So far this flag was process-global, so if one isolate used v8::Locker
all isolates were forced to use v8::Locker. With the shared isolate
now being a thing that routinely gets migrated between different
threads, all users of the shared isolate would be forced to use
v8::Locker. So we now store that flag on the isolate such that using
v8::Locker for the shared isolate does not affect other isolates.
Deprecate v8::Locker::WasEverUsed() at the same time.

The wpt test external/wpt/wasm/jsapi/functions/entry.html failed
because the current context was entered when executing the start
function instead of the native context. The test crashed because in
GetEnteredOrMicrotaskContext a NativeContext is expected.

This CL introduces a dedicated API to retrieve the current (w.r.t. the
JS stack) script name or sourceURL. Currently, API clients will
collect multiple stack traces in increasing sizes to accomplish the
same goal. The new method walks the JS stack in the same way as the
stack trace collection mechanic but doesn't create/allocate stack info
or callsite objects along the way.

This changes the StackFrameInfo to either hold on to a pair of
(Script,source position)
or a pair of
(SharedFunctioInfo,bytecode offset)
similar to what we do for MessageLocation. The idea here is to defer the
costly bytecode offset to source position lookup until really needed,
and in particular, avoid the costly lookup during stack trace capturing.
On the `standalone.js` benchmark in crbug.com/1283162#c1, this reduces
overall average execution time by roughly 25%, and the performance is
almost back to where it was before crrev.com/c/3302794 (being only 12%
slower than before on the `standalone.js` test case).
Note that due to unrelated limitations we cannot encode -1 as bytecode
offset in the flags field of the StackFrameInfo, and so we treat this
case specially (happens when stack trace capturing is triggered in the
function entry sequence) and just eagerly resolve it to the source
position.

This introduces a new `GetLocation()` method for `v8::StackFrame`s,
which returns both line and column number at the same time (using the
existing `v8::Location` class). Since `v8::StackFrame` instances store
only the source position (per https://bit.ly/v8-stack-frame), we
currently need to look up the source position in the Script's line table
twice, once when we request the line number, and another time when we
request the column number.
With `GetLocation()` we perform only a single lookup in the Script's
line table and return both line and column number at the same time. This
cuts roughly 8% of the average execution time from the `standalone.js`
benchmark mentioned in crbug.com/1280519.

This CL renames a number of things related to the V8 sandbox.
Mainly, what used to be under V8_HEAP_SANDBOX is now under
V8_SANDBOXED_EXTERNAL_POINTERS, while the previous V8 VirtualMemoryCage
is now simply the V8 Sandbox:
V8_VIRTUAL_MEMORY_CAGE => V8_SANDBOX
V8_HEAP_SANDBOX => V8_SANDBOXED_EXTERNAL_POINTERS
V8_CAGED_POINTERS => V8_SANDBOXED_POINTERS
V8VirtualMemoryCage => Sandbox
CagedPointer => SandboxedPointer
fake cage => partially reserved sandbox
src/security => src/sandbox
This naming scheme should simplify things: the sandbox is now the large
region of virtual address space inside which V8 mainly operates and
which should be considered untrusted. Mechanisms like sandboxed pointers
are then used to attempt to prevent escapes from the sandbox (i.e.
corruption of memory outside of it). Furthermore, the new naming scheme
avoids the confusion with the various other "cages" in V8, in
particular, the VirtualMemoryCage class, by dropping that name entirely.
Future sandbox features are developed under their own V8_SANDBOX_X flag,
and will, once final, be merged into V8_SANDBOX. Current future features
are sandboxed external pointers (using the external pointer table), and
sandboxed pointers (pointers guaranteed to point into the sandbox, e.g.
because they are encoded as offsets). This CL then also introduces a new
build flag, v8_enable_sandbox_future, which enables all future features.

This CL adds the v8::internal::StackFrameInfo class as new backing

to indicate that it's used for the debugger API only. This new class

async stack traces in a cheaper manner going forward.

