c: Likewise. * sysdeps/ieee754/ldbl-128ibm/s_roundl.c: Likewise. powerpc: Only enable TLE with PPC_FEATURE2_HTM_NOSC
Linux from 3.9 through 4.2 does not abort HTM transaction on syscalls, instead it suspend and resume it when leaving the kernel. The side-effects of the syscall will always remain visible, even if the transaction is aborted. This is an issue when transaction is used along with futex syscall, on pthread_cond_wait for instance, where the futex call might succeed but the transaction is rolled back leading the pthread_cond object in an inconsistent state. Glibc used to prevent it by always aborting a transaction before issuing a syscall. Linux 4.2 also decided to abort active transaction in syscalls which makes the glibc workaround superfluous. Worse, glibc transaction abortion leads to a performance issue on recent kernels where the HTM state is saved/restore lazily (v4.9). By aborting a transaction on every syscalls, regardless whether a transaction has being initiated before, GLIBS makes the kernel always save/restore HTM state (it can not even lazily disable it after a certain number of syscall iterations). Because of this shortcoming, Transactional Lock Elision is just enabled when it has been explicitly set (either by tunables of by a configure switch) and if kernel aborts HTM transactions on syscalls (PPC_FEATURE2_HTM_NOSC). It is reported that using simple benchmark [1], the context-switch is about 5% faster by not issuing a tabort in every syscall in newer kernels. Checked on powerpc64le-linux-gnu with 4.4.0 kernel (Ubuntu 16.04). * NEWS: Add note about new TLE support on powerpc64le. * sysdeps/powerpc/nptl/tcb-offsets.sym (TM_CAPABLE): Remove. * sysdeps/powerpc/nptl/tls.h (tcbhead_t): Rename tm_capable to __ununsed1. Use rint functions not __rint functions in glibc libm.
Continuing the move to use, within libm, public names for libm functions that can be inlined as built-in functions on many architectures, this patch moves calls to __rint functions to call the corresponding rint names instead, with asm redirection to __rint when the calls are not inlined. This patch is relative to a tree with my floor patch <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2018-09/msg00148.html> applied, and much the same considerations arise regarding possibly replacing an IFUNC call with a direct inline expansion. Use floor functions not __floor functions in glibc libm.
Similar to the changes that were made to call sqrt functions directly in glibc, instead of __ieee754_sqrt variants, so that the compiler could inline them automatically without needing special inline definitions in lots of math_private.h headers, this patch makes libm code call floor functions directly instead of __floor variants, removing the inlines / macros for x86_64 (SSE4.1) and powerpc (POWER5). The redirection used to ensure that __ieee754_sqrt does still get called when the compiler doesn't inline a built-in function expansion is refactored so it can be applied to other functions; the refactoring is arranged so it's not limited to unary functions either (it would be reasonable to use this mechanism for copysign - removing the inline in math_private_calls.h but also eliminating unnecessary local PLT entry use in the cases (powerpc soft-float and e500v1, for IBM long double) where copysign calls don't get inlined). The point of this change is that more architectures can get floor calls inlined where they weren't previously (AArch64, for example), without needing special inline definitions in their math_private.h, and existing such definitions in math_private.h headers can be removed. Note that it's possible that in some cases an inline may be used where an IFUNC call was previously used - this is the case on x86_64, for example. I think the direct calls to floor are still appropriate; if there's any significant performance cost from inline SSE2 floor instead of an IFUNC call ending up with SSE4.1 floor, that indicates that either the function should be doing something else that's faster than using floor at all, or it should itself have IFUNC variants, or that the compiler choice of inlining for generic tuning should change to allow for the possibility that, by not inlining, an SSE4.1 IFUNC might be called at runtime - but not that glibc should avoid calling floor internally. (After all, all the same considerations would apply to any user program calling floor, where it might either be inlined or left as an out-of-line call allowing for a possible IFUNC.) Tested for x86_64, and with build-many-glibcs.py. * include/math.h [!_ISOMAC && !(__FINITE_MATH_ONLY__ && __FINITE_MATH_ONLY__ > 0) && !NO_MATH_REDIRECT] (MATH_REDIRECT): New macro. Currently, powerpc, powerpc64, and powerpc64le imply the same set of subdirectories from sysdeps/ieee754: flt-32, dbl-64, ldbl-128ibm, and ldbl-opt. In preparation for the transition of the long double format - from IBM Extended Precision to IEEE 754 128-bits floating-point - on powerpc64le, this patch splits the shared Implies file into three separate files (one for each of the powerpc architectures), without changing their contents. elf: Unify symbol address run-time calculation [BZ #19818]
