18159ba610 [base] Abort on unexpected failures in OS::SetPermissions
It is expected that changing page permissions can fail due to the system
running out of memory. However, any other failure is unexpected and
likely indicates a bug in the caller, such as changing the permissions
of an invalid memory region. To allow distinguishing between these
unexpected failures and expected OOM failures, this CL adds CHECKs into
the low-level memory management routines to abort when an unexpected
failure occurs.

Similar logic could later be added to other low-level memory management
routines that can legitimately fail due to OOM as well.

f43f8a0bb5 [base] Don't return bool from VirtualAddressSpace::Free* routines
Instead of returning a boolean success/failure value, the Free* methods
of the VirtualAddressSpace API now terminate the process on failure, as
this implies a bug in the caller. This is simpler than CHECKing for
success in all callers and also provides more details about the possible
cause of the failure.

This CL also renames V8_TARGET_OS_MACOSX to V8_TARGET_OS_MACOS and

6e06d756b7 [sandbox] Disallow executable pages inside the sandbox
These should not be allowed inside the sandbox as they could be
corrupted by an attacker, thus posing a security risk. Furthermore,
executable pages require MAP_JIT on macOS, which causes fork() to become
excessively slow, in turn causing tests to time out.
Due to this, the sandbox now requires the external code space.

In addition, this CL adds a max_page_permissions member to the
VirtualAddressSpace API to make it possible to verify the maximum
permissions of a subspace.

406d65d3bc [base] Add VirtualAddressSpace::AllocateGuardRegion
Previously, guard regions were created by allocating pages with
PROT_NONE and relying on an allocation hint. This could fail however,
for example on Fuchsia (where it would allocate a VMO to back the guard
region) and possibly on Windows (where a placeholder mapping was
replaced by a "real" mapping).

Introducing an explicit VirtualAddressSpace::AllocateGuardRegion routine
now makes this operation more efficient and effectively guarantees that
it cannot fail if used correctly: in a regular subspace, there is no
need to allocate anything when creating guard regions since the address
space reservation backing the subspace is guaranteed to be inaccessible
when no pages are allocated in it.

a7cb30b0e9 Introduce VirtualAddressSpace interface
This interface is meant to eventually replace the existing
v8::PageAllocator interface. Beyond general refactoring of the
PageAllocator APIs, the new interface now supports the concept of
(contiguous) address space reservations, which previously had to be
implemented through page allocations. These reservations now make better
use of provided OS primitives on Fuchsia (VMARs) and Windows
(placeholder mappings) and can be used to back many of the cages and
virtual memory regions that V8 creates.

The new interface is not yet stable and may change at any time without
deprecating the old version first.

38f97cae6b platform: Provide hooks for disabling allocation quarantining
Some performance sensitive paths in V8 (compilation/json parsing) or
paths with high allocation/freeing throughput can suffer from not being
able to reuse recently freed allocations. These paths can also
significantly increase the working set and cause large number of page
faults. For such paths (at least as an initial measure) we are planning
to disable allocation quarantining.

The CL provides a way for the embedder to hook in *Scan functions that
disable/enable quarantining. It also disables *Scan for json parsing and
compilation jobs.

e262e1cb4a [zone] Provide a way to configure allocator for zone backings
The CL provides a way for the embedder to hook in a special malloc-like
allocator that will be used for zone allocations.

An alternative approach would be to use weak functions with branches,
checking whether the functions were available at link-time. Those
branches could be optimized away with LTOs, so they would essentially
be free. However, the weak function approach is not portable (e.g.
there is no easy way to emulate it with msvc). The approach can be
revisited if indirect call turns out to be expensive (e.g. on hardware
with weak branch target predictors).

The CL is a prerequisite for running PCScan in the renderer process.

8581adaee6 Introduce v8_enable_virtual_memory_cage
When this is enabled, v8 reserves a large region of virtual address
space during initialization, at the start of which it will place its 4GB

ArrayBuffer backing stores and WASM memory buffers. This will later
allow referencing these buffers from inside V8 through offsets from the
cage base rather than through raw pointers.

10b847c765 [Jobs API] Rename IsRunning -> IsValid
IsRunning is the v8 equivalent of operator bool, but is confusing
with IsCompleted. IsValid (to match base:: operator bool) should be more
clear.

4cb4a2293c cppgc, jobs: Update job priority
This CL aligns the library implementation with the blink implementation:
(*) Concurrent marking increases job priority if no concurrent progress
is made in the last 50% of the expected marking duration.
(*) Concurrent sweeping increases job priority when calling
FinishIfRunning (the library equivalent of blink's CompleteSweep).

c1c38e1973 [platform] Add SharedMemory allocation and mapping
This adds new methods AllocateSharedPages, ReserveForSharedMemoryMapping
and CanAllocateSharedPages to v8::PageAllocator, which if overridden
allows the platform to declare that it supports allocation and remapping
of shared memory.

This interface is currently a work in progress so the new methods are
marked "INTERNAL ONLY" and they may change without being first
deprecated.

An implementation of PageAllocator is provided that can allocate and map
shared memory on Linux and Android, but no other platforms are yet
supported. While Windows is not supported the interface has been
designed to make this possible as AllocateSharedPages returns a
SharedMemory object that wraps the shared memory and provides its own
remap function. This should allow the SharedMemory object on windows to
contain a mapping a to hFileMappingObject as required by
MapViewOfFileEx.

4aa185bcb1 [api] Don't provide a default PostJob implementation
The default implementation just returns {nullptr}, which is not a
correct implementation. Since we rely on the implementation of {PostJob}
since https://crrev.com/c/2301933, and embedders can just use
{NewDefaultJobHandle} since https://crrev.com/c/2304812 (backported to

9dbab9bbdb [tracing] Migrate tracing to Perfetto track events
This patch replaces V8's tracing implementation (i.e., the TRACE_EVENT
macros) with the track event base implementation from Perfetto. The
advantages of doing this are:

1) This allows us to remove most tracing-related backend code from V8.

2) V8 can start writing strongly typed trace event arguments, which
are more compact, easier to process and more extensible than legacy
   JSON-based trace arguments.

For the time being, we still support the old trace macros when V8 is
embedded into Chrome and other embedders.

The current integration of crash keys into v8 got the dependencies wrong: it introduced into v8 a dependency on components and base.