This is a non-functional refactoring to make naming of stack traces more
consistent, and thus easier to reason about whether the "simple stack
trace" (stack trace API) or the "detailed stack trace" (inspector API)
is meant. Granted, these names aren't great by themselves, but at least
we should be consistent.
This also adds a new `Isolate::GetSimpleStackTrace()` and uses that
directly to implement the Wasm C-API, avoiding the roundtrip via the
`JSMessageObject`, which actually carries a detailed stack trace (which
by chance worked out so far).

more lightweight and usable for (long time storage) by the V8

The execute_us is now tied to the --slow-histograms flag.
This currently enabled on a small population as a persistent finch study
which should give us enough coverage for now.

On the way to a cheaper and more scalable stack frame representation
for the inspector (crbug/1258599), this removes the need to expose
both what was called "function name" and what was called "function
debug name" on a v8::StackFrame instance.
The reason to having a distinction between that the V8 API exposes
and what the inspector exposes as frame function name is that after
the initial refactoring around v8::internal::StackFrameInfo, some
wasm cctests would still dig into the implementation details and
insist on seeing the "function name" rather than the "function
debug name". This CL now addresses that detail in the wasm cctests
and going forward unifies the function names used by the inspector
and the V8 API (which is not only needed for internal consistency
and reduced storage requirements in the future, but also because
Blink for example uses v8 API and v8_inspector API interchangeably
and assumes that they agree, even though at this point Blink
luckily wasn't paying attention to the function name):
- The so-called "detailed stack trace", which is produced for the
inspector and exposed by the v8 API, always yields the "function
debug name" (which for example in case of wasm will be a WAT
compatible name),
- while the so-called "simple stack trace", which is what is used
to implement the CallSite API and underlies Error.stack continues
to stick to the "function name" which in case of wasm is not
WAT compatible).

If a sample is captured during a GC, no embedder context is obtained

This CL removes registration of CppHeap as a remote tracer, and
revises LocalEmbedderHeapTracer as a switching point between CppHeap
and a remote tracer. Currently it is assumed that CppHeap and a remote

The main changes of this CL are:
It should no longer be assumed that an empty ArrayBuffer has a nullptr
backing store. This is in preparation for the move to caged pointers,
which cannot represent nullptr, and will instead likely provide a
EmptyBackingStore constant pointing inside the virtual memory cage. For
that reason, a new JSArrayBuffer::IsEmpty() helper is introduced, which
should be used instead of checking against nullptr.
CodeStubAssembler::GetTypedArrayBuffer now checks for on-heap
TypedArrays instead of comparing the backing store pointer to nullptr.
This is consistent with the implementation in JSTypedArray::GetBuffer.
v8::ArrayBufferView::CopyContents now uses JSTypedArray::DataPtr instead
of relying on nullptr backing stores to handle on-heap TypedArrays.
The serializer and deserializer now check for IsEmpty() and use the
kEmptyBackingStoreRefSentinel value to serialize empty backing stores.
Empty ArrayBuffers allocated for on-heap TypedArrays now have a
byte_length of zero. This allows removing the allocation_length() (and
allocation_buffer()) methods, which were only (incorrectly, as they
don't account for GSABs) used for memory measurements.

Once CppHeap moves away from EmbedderHeapTracer, it can no longer be

A SafepointScope might need to block for a shared GC initiated from
another client isolate. This means that anytime we create a
SafepointScope a shared GC may run. This CL adds a DCHECK to ensure
AllowGarbageCollected::IsAllowed() holds for each SafepointScope.
So far this DCHECK was only run in the less likely event that a
SafepointScope actually runs a shared GC. Which is technically good
enough but it is easy to miss use cases of SafepointScope where this
does not hold.

This fast path works for ASCII-only strings and is similar to the
existing fast-path in C++. Important differences:
- The locale check is done at Turbofan optimization time instead of
at runtime
- Use tables of size 256 instead of 128 to save a bounds-check when
handling one-byte strings.
- It first performs an equality check that's optimized for detecting
inequality quickly by comparing the strings from both ends. If the
equality check succeeds, we are done. Otherwise chances are high
that the strings differ according to collation level L1 already.
Therefore, we first do an L1 check and perform the L3 check
only when L1 didn't find a difference. This is based on the assumption
that few strings are identical except for different capitalization.
- Use the Torque version of string flattening instead of the runtime
version.