Wrap symbol address run-time calculation into a macro and use it throughout, replacing inline calculations. There are a couple of variants, most of them different in a functionally insignificant way. Most calculations are right following RESOLVE_MAP, at which point either the map or the symbol returned can be checked for validity as the macro sets either both or neither. In some places both the symbol and the map has to be checked however. My initial implementation therefore always checked both, however that resulted in code larger by as much as 0.3%, as many places know from elsewhere that no check is needed. I have decided the size growth was unacceptable. Having looked closer I realized that it's the map that is the culprit. Therefore I have modified LOOKUP_VALUE_ADDRESS to accept an additional boolean argument telling it to access the map without checking it for validity. This in turn has brought quite nice results, with new code actually being smaller for i686, and MIPS o32, n32 and little-endian n64 targets, unchanged in size for x86-64 and, unusually, marginally larger for big-endian MIPS n64, as follows: i686: text data bss dec hex filename 152255 4052 192 156499 26353 ld-2.27.9000-base.so 152159 4052 192 156403 262f3 ld-2.27.9000-elf-symbol-value.so MIPS/o32/el: text data bss dec hex filename 142906 4396 260 147562 2406a ld-2.27.9000-base.so 142890 4396 260 147546 2405a ld-2.27.9000-elf-symbol-value.so MIPS/n32/el: text data bss dec hex filename 142267 4404 260 146931 23df3 ld-2.27.9000-base.so 142171 4404 260 146835 23d93 ld-2.27.9000-elf-symbol-value.so MIPS/n64/el: text data bss dec hex filename 149835 7376 408 157619 267b3 ld-2.27.9000-base.so 149787 7376 408 157571 26783 ld-2.27.9000-elf-symbol-value.so MIPS/o32/eb: text data bss dec hex filename 142870 4396 260 147526 24046 ld-2.27.9000-base.so 142854 4396 260 147510 24036 ld-2.27.9000-elf-symbol-value.so MIPS/n32/eb: text data bss dec hex filename 142019 4404 260 146683 23cfb ld-2.27.9000-base.so 141923 4404 260 146587 23c9b ld-2.27.9000-elf-symbol-value.so MIPS/n64/eb: text data bss dec hex filename 149763 7376 408 157547 2676b ld-2.27.9000-base.so 149779 7376 408 157563 2677b ld-2.27.9000-elf-symbol-value.so x86-64: text data bss dec hex filename 148462 6452 400 155314 25eb2 ld-2.27.9000-base.so 148462 6452 400 155314 25eb2 ld-2.27.9000-elf-symbol-value.so [BZ #19818] * sysdeps/generic/ldsodefs.h (LOOKUP_VALUE_ADDRESS): Add `set' parameter. powerpc: Fix TLE build for SPE (BZ #22926)
Some SPE opcodes clashes with some recent PowerISA opcodes and until recently gas did not complain about it. However binutils recently changed it and now VLE configured gas does not support to assembler some instruction that might class with VLE (HTM for instance). It also does not help that glibc build hardware lock elision support as default (regardless of assembler support). Although runtime will not actually enables TLE on SPE hardware (since kernel will not advertise it), I see little advantage on adding HTM support on SPE built glibc. SPE uses an incompatible ABI which does not allow share the same build with default powerpc and HTM code slows down SPE without any benefict. This patch fixes it by only building HTM when SPE configuration is not used. Checked with a powerpc-linux-gnuspe build. I also did some sniff tests on a e500 hardware without any issue. This behavior conflicts with powerpc{|64|64le}'s lock elision code, that checks the TCB before trying to abort transactions immediately before executing a syscall. Add elision tunables
This patch adds several new tunables to control the behavior of elision on supported platforms[1]. Since elision now depends on tunables, we should always *compile* with elision enabled, and leave the code disabled, but available for runtime selection. Use libm_alias_double for remaining powerpc functions.
