25981026dc [heap] Improve accounting of PagedSpace::CommittedPhysicalMemory()
Instead of using the high water mark for determining this metric, we use
a bitset for all active/used system pages on a V8 heap page. Each time
when allocating a LAB on a page, we add the pages of that memory range
to that bitset. During sweeping we rebuild that bitset from scratch and
replace it with the old one in case free pages are discarded by the GC.
We DCHECK here that the sweeper only ever removes pages. This has the
nice benefit of ensuring that we don't miss any allocations (like we
do now for concurrent allocations).

CommittedPhysicalMemory for a page is then calculated by counting the
set bits in the bitset and multiplying it with the system page size.
This should be simpler to verify and track the "real" effective size
more precisely.

One case where we are partially less precise than the current
implementation is for LABs. In order to reduce complexity we now treat
all pages of a LAB allocation as active immediately. In the current
implementation we tried to only account the actual used part of the LAB
when changing the LAB later. This is more complex to track correctly
but also doesn't account the currently used LAB in effective size.

c992a25635 [base] Add VirtualAddressSpace unittests
These tests cover the basic VirtualAddressSpace functionality for the
three different types of address spaces currently available: the root
space, subspaces, and emulated subspaces.

This CL also includes minor bugfixes in VirtualAddressSpace
implementations and removes RandomizedVirtualAlloc in platform-win32.cc
which doesn't seem to do anything useful anymore but prevents page
allocation hints from working correctly.

277fdd1de7 V8 Sandbox rebranding
This CL renames a number of things related to the V8 sandbox.
Mainly, what used to be under V8_HEAP_SANDBOX is now under
V8_SANDBOXED_EXTERNAL_POINTERS, while the previous V8 VirtualMemoryCage
is now simply the V8 Sandbox:

V8_VIRTUAL_MEMORY_CAGE => V8_SANDBOX
V8_HEAP_SANDBOX => V8_SANDBOXED_EXTERNAL_POINTERS
V8_CAGED_POINTERS => V8_SANDBOXED_POINTERS
V8VirtualMemoryCage => Sandbox
CagedPointer => SandboxedPointer
fake cage => partially reserved sandbox
src/security => src/sandbox

This naming scheme should simplify things: the sandbox is now the large
region of virtual address space inside which V8 mainly operates and
which should be considered untrusted. Mechanisms like sandboxed pointers
are then used to attempt to prevent escapes from the sandbox (i.e.
corruption of memory outside of it). Furthermore, the new naming scheme
avoids the confusion with the various other "cages" in V8, in
particular, the VirtualMemoryCage class, by dropping that name entirely.

Future sandbox features are developed under their own V8_SANDBOX_X flag,
and will, once final, be merged into V8_SANDBOX. Current future features
are sandboxed external pointers (using the external pointer table), and
sandboxed pointers (pointers guaranteed to point into the sandbox, e.g.
because they are encoded as offsets). This CL then also introduces a new
build flag, v8_enable_sandbox_future, which enables all future features.

1ea76c1397 Implement a fake virtual memory cage mechanism
On operating systems where reserving virtual address space is expensive,
notably Windows pre 8.1, it is not possible to create a proper virtual
memory cage. In order to still be able to reference caged objects
through offsets from the cage base on these systems, this CL introduces
a fake cage mechanism. When the fake cage is used, most of the virtual
memory for the cage is not actually reserved. Instead, the cage's page
allocator simply relies on hints to the OS to obtain pages inside the
cage. This does, however, not provide the same security benefits as a
real cage as unrelated allocations might end up inside the cage.

367f86de7e [traphandler] Add arm64 simulator support on Windows
This ports the trap handler implementation for the arm64 simulator
from POSIX to Windows. Apart from different registers being used
for passing parameters, and different access to these register
values in the signal handler, the implementation is exactly the same.

The new logic is being used for sanitizer builds which automatically
target arm64 via the simulator, or if manually compiling an arm64
simulator build on x64. I manually tested the latter.