In the future we will allow arbitrary objects as host-defined options.
To prepare the embedders for the upcoming changes we migrate the API
to use v8::Data where possible.
Internally we still use i::FixedArray with primitive values until the
migration to context-stored host-defined options is completed.
Note: This CL also introduces a temporary cast and inheritance
between Data and PrimitiveArray which will be removed again.

Internal fields are used for implementing edges to C++ objects in
Oilpan. When setting the fields on a JS API object, we should also
emit a write barrier for this edge.
This mechanism replaces the explicit write barrier in V8's API which
is provided through `JSHeapConsistency::*`.
The internal barrier should also be slightly faster as it doesn't
require any API calls.

The goal of the PR is to add to telemetry a metric estimating the space
occupied by the codemap retained by a CpuProfiler and its underlying
CodeObserver.
This change is motivated by the addition of kEagerLogger to CpuProfiler
which when enabled let a CpuProfiler build a CodeMap without an active
session. This metric will help us understand better the space consumed
by a profiler in that scenario and will also help detect memory leaks.

The ScriptOrModule out-parameter is only used by NodeJS since we don't

options are handled.

Attach to the shared isolate after the main thread was set up. Otherwise
it could happen that a shared GC initiated from another isolate might
see no threads are running and performs the safepoint operation in the
middle of isolate deserialization.
We use DisallowSafepoints to check that the isolate doesn't join a
global safepoint before deserialization is complete. DisallowSafepoints
used to prevent only invocations of Safepoint() but was updated to
also prevent Park() and Unpark() invocations. Each state change could
cause the thread to reach a safepoint, which would allow a shared GC
to run.
We now also DCHECK that every isolate has at least one local heap and
that shared collections aren't started before deserialization is
complete.

V8 can fall back to creating a virtual memory cage that does not have
the desired security properties but at least allows V8 to run when
caging is enabled. This API allows the embedder to determine which kind
of cage is being used, for example for metrics collection.

Due to caching issues we will not be able to store host-defined options
directly on the Script anymore. ScriptOrModule can thus no longer be
a i::Script.
NodeJS keeps weak references from ScriptOrModule to their import meta
data. This CL changes ScriptOrModule to be a temporary struct which has
a different lifetime. As a temporary fix until the API is fully updated
we introduce the v8_scriptormodule_legacy_lifetime compile-time flag.
It keeps references to ScriptOrModule alive on the Script to restore the
previous behavior (at an additional memory cost).

The current implementation of the default ArrayBufferAllocator for the
virtual memory cage is highly inefficient as it simply forwards all
requests to the cage's PageAllocator. With this CL, this allocator is
now only used when the heap sandbox is enabled, in which case
ArrayBuffer backing stores must be located inside the cage. In all other
cases, in particular when only the virtual memory cage is enabled, the
backing stores can be located outside the cage and so the malloc-based
ArrayBufferAllocator is used.
This change only affects configurations in which V8's default
ArrayBufferAllocator is used.

WebAssembly dynamic tiering should be tested with an origin trial. For
the origin trial the feature flag value has to be loaded from blink.
This CL stores the value of the --wasm-dynamic-tiering flag in the
compilation state, from where it gets passed forward to all uses of the
flag. The flag value gets loaded from blink when a new NativeModule is
created.

- Hide the generic DataAt/SetDataAt accessors and replace them by
dedicated accessors. Use the common lower_case naming scheme for
these.
- Shuffle around definitions in js-regexp.h s.t. they are in a
meaningful order.
- Dedupe the source/flags accessors - these fields are stored both
on the instance and on the data array. We keep only accessors for
the instance. Previously, these were disambiguated through naming
oddities (e.g. Pattern() returned data->source).