Continuing the preparation for additional _FloatN / _FloatNx function aliases, this patch makes the remaining double powerpc functions use libm_alias_double to define function aliases (with consequent removal of the need for local compat symbol handling). Previous cleanups avoid this patch changing installed stripped shared libraries for any build-many-glibcs.py configuration (there are still some functions in this patch for which the order of double and float aliases changes within an individual source file, but in this case this doesn't result in changes to the final library). Base powerpc logbl compat symbols on __logb not logb.
Some powerpc logb implementations define a compat symbol for logbl based on logb, whereas libm_alias_double defines such a compat symbol based on __logb instead. This difference (logb is weak, __logb isn't) is enough to result in different installed stripped shared libraries. The difference in the installed libraries isn't significant, but first changing the compat_symbol calls helps make it possible to validate a subsequent change to use libm_alias_double by comparison of libraries, so this patch does such a preliminary change. Tested with build-many-glibcs.py for all its hard-float powerpc configurations. * sysdeps/powerpc/power7/fpu/s_logb.c [LONG_DOUBLE_COMPAT (libm, GLIBC_2_0)] (logbl): Define as compat symbol based on __logb, not on logb. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/power4/fpu/multiarch/s_logb.c [LONG_DOUBLE_COMPAT (libm, GLIBC_2_0)] (logbl): Likewise. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc64/fpu/multiarch/s_logb.c [LONG_DOUBLE_COMPAT (libm, GLIBC_2_0)] (logbl): Likewise. |

Continuing the preparation for additional _FloatN / _FloatNx function aliases, this patch makes powerpc fabs and fma use libm_alias_double to define function aliases. This brings in automatic symbol versioning compat handling, so the powerpc32 and powerpc64 wrappers that added such handling to the generic sysdeps/powerpc/fpu versions are removed as no longer required (there are no sysdeps directory ordering issues that would necessitate keeping trivial wrappers there). Fix TLS relocations against local symbols on powerpc32, sparc32 and sparc64
Normally, TLS relocations against local symbols are optimised by the linker to be absolute. However, gold does not do this, and so it is possible to end up with, for example, R_SPARC_TLS_DTPMOD64 referring to a local symbol. Since sym_map is left as null in elf_machine_rela for the special local symbol case, the relocation handling thinks it has nothing to do, and so the module gets left as 0. Havoc then ensues when the variable in question is accessed. Before this fix, the main_local_gold program would receive a SIGBUS on sparc64, and SIGSEGV on powerpc32. With this fix applied, that test now passes like the rest of them. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/dl-machine.h (elf_machine_rela): Assign sym_map to be map for local symbols, as TLS relocations use sym_map to determine whether the symbol is defined and to extract the TLS information. * sysdeps/sparc/sparc32/dl-machine.h (elf_machine_rela): Likewise. * sysdeps/sparc/sparc64/dl-machine.h (elf_machine_rela): Likewise. |

Use libm_alias_double for dbl-64 modf.
This patch makes dbl-64 modf use libm_alias_double. Both the dbl-64 and dbl-64/wordsize-64 versions are changed, and the ldbl-opt version is changed to define the libc compat symbol only. Because of multiarch wrappers, the changed implementations are made not to define aliases at all if __modf is defined as a macro, as with other functions, so avoiding duplicate compat symbols while allowing those wrappers to be simplified. Tested for x86_64, and verified with build-many-glibcs.py that installed stripped shared libraries are unchanged by the patch. * sysdeps/ieee754/dbl-64/s_modf.c: Include <libm-alias-double.h>. Remove powerpc32 sqrt wrappers.