Also, the existing unit test is enabled for Mac (which was missing)
and Windows now.

c9704cf792 [wasm] Add unit tests for code protection
This adds some basic tests for WebAssembly code protection, in four
different configurations:
- no protection
- mprotect-based protection
- PKU-based protection
- PKU with fallback to mprotect

If PKU is not supported by the OS or hardware, then PKU is identical to
no protection, and PKU with fallback is identical to mprotect. We always
execute all four configurations anyway.
If protection is effective, we expect code to be writable within a
{CodeSpaceWriteScope}, and not writable otherwise. When trying to write
to non-writable code, we expect a crash of the process (checked via
{ASSERT_DEATH_IF_SUPPORTED}).

5e8e2d04a3 [gdbjit] Fix overlapping AddressRegion check
Whenever we are adding a new AddressRegion to the CodeMap, we first
remove all overlapping regions. The logic to check for overlapping
region is incomplete. For example, if all existing regions are less than
the region to be added, we incorrectly remove all regions, effectively
deleting all JITCodeEntry we have constructed.

We extract this overlapping check into a helper function, so that we can
unittest this without worrying about JITCodeEvent functionality, and also
without dealing with V8 internals (like Isolate and SFI).

The overlapping logic is rather hard to understand, has many special
cases, it will probably be much easier to just loop through all the
entries, rather than using lower_bound. Ideally, we can refactor this to
use some sort of sweep-line algorithm. Hopefully the unittests catch the
most obvious cases.

f888f48e4c [api] Add API for off-thread code cache deserialization
To consume a code cache off-thread

  1. The embedder creates a CachedData object wrapping the data blob.
  2. The embedder calls ScriptCompiler::StartConsumingCodeCache with the
     CachedData, and receives a ScriptCompiler::CodeCacheConsumeTask
which takes ownership of the CachedData.
  3. The embedder calls ScriptCompiler::CodeCacheConsumeTask::Run
     on a different thread.
  4. Once this completes, the embedded passes the completed task as an
optional argument into Source constructor, and calls Compile as
     before.

This is roughly similar to how streaming compilation works, with the
QoL improvement that Source owns the CodeCacheConsumeTask and therefore
we can reuse the same Compile method and do the off-thread finalization
behind the scenes inside Compile.

On the v8::internal side, ScriptCompiler::CodeCacheConsumeTask wraps a
v8::internal::BackgroundDeserializeTask, which has a Run and a Finish
method. The Run creates a LocalIsolate (again, similar to
BackgroundCompileTask), calls some helpers on CodeSerializer, and stores
the pre-finalization result in a OffThreadDeserializeData structure.
This stores Persistent Handles to the off-thread initialized SFI and
a vector of Scripts needing fixing up, and it owns the PersistentHandles
object which owns those Handles. Finally, the Finish method consumes
this OffThreadDeserializeData structure, fixes up Scripts, moves the
SFI Handle into the caller HandleScope, and that's it.

Since we don't yet have the source at off-thread deserialization time,
the various code cache sanity checks are done without the source hash
when deserializing, and the Finish method re-does them now that the
source is available.

This prepares the trap handler to support being used from simulators.
Modifications to the arm64 simulator will be done in a follow-up CL. For
now, the trap handler will be registered but not used in Wasm (we emit
explicit bounds checks instead, as before).

The implementation uses inline assembly, so it is only available on x64
POSIX systems for now. This is the main platform we use for testing and
for fuzzing, so it should give us the test coverage we need. If needed,
inline assembly for other platforms can be added later.
The new code will be executed by the existing arm64 simulator bots, e.g.

add69092c5 [web snapshot] Support RegExp
This CL adds support for regular expressions. To serialize a regular
expression, the pattern and flags are extracted and serialized as
strings.

Also, JSRegExp::StringFromFlags() is introduced to allow for
transforming back from JSRegExp::Flags to the corresponding flag string.
To verify that this implementation is on par with
RegExp.prototype.flags, unittests are introduced under
regexp/regexp-unittest.cc and RegExpBuiltinsAssembler::FlagsGetter()
is updated to include a slow path that calls JSRegExp::StringFromFlags()
through a runtime function.

8d0f5a0418 [wasm][liftoff][arm64] Avoid x28 even without pointer compression
Due to a recent change Liftoff used different register configurations
in the pointer-compression and no-pointer-compression setups. This
caused a mismatch between the registers used by Liftoff and the
registers spilled by the WasmDebugBreak builtin.