This CL exposes the size of the virtual memory cage to the embedder
through V8::GetVirtualMemoryCageSizeInBytes(). This will for example be
useful to collect metrics about the cage reservation, such as how
frequently it fails, in the future. While collecting these metrics
directly in V8 would also be possible, it would require access to an
Isolate, which is not yet available when the cage is initialized. As
such, it is easier to enable the embedder to collect these metrics.

now just create a single BoundedPageAllocator to manage the entire
address range of the cage, then allocate the first 4GB for the pointer
compression cage.

EphemeronHashTable does not trigger interrupts when accessed

CopyChars takes a count parameter, not an end parameter, so we can save
some subtractions by passing in the count to WriteToFlat. Most of the
time the start,end arguments into WriteToFlat are 0,length anyway, so
this doesn't change a lot of places.

an unordered_set to a plain array.

Make off-thread deserialization play well with the Isolate compilation
cache, by moving the Finish call into GetSharedFunctionInfoForScript.
This means that
a) The isolate cache is checked before the Finish, allowing it to be
hit, and

When this is enabled, v8 reserves a large region of virtual address
space during initialization, at the start of which it will place its 4GB
pointer compression cage. The remainder of the cage is used to store
ArrayBuffer backing stores and WASM memory buffers. This will later
allow referencing these buffers from inside V8 through offsets from the
cage base rather than through raw pointers.

Rather than depending on slow signature checks, receiver type checks are
performed using fast numeric instance type checks.

To consume a code cache off-thread
1. The embedder creates a CachedData object wrapping the data blob.
2. The embedder calls ScriptCompiler::StartConsumingCodeCache with the
CachedData, and receives a ScriptCompiler::CodeCacheConsumeTask
which takes ownership of the CachedData.
3. The embedder calls ScriptCompiler::CodeCacheConsumeTask::Run
on a different thread.
4. Once this completes, the embedded passes the completed task as an
optional argument into Source constructor, and calls Compile as
before.
This is roughly similar to how streaming compilation works, with the
QoL improvement that Source owns the CodeCacheConsumeTask and therefore
we can reuse the same Compile method and do the off-thread finalization
behind the scenes inside Compile.
On the v8::internal side, ScriptCompiler::CodeCacheConsumeTask wraps a
v8::internal::BackgroundDeserializeTask, which has a Run and a Finish
method. The Run creates a LocalIsolate (again, similar to
BackgroundCompileTask), calls some helpers on CodeSerializer, and stores
the pre-finalization result in a OffThreadDeserializeData structure.
This stores Persistent Handles to the off-thread initialized SFI and
a vector of Scripts needing fixing up, and it owns the PersistentHandles
object which owns those Handles. Finally, the Finish method consumes
this OffThreadDeserializeData structure, fixes up Scripts, moves the
SFI Handle into the caller HandleScope, and that's it.
Since we don't yet have the source at off-thread deserialization time,
the various code cache sanity checks are done without the source hash
when deserializing, and the Finish method re-does them now that the
source is available.

Windows.h causes massive namespace pollution with its defining of many
macros, it adds to build times, it disables warnings, and it makes it
easier to write non-portable code.
This change removes windows.h from V8's win32-headers.h. It does this
by replicating the small number of typedefs that are needed and by
defining three "proxy" types that are the same size and layout. The
V8ToWindowsType functions are used to reinterpret_cast between the
types.
Prior to this change there were over 760 v8-related source files that
include windows.h. After this change there are 16.

This is a follow-up to https://crrev.com/c/3015557. Even though we
enabled trap handling and use it in wasm code, the embedder callback
still refused to handle the signal.
This CL removed an obsolete comment and simplifies the preprocessor
condition to just check for the V8_TRAP_HANDLER_SUPPORTED variable
instead of repeating the supported platforms.

Code event handler relies on having WasmEngine having an isolate, which
happens during Snapshot::Initialize.
Note that this fixes a crash (that the WasmEngine doesn't have an
isolate), but does not get gdbjit integration with Wasm working yet (see

The addition of new JSReceiver::OrdinaryDefineOwnProperty() overload
with LookupIterator::Key caused circular dependency between lookup.h
and js-objects.h, so the LookupIterator::Key was moved out of the
LookupIterator class in order to make it forward-declarable.