This patch removes the powerpc32-specific wrappers for sqrt and sqrtf. These wrappers, by adding architecture-specific uses of _LIB_VERSION and __kernel_standard, unnecessarily complicate cleanups of libm error handling. They also do not serve a useful optimization purpose. GCC knows about sqrt as a built-in function, and can generate direct calls to a hardware square root instruction, either on its own, in the -fno-math-errno case, or together with an inline check for the argument being negative and a call to the out-of-line sqrt function for error handling only in that case (and has been able to do so for a long time). Thus in practice the wrapper will only be called only in the case of negative arguments, which is not a case it is useful to optimize for. Tested with build-many-glibcs.py for powerpc-linux-gnu-power4. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/power4/fpu/multiarch/w_sqrt_compat-power5.S: Remove file. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/power4/fpu/multiarch/w_sqrt_compat-ppc32.S: Likewise. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/power4/fpu/multiarch/w_sqrt_compat.c: Likewise. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/power4/fpu/multiarch/w_sqrtf_compat-power5.S: Likewise. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/power4/fpu/multiarch/w_sqrtf_compat-ppc32.S: Likewise. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/power4/fpu/multiarch/w_sqrtf_compat.c: Likewise. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/power4/fpu/w_sqrt_compat.S: Likewise. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/power4/fpu/w_sqrtf_compat.S: Likewise. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/power5/fpu/w_sqrt_compat.S: Likewise. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/power5/fpu/w_sqrtf_compat.S: Likewise. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/power4/fpu/multiarch/Makefile (libm-sysdep-routines): Remove w_sqrt_compat-power5, w_sqrt_compat-ppc32, w_sqrtf_compat-power5 and w_sqrtf_compat-ppc32. |

Obsolete matherr, _LIB_VERSION, libieee.a.
This patch obsoletes support for SVID libm error handling (the system where a user-defined function matherr is called on a libm function error; only enabled if you also set _LIB_VERSION = _SVID_ or _LIB_VERSION = _XOPEN_) and the use of the _LIB_VERSION global variable to control libm error handling. matherr and _LIB_VERSION are made into compat symbols, not supported for new ports or for static linking. The libieee.a object file (which sets _LIB_VERSION = _IEEE_, so disabling errno setting for some functions) is also removed, and all the related definitions are removed from math.h. The manual already recommends against using matherr, and it's already not supported for _Float128 functions (those use new wrappers that don't support matherr, only errno) - this patch means that it becomes possible to e.g. add sinf32 as an alias to sinf without that resulting in undesired matherr support in sinf32 for existing glibc ports. matherr support is not part of any standard supported by glibc (it was removed in XPG4). Because matherr is a function to be defined by the user, of course user programs defining such a function will still continue to link; it just quietly won't be used. If they try to write to the library's copy of _LIB_VERSION to enable SVID error handling, however, they will get a link error (but if they define their own _LIB_VERSION variable, they won't). I expect the most likely case of build failures from this patch to be programs with unconditional cargo-culted uses of -lieee (based on a notion of "I want IEEE floating point", not any actual requirement for that library). Ideally, the new-port-or-static-linking case would use the new wrappers used for _Float128. This is not implemented in this patch, because of the complication of architecture-specific (powerpc32 and sparc) sqrt wrappers that use _LIB_VERSION and __kernel_standard directly. Thus, the old wrappers and __kernel_standard are still built unconditionally, and _LIB_VERSION still exists in static libm. But when the old wrappers and __kernel_standard are built in the non-compat case, _LIB_VERSION and matherr are defined as macros so code to support those features isn't actually built into static libm or new ports' shared libm after this patch. I intend to move to the new wrappers for static libm and new ports in followup patches. I believe the sqrt wrappers for powerpc32 and sparc can reasonably be removed. GCC already optimizes the normal case of sqrt by generating code that uses a hardware instruction and only calls the sqrt function if the argument was negative (if -fno-math-errno, of course, it just uses the hardware instruction without any check for negative argument being needed). Thus those wrappers will only actually get called in the case of negative arguments, which is not a case it makes sense to optimize for. But even without removing the powerpc32 and sparc wrappers it should still be possible to move to the new wrappers for static libm and new ports, just without having those dubious architecture-specific optimizations in static libm. Everything said about matherr equally applies to matherrf and matherrl (IA64-specific, undocumented), except that the structure of IA64 libm means it won't be converted to using the new wrappers (it doesn't use the old ones either, but its own error-handling code instead). As with other tests of compat symbols, I expect test-matherr and test-matherr-2 to need to become appropriately conditional once we have a system for disabling such tests for ports too new to have the relevant symbols. Do not use __ptr_t.
sys/cdefs.h has a macro __ptr_t, which a few places in glibc use instead of void *. void * is a well-understood standard type for that purpose and in a post-C89 context there is no need for a macro for it; this patch changes those places to use void * directly instead. Unlike __long_double_t, __ptr_t is widely used outside glibc (or at least has many hits on codesearch.debian.net). I don't know how many of those uses would break if sys/cdefs.h ceased to define the macro, but there's enough risk that this patch leaves the definition and just removes the uses within glibc; removal of the definition can be considered separately if desired. Rename struct ucontext tag (bug 21457).