With this CL the same register configuration is used both with and
without pointer compression. Even without x28 there are 24 registers
that can be used. Moreover, 24 registers can be spilled without
padding, which would be needed with 25 registers to preserve stack
alignment.

Drive-by change: Use Reglist in frame-constants on all platforms.

80f5dfda01 [no-wasm] Exclude src/wasm from compilation
This is the biggest chunk, including
- all of src/wasm,
- torque file for wasm objects,
- torque file for wasm builtins,
- wasm builtins,
- wasm runtime functions,
- int64 lowering,
- simd scala lowering,
- WasmGraphBuilder (TF graph construction for wasm),
- wasm frame types,
- wasm interrupts,
- the JSWasmCall opcode,
- wasm backing store allocation.

Those components are all recursively entangled, so I found no way to
split this change up further.

Some includes that were recursively included by wasm headers needed to
be added explicitly now.

backing-store-unittest.cc is renamed to wasm-backing-store-unittest.cc
because it only tests wasm backing stores. This file is excluded from
no-wasm builds then.

f7bb9267eb [turbofan] Fix CsaLoadElimination for small types
CsaLoadElimination failed to account for truncation when optimizing
loads. This CL extends the notion of compatible Loads and Stores to
include ({store}, {load}) pairs which both have integral representation
and {store}'s representation is no smaller than {load}'s. In case the
representations are not identical, it truncates and possibly
sign-extends {store} before forwarding it to {load}.

Additional change: Extend ObjectMayAlias with wasm allocating builtin
calls.

3a9975191a [build] Improve build dependencies for gn check
Currently if gn check is enabled (with v8/third_party ignored), there
are many errors due to headers being used without adding the proper
dependency in BUILD.gn (or because it's being used transitively without
a public_deps chain).

This makes the number of errors go from 2114 to 195.

Apart from adding dependencies, it also moves _v8_internal_Node_Print
from objects-printer.cc to node.cc so it can see the Node::Print method
which wouldn't otherwise be possible without a circular dependency. Also
removes the previously deleted compiler/graph-builder-tester.h file.

adda4c5f98 cppgc: Add UMA support
This CL introduces cppgc::HistogramRecorder api which is similar to the
v8::metrics::Recorder api and is used by cppgc to report histogram
samples to embedders. Embedders should implement the api if they want to
collect histograms and provide an instance of it on heap creation.

CppHeap uses an adaptor class that implements the HistogramRecorder api
and is used to forward the relevant info to the relevant
v8::metrics::Recorder.

The api used 3 data structures: 2 for incremental steps that need to be
reported as they come (marking and sweeping) and 1 for the end of a GC
cycle that aggregates statistics over the entire cycle.
The data structure only provide the "raw" samples (e.g. atomic mark
time, incremental mark time, etc...). The embedder is expected to
compute aggregate histogram on its own (e.g. overall marking time).

6a1a3a101e cppgc: Add tracing scopes
This CL adds tracing scopes for the various cppgc classes.
Scopes use TRACE_EVENT_BEGIN and TRACE_EVENT_END macros to report trace
events. To do so they need to include trace-event.h. For unified heap
builds, trace-event.h forwards to v8's src/tracing/trace-event.h. For
other builds, trace-event.h provides a subset of
src/tracing/trace-event.h that covers just the parts used by cppgc.

This CL covers what we need for traces and blink gc metrics (up to
renaming events from BlinkGC.* to CppGC.*). UMA and UKM are not yet
handled.

063d56e71f Reland "cppgc-js: Add snapshot for C++ objects"
This reverts commit fba14bde5f.

Reland fixes:
- const vector<const string> -> const vector<string>

Original message:
The following implements a snapshotting algorithm for C++ objects that
also filters strongly-connected components (SCCs) of only "hidden"
objects that are not (transitively) referencing any non-hidden
objects.

C++ objects come in two versions.
a. Named objects that have been assigned a name through NameProvider.
b. Unnamed objects, that are potentially hidden if the build
configuration requires Oilpan to hide such names. Hidden objects have
   their name set to NameProvider::kHiddenName.

The main challenge for the algorithm is to avoid blowing up the final
object graph with hidden nodes that do not carry information. For that
reason, the algorithm filters SCCs of only hidden objects, e.g.:
  ...  -> (object) -> (object) -> (hidden) -> (hidden)
In this case the (hidden) objects are filtered from the graph. The
trickiest part is maintaining visibility state for objects referencing
other objects that are currently being processed.