The WasmEngine is shared across the whole process, so there is no need
to store it in every Isolate.
Instead, we can just get it from everywhere on any thread using
{wasm::GetWasmEngine()}, which is a simple read of a global.

This removes/replaces header includes with the aim of shrinking the
size of the inline header cycle. Specifically before this CL, there was
a single Strongly-Connected Component comprising 60 header files from
src/objects and src/heap.
Now there are two 2 SCCs. The src/heap SCC has 6 files and depends on
the src/objects SCC, which has 50 files. Additionally some previously
implicit dependencies have been added.
Dependencies calculated using:

excluded in no-wasm builds (v8_enable_webassembly = false).
This makes it easier to port WebAssembly to platforms that do not need

For Cobalt's purpose in the past, we introduced base::Memcpy to
intercept memcpy calls and replace it with SbMemoryCopy on
Starboard/Cobalt. Recently Cobalt removed SbMemoryCopy because we found
out that memcpy implementation is universal. To reduce the cost to
maintain base::Memcpy, let us remove it and revert back to raw memcpy.

This commit adds a TryGetCurrent() method to the v8::Isolate class.
The motivation for adding this method this is that in Node.js we've run
into situations where we need to check if there is a current
Isolate and we are using GetCurrent() for this. The issue is that for a
debug build of Node.js, the debug check in GetCurrent() will cause a
failure.
The suggestion in this changeset is to allow getting the current
Isolate, or null if one does not exist, without any checks.

Instead of compiling a function with baseline immediately when the
interrupt budget is hit, we compile functions in batches to save some
memory protection flips on code pages.
This CL introduces batch compilation behind --baseline-batch-compilation
(enabled on future) and adds a flag
--baseline-batch-compilation-threshold to control the size of batches.

The counter as size_t can legitimately overflow on 32-bit systems, since
decreasing the counters is performed after all backing stores were
freed on a background thread. Before sweeping is finished a new backing
store could already be allocated which then leads to the overflow.

This CL does 2 things:
1) Implements forwarding of histogram reporting from cppgc to v8 via
CppHeap.
2) Establishes the pipeline in GCTracer for sending the histograms to
the embedder.
Currently only cppgc histograms are populated.

of c-function addresses and a FixedArray of the corresponding
FunctionInfo*. For now keep using only the first function in the array.

The method changes a global flag, depending upon which v8 attaches or
not the SharedArrayBuffer constructor to global objects. Chrome ended
up calling it when some contexts had already been created, leading to
inconsistencies. (Also) because of that, we decided to change the
mechanism for enabling cross-origin isolation (cf.
https://crrev.com/c/2880215). I believe it is better not to expose
this method.

The problem was blink injecting interceptor into the window object. It
observes "observation" and "mutations" on this object. When it happens
to the initial empty document, the IPC DidAccessInitialDocument() is
sent and modify the state of the browser process. Causing two tests to
fail.
The diff (See patchset 1..2) includes:
1. Use JSObject::HasRealNamedProperty instead of JsObject::HasProperty.
This skips the interceptor and do not walk the prototype chain.
2. Invert JSObject::HasRealNamedProperty() with
IsSharedArrayBufferConstructorEnabled(), just in case. This avoid
observing the object when not needed.

previous implementation of the reverse origin trial for
SharedArrayBuffer was broken, since the feature could only be enabled
globally per process, and only if the feature flag is set early enough
in the v8 initialization. This does not play well with how origin
trials work.
The implementation is similar to the callbacks that already exist for
the origin trials for WebAssembly simd and exceptions.

1. The complex logic of dobule flag + callback. However, this seemed
the best way to me to not break embedders which rely on that flag
being enabled by default.
2. The fact that what actually matters is just whether the callback
returns `true` once. It would be good to check that the callback gives
a consistent return value, or to provide a better API that cannot be
missunderstood.

Both NewSpace and NewLargeObjectSpace aren't used with
FLAG_single_generation enabled. So far both spaces still existed but
weren't used in this mode. This CL makes both spaces optional, which
ensure that we do not inadvertently create objects in them or use them
in any other way.