The ucontext_t type has a tag struct ucontext. As with previous such issues for siginfo_t and stack_t, this tag is not permitted by POSIX (is not in a reserved namespace), and so namespace conformance means breaking C++ name mangling for this type. In this case, the type does need to have some tag rather than just a typedef name, because it includes a pointer to itself. This patch uses struct ucontext_t as the new tag, so the type is mangled as ucontext_t (the POSIX *_t reservation applies in all namespaces, not just the namespace of ordinary identifiers). Another reserved name such as struct __ucontext could of course be used. Because of other namespace issues, this patch does not by itself fix bug 21457 or allow any XFAILs to be removed. Tested for x86_64, and with build-many-glibcs.py. Use locale_t, not __locale_t, throughout glibc
<locale.h> is specified to define locale_t in POSIX.1-2008, and so are all of the headers that define functions that take locale_t arguments. Remove bits/string.h.
These machine-dependent inline string functions have never been on by default, and even if they were a good idea at the time they were introduced, they haven't really been touched in ten to fifteen years and probably aren't a good idea on current-gen processors. PowerPC64 ELFv2 PPC64_OPT_LOCALENTRY
ELFv2 functions with localentry:0 are those with a single entry point, ie. global entry == local entry, that have no requirement on r2 or r12 and guarantee r2 is unchanged on return. Such an external function can be called via the PLT without saving r2 or restoring it on return, avoiding a common load-hit-store for small functions. This patch implements the ld.so changes necessary for this optimization. ld.so needs to check that an optimized plt call sequence is in fact calling a function implemented with localentry:0, end emit a fatal error otherwise. Optimize generic spinlock code and use C11 like atomic macros.
This patch optimizes the generic spinlock code. The type pthread_spinlock_t is a typedef to volatile int on all archs. Passing a volatile pointer to the atomic macros which are not mapped to the C11 atomic builtins can lead to extra stores and loads to stack if such a macro creates a temporary variable by using "__typeof (*(mem)) tmp;". Thus, those macros which are used by spinlock code - atomic_exchange_acquire, atomic_load_relaxed, atomic_compare_exchange_weak - have to be adjusted. According to the comment from Szabolcs Nagy, the type of a cast expression is unqualified (see http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg14/www/docs/dr_423.htm): __typeof ((__typeof (*(mem)) *(mem)) tmp; Thus from spinlock perspective the variable tmp is of type int instead of type volatile int. This patch adjusts those macros in include/atomic.h. With this construct GCC >= 5 omits the extra stores and loads. The atomic macros are replaced by the C11 like atomic macros and thus the code is aligned to it. The pthread_spin_unlock implementation is now using release memory order instead of sequentially consistent memory order. The issue with passed volatile int pointers applies to the C11 like atomic macros as well as the ones used before. I've added a glibc_likely hint to the first atomic exchange in pthread_spin_lock in order to return immediately to the caller if the lock is free. Without the hint, there is an additional jump if the lock is free. I've added the atomic_spin_nop macro within the loop of plain reads. The plain reads are also realized by C11 like atomic_load_relaxed macro. The new define ATOMIC_EXCHANGE_USES_CAS determines if the first try to acquire the spinlock in pthread_spin_lock or pthread_spin_trylock is an exchange or a CAS. This is defined in atomic-machine.h for all architectures. The define SPIN_LOCK_READS_BETWEEN_CMPXCHG is now removed. There is no technical reason for throwing in a CAS every now and then, and so far we have no evidence that it can improve performance. If that would be the case, we have to adjust other spin-waiting loops elsewhere, too! Using a CAS loop without plain reads is not a good idea on many targets and wasn't used by one. Thus there is now no option to do so. Architectures are now using the generic spinlock automatically if they do not provide an own implementation. Thus the pthread_spin_lock.c files in sysdeps folder are deleted. powerpc: Fix signal handling in backtrace
Now with read consolidation which uses SYSCALL_CANCEL macro, a frame pointer is created in the syscall code and this makes the powerpc backtrace obtain a bogus entry for the signal handling patch. It is because it does not setup the correct frame pointer register (r1) based on the saved value from the kernel sigreturn. It was not failing because the syscall frame pointer register was the same one for the next frame (the function that actually called the syscall). This patch fixes it by setup the next stack frame using the saved one by the kernel sigreturn. It fixes tst-backtrace{5,6} from the read consolidation patch. Checked on powerpc-linux-gnu and powerpc64le-linux-gnu. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/backtrace.c (is_sigtramp_address): Use void* for argument type and use VDSO_SYMBOL macro. Build divdi3 only for architecture that required it
As noted in [1], divdi3 object is only exported in a handful ABIs
(i386, m68k, powerpc32, s390-32, and ia64), however it is built
for all current architectures regardless.