Main algorithm idea (two passes):
1. First pass marks all non-hidden objects and those that transitively
reach non-hidden objects as visible. Details:
   - Iterate over all objects.
   - If object is non-hidden mark it as visible and also mark parent
     as visible if needed.
   - If object is hidden, traverse children as DFS to find non-hidden
objects. Post-order process the objects and mark those objects as
visible that have child nodes that are visible themselves.
   - Maintain an epoch counter (StateStorage::state_count_) to allow
deferring the visibility decision to other objects in the same
SCC. This is similar to the "lowlink" value in Tarjan's algorithm
     for SCC.
   - After the first pass it is guaranteed that all deferred
     visibility decisions can be resolved.
2. Second pass adds nodes and edges for all visible objects.
   - Upon first checking the visibility state of an object, all deferred
     visibility states are resolved.

For practical reasons, the recursion is transformed into an iteration.
We do not use plain Tarjan's algorithm to avoid another pass over
all nodes to create SCCs.

Follow ups:
1. Adding wrapper nodes for cpp objects that are wrappables for V8
   wrappers.
2. Adding detachedness information.

The intended use of the reference is by setting it up on the

The reference has known caveats:
- It's unsafe to use when the heap may terminate;
- It's unsafe to transitively reach through the graph because of

18da08757f [wasm][memory64] Start implementing the memory64 proposal
This is a first small step for implementing the memory64 proposal:
1. Add a feature flag.
2. Add the 0x04 and 0x05 limits flag for memory64.
3. Read memory limits as LEB-encoded u64 (instead of u32) if a memory64
   limit flag was read.
4. Unify {MaximumFlag} and {MemoryFlag}, which was used inconsistently
   before.
5. Add test for memory limits encoded with >5 bytes.
6. Move some macros from module-decoder-unittest.cc to wasm-macro-gen.h.

Note that still the same limits for the maximum number of pages applies
as before, i.e. you cannot specify a memory >4GB yet. But you can encode
that small number in >5 bytes.

5b9889d921 Reland "Reland "cppgc, heap: Don't eagerly allocate worklist segments""
This is a reland of f25cb50a2f

Removed the problematic tests.
The problem with the test was that we try to pop from an empty segment.
GCC flags that as accessing beyond the array (i.e. index is uint16_t
equivalent of -1). Preceding the actual pop is a DCHECK that asserts
the segment isn't empty. In practice, since we have the DCHECK and
access to the segment is always via a Local, this shouldn't be a
problem.
Unfortunately, GCC flags the access regardless. The DCHECK goes through
a function pointer so GCC cannot determine that in our unittest the
DCHECK would crash if index is 0 and the access would not happen (The
indirection was added to allow for test DCHECK handlers that don't
crash, so we can't mark the function pointer as noreturn).

Drive-by: Segment::Pop and Segment::Push rely on the their Local
counterparts checking of emptiness/fullness, so we should always
access segments via Locals. Making the Segment ctor private.

5f6aa2e5bf [heap] Add object start bitmap for conservative stack scanning
With conservative stack scanning enabled, a snapshot of the call stack
upon entry to GC will be used to determine part of the root-set. When
the collector walks the stack, it looks at each value and determines
whether it could be a potential on-heap object pointer. However, unlike
with Handles, these on-stack pointers aren't guaranteed to point to the
start of the object: the compiler may decide hide these pointers, and
create interior pointers in C++ frames which the GC doesn't know about.

The solution to this is to include an object start bitmap in the header
of each page. Each bit in the bitmap represents a word in the page
payload which is set when an object is allocated. This means that when
the collector finds an arbitrary potential pointer into the page, it can
walk backwards through the bitmap until it finds the relevant object's
base pointer. To prevent the bitmap becoming stale after compaction, it
is rebuilt during object sweeping.

This is experimental, and currently only works with inline allocation
disabled, and single generational collection.

f13c55d7b2 cppgc: Port incremental marking schedule
Schedule is simpler compared to the schedule in blink since it now
returns deadlines based on marked bytes instead of time.