This patch refact the make rules for this object to so only the
aforementioned architectures that actually require it builds it.
Also, to avoid internal PLT calls to the exported symbol from the
module, glibc uses an internal header (symbol-hacks.h) which is
unrequired (and in fact breaks the build for architectures that
intend to get symbol definitions from libgcc.a). The patch also
changes it to create its own header (divdi3-symbol-hacks.h) and
adjust the architectures that require it accordingly.
I checked the build/check (with run-built-tests=no) on the
following architectures (which I think must cover all supported
ABI/builds) using GCC 6.3:

Move wrappers to libm-compat-calls-auto
This commit moves one step towards the deprecation of wrappers that use _LIB_VERSION / matherr / __kernel_standard functionality, by adding the suffix '_compat' to their filenames and adjusting Makefiles and #includes accordingly. New template wrappers that do not use such functionality will be added by future patches and will be first used by the float128 wrappers. |

Based on benchtests, the assembly ones shows: $ ./testrun.sh benchtests/bench-fmax "fmax": { "": { "duration": 5.07586e+09, "iterations": 2.01676e+09, "max": 1350.39, "min": 2.073, "mean": 2.51684 }, "qNaN": { "duration": 5.09315e+09, "iterations": 8.4568e+08, "max": 2788, "min": 5.806, "mean": 6.02255 }, "sNaN": { "duration": 5.09073e+09, "iterations": 8.42316e+08, "max": 4215.84, "min": 5.737, "mean": 6.04373 } And $ ./testrun.sh benchtests/bench-fmin "fmin": { "": { "duration": 5.07711e+09, "iterations": 2.02982e+09, "max": 497.094, "min": 2.073, "mean": 2.50126 }, "qNaN": { "duration": 5.09134e+09, "iterations": 8.46968e+08, "max": 2255.14, "min": 5.807, "mean": 6.01125 }, "sNaN": { "duration": 5.09122e+09, "iterations": 8.4746e+08, "max": 1969.38, "min": 5.729, "mean": 6.00763 } } The default implementation (math/s_f{max.min}_template.c) shows slight better latency for all cases: $ ./testrun.sh benchtests/bench-fmax "fmax": { "": { "duration": 5.07044e+09, "iterations": 2.38695e+09, "max": 2048.58, "min": 2.073, "mean": 2.12423 }, "qNaN": { "duration": 5.09004e+09, "iterations": 9.45428e+08, "max": 3306.93, "min": 5.138, "mean": 5.38385 }, "sNaN": { "duration": 5.08458e+09, "iterations": 1.15959e+09, "max": 972.008, "min": 3.321, "mean": 4.3848 } } And: $ ./testrun.sh benchtests/bench-fmin "fmin": { "": { "duration": 5.06817e+09, "iterations": 2.3913e+09, "max": 1177.9, "min": 2.073, "mean": 2.11942 }, "qNaN": { "duration": 5.08857e+09, "iterations": 9.45656e+08, "max": 2658.83, "min": 5.09, "mean": 5.38099 }, "sNaN": { "duration": 5.08093e+09, "iterations": 1.16725e+09, "max": 1030.74, "min": 3.323, "mean": 4.3529 } } Both were run with GCC 5.4 (ubuntu 16 default installation) using default compiler flags on POWER8E 3.4GHz (powerpc64le-linux-gnu). |

Fix cmpli usage in power6 memset.
Building glibc for powerpc64 with recent (2.27.51.20161012) binutils, with multi-arch enabled, I get the error: ../sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc64/power6/memset.S: Assembler messages: ../sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc64/power6/memset.S:254: Error: operand out of range (5 is not between 0 and 1) ../sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc64/power6/memset.S:254: Error: operand out of range (128 is not between 0 and 31) ../sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc64/power6/memset.S:254: Error: missing operand Indeed, cmpli is documented as a four-operand instruction, and looking at nearby code it seems likely cmpldi was intended. This patch fixes this powerpc64 code accordingly, and makes a corresponding change to the powerpc32 code. Tested for powerpc, powerpc64 and powerpc64le by Tulio Magno Quites Machado Filho * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/power6/memset.S (memset): Use cmplwi instead of cmpli. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc64/power6/memset.S (memset): Use cmpldi instead of cmpli. |

Stop powerpc copysignl raising "invalid" for sNaN argument (bug 20718).
The powerpc (hard-float) implementations of copysignl, both 32-bit and 64-bit, raise spurious "invalid" exceptions when the first argument is a signaling NaN. copysign functions should never raise exceptions even for signaling NaNs. The problem is the use of an fcmpu instruction to test the sign of the high part of the long double argument. This patch fixes the functions to use fsel instead (as used for fabsl following my fixes for a similar bug there), or to examine the integer representation for older 32-bit processors without fsel. Tested for powerpc64 and powerpc32 (configurations with and without fsel used). [BZ #20718] * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/fpu/s_copysignl.S (__copysignl): Do not use floating-point comparisons to test sign. * sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc64/fpu/s_copysignl.S (__copysignl): Likewise. |

Use gcc attribute ifunc in libc_ifunc macro instead of inline assembly due to false debuginfo.
The current s390 ifunc resolver for vector optimized functions and the common libc_ifunc macro in include/libc-symbols.h uses something like that to generate ifunc'ed functions: extern void *__resolve___strlen(unsigned long int dl_hwcap) asm (strlen); asm (".type strlen, %gnu_indirect_function"); This leads to false debug information: objdump --dwarf=info libc.so: ... <1><1e6424>: Abbrev Number: 43 (DW_TAG_subprogram) <1e6425> DW_AT_external : 1 <1e6425> DW_AT_name : (indirect string, offset: 0x1146e): __resolve___strlen <1e6429> DW_AT_decl_file : 1 <1e642a> DW_AT_decl_line : 23 <1e642b> DW_AT_linkage_name: (indirect string, offset: 0x1147a): strlen <1e642f> DW_AT_prototyped : 1 <1e642f> DW_AT_type : <0x1e4ccd> <1e6433> DW_AT_low_pc : 0x998e0 <1e643b> DW_AT_high_pc : 0x16 <1e6443> DW_AT_frame_base : 1 byte block: 9c (DW_OP_call_frame_cfa) <1e6445> DW_AT_GNU_all_call_sites: 1 <1e6445> DW_AT_sibling : <0x1e6459> <2><1e6449>: Abbrev Number: 44 (DW_TAG_formal_parameter) <1e644a> DW_AT_name : (indirect string, offset: 0x1845): dl_hwcap <1e644e> DW_AT_decl_file : 1 <1e644f> DW_AT_decl_line : 23 <1e6450> DW_AT_type : <0x1e4c8d> <1e6454> DW_AT_location : 0x122115 (location list) ... The debuginfo for the ifunc-resolver function contains the DW_AT_linkage_name field, which names the real function name "strlen". If you perform an inferior function call to strlen in lldb, then it fails due to something like that: "error: no matching function for call to 'strlen' candidate function not viable: no known conversion from 'const char [6]' to 'unsigned long' for 1st argument" The unsigned long is the dl_hwcap argument of the resolver function. The strlen function itself has no debufinfo. The s390 ifunc resolver for memset & co uses something like that: asm (".globl FUNC" ".type FUNC, @gnu_indirect_function" ".set FUNC, __resolve_FUNC"); This way the debuginfo for the ifunc-resolver function does not conain the