If marking is ahead of schedule, return the minimum step size.
Otherwise, set step size to catch up to schedule (ignoring the time
passed while performing the step).
No more default initial step size (needed in blink since marking speed
was unknown).
If estimated schedule is exceeded (marking takes longer than 500ms), the
steps will try to mark all remaining objects but would still be capped
by the maximum step duration of 2ms.

f1589bbe11 [offthread] Change OffThreadIsolate to LocalIsolate
This patch introduces a new LocalIsolate and LocalFactory, which use
LocalHeap and replace OffThreadIsolate and OffThreadFactory. This allows
us to remove those classes, as well as the related OffThreadSpace,
OffThreadLargeObjectSpace, OffThreadHeap, and OffThreadTransferHandle.
OffThreadLogger becomes LocalLogger.

LocalHeap behaves more like Heap than OffThreadHeap did, so this allows
us to additionally remove the concept of "Finish" and "Publish" that the
OffThreadIsolate had, and allows us to internalize strings directly with
the newly-concurrent string table (where the implementation can now move
to FactoryBase).

This patch also removes the off-thread support from the deserializer
entirely, as well as removing the LocalIsolateWrapper which allowed
run-time distinction between Isolate and OffThreadIsolate. LocalHeap
doesn't support the reservation model used by the deserializer, and we
will likely move the deserializer to use LocalIsolate unconditionally
once we figure out the details of how to do this.

AdvanceAllocationObservers() informs the AllocationCounter about

c9d7b23658 cppgc: Add basic heap growing strategy
Adds allocation-based heap growing strategy that triggers GC based on
some limit. The limit is computed based on previous live memory and a
constant growing factor.

For invoking GC, we support two modes: with and without conservative
stack scanning. Without conservative stack scanning, an invoker makes
sure that we schedule a GC without stack using the existing platform.

ab671ee816 cppgc: Add HeapStatsCollector
This ports HeapStatsCollector (former ThreadHeapStatsCollector) from
Blink. The CL only ports accounting of allocated object size which is
needed for a simple growing strategy in a follow up.

HeapStatsCollector is a global dependency for most sub components as
it provides infrastructure for measuring time (through trace scopes)
and space.

The general idea of HeapStatsCollector is to act as sink where all sub
components push time and space information. This information is then
gathered and made available via an event that is implemented as POD.
Time-dependent info is available through regular getters (pull) and
observers (push).

611d1bb9a8 cppgc: Implement allocation on custom spaces
This patch provides infrastructure to pin object types to specific
spaces. This allows embedders to create mutual exclusive arenas for
certain (base) types. In future, this will also be used to provide
sliding-window compaction on certain custom spaces.

We mainly preserve the existing infrastructure with the difference
that spaces are now slightly more dynamic than in Blink as they are
kept in a vector instead of a fixed-size array.

The mechanism differs from Blink in that it does not allow the user
object to call allocation methods directly but instead provides a
trait that can be overridden to specify a custom space.

The patch preserves templatization for objects that do not go into
custom spaces to safe a branch in the allocation hot path.

3eefe03c51 cppgc: Add simple check/dcheck facilities
A few notes:
1) Oilpan is a generic library, meaning that it can work with arbitrary
user types. The library is split in type-aware (include/) and
type-erased (src/) parts. The former comprises a lot of code that still
needs to be defended with dchecks;
2) Macros are prefixed with CPPGC_, so that they don't clash in the user
code with similar macros from other libraries;
3) The macros simply forward requests to V8 so that dcheck handlers can
be configured uniformly;
4) The CL doesn't contain CHECK_EQ and friends, but they can be added
later if needed.

67ea621133 Reland "cppgc: Add page memory allocation backend"
This is a port of src/components/gc that was added recently.

Differences:
- Added back bucketing to the page pool, as that guarantees that
arenas used for specific types do not have their pages used by other
  arenas.
- Replaced base::flat_map with std::map. This may cause performance
regressions when using PageMemoryRegionTree in hot paths. A
vector-like representation may be used to fix such a regression

This reverts commit a056cea51e.

66cfc31581 cppgc: Provide basic allocation to have access to Heap backref
This CL provides a basic allocator that allocates normal-sized objects
on pages without ever reusing them. This allows for already using the
backref from page to heap which is used in some critical places
(pre-finalizers, write barrier, Persistent).