DW_AT_linkage_name field and the real function has no debuginfo, too. Using this strategy for the vector optimized functions leads to some troubles for functions like strnlen. Here we have __strnlen and a weak alias strnlen. The __strnlen function is the ifunc function, which is realized with the asm- statement above. The weak_alias-macro can't be used here due to undefined symbol: gcc ../sysdeps/s390/multiarch/strnlen.c -c ... In file included from <command-line>:0:0: ../sysdeps/s390/multiarch/strnlen.c:28:24: error: ‘strnlen’ aliased to undefined symbol ‘__strnlen’ weak_alias (__strnlen, strnlen) ^ ./../include/libc-symbols.h:111:26: note: in definition of macro ‘_weak_alias’ extern __typeof (name) aliasname __attribute__ ((weak, alias (#name))); ^ ../sysdeps/s390/multiarch/strnlen.c:28:1: note: in expansion of macro ‘weak_alias’ weak_alias (__strnlen, strnlen) ^ make[2]: *** [build/string/strnlen.o] Error 1 As the __strnlen function is defined with asm-statements the function name __strnlen isn't known by gcc. But the weak alias can also be done with an asm statement to resolve this issue: __asm__ (".weak strnlen\n\t" ".set strnlen,__strnlen\n"); In order to use the weak_alias macro, gcc needs to know the ifunc function. The minimum gcc to build glibc is currently 4.7, which supports attribute((ifunc)). See https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc-4.7.0/gcc/Function-Attributes.html. It is only supported if gcc is configured with --enable-gnu-indirect-function or gcc supports it by default for at least intel and s390x architecture. This patch uses the old behaviour if gcc support is not available. Usage of attribute ifunc is something like that: __typeof (FUNC) FUNC __attribute__ ((ifunc ("__resolve_FUNC"))); Then gcc produces the same .globl, .type, .set assembler instructions like above. And the debuginfo does not contain the DW_AT_linkage_name field and there is no debuginfo for the real function, too. But in order to get it work, there is also some extra work to do. Currently, the glibc internal symbol on s390x e.g. __GI___strnlen is not the ifunc symbol, but the fallback __strnlen_c symbol. Thus I have to omit the libc_hidden_def macro in strnlen.c (here is the ifunc function __strnlen) because it is already handled in strnlen-c.c (here is __strnlen_c). Due to libc_hidden_proto (__strnlen) in string.h, compiling fails: gcc ../sysdeps/s390/multiarch/strnlen.c -c ... In file included from <command-line>:0:0: ../sysdeps/s390/multiarch/strnlen.c:53:24: error: ‘strnlen’ aliased to undefined symbol ‘__strnlen’ weak_alias (__strnlen, strnlen) ^ ./../include/libc-symbols.h:111:26: note: in definition of macro ‘_weak_alias’ extern __typeof (name) aliasname __attribute__ ((weak, alias (#name))); ^ ../sysdeps/s390/multiarch/strnlen.c:53:1: note: in expansion of macro ‘weak_alias’ weak_alias (__strnlen, strnlen) ^ make[2]: *** [build/string/strnlen.os] Error 1 I have to redirect the prototypes for __strnlen in string.h and create a copy of the prototype for using as ifunc function: __typeof (__redirect___strnlen) __strnlen __attribute__ ((ifunc ("__resolve_strnlen"))); weak_alias (__strnlen, strnlen) This way there is no trouble with the internal __GI_* symbols. Glibc builds fine with this construct and the debuginfo is "correct". For functions without a __GI_* symbol like memccpy this redirection is not needed. This patch adjusts the common libc_ifunc and libm_ifunc macro to use gcc attribute ifunc. Due to this change, the macro users where the __GI_* symbol does not target the ifunc symbol have to be prepared with the redirection construct. Furthermore a configure check to test gcc support is added. If it is not supported, the old behaviour is used. This patch also prepares the libc_ifunc macro to be useable in s390-ifunc-macro. The s390 ifunc-resolver-functions do have an hwcaps parameter and not all resolvers need the same initialization code. The next patch in this series changes the s390 ifunc macros to use this common one. ChangeLog: * include/libc-symbols.h (__ifunc_resolver): New macro is used by __ifunc* macros.
