0c4e21da95 Streamline picture_record_recurring_ bench. 
Reduce benchmark runtime from ~17 ms to ~13.25ms by moving SkPaint
construction out of the inner loop and by using random colors in the
SkPaints instead of sequential integers, which were seeing bad hashing.

This doesn't actually improve our performance, but makes the benchmark
more focused on pure recording costs.

5396a048d2 Added a high-color (50 colors) gradient for each gradient type. 
To do so I added an enumerated type called ColorType that can toggle between kColors_2 and kColors_50 to swap between 2 and 50 color gradients.





Added hicolor bench for each gradient type.

bcb42aecf1 add charsToGlyphs to SkTypeface 
Will disable new unittest until all backends are implemented.

On Mac, new API is 4x faster than old paint one, so next CL I will reimplement the paint calls in terms of the new typeface call.

2bbc2c945b Add an option to create unpremultiplied bitmaps. 
Currently they cannot be used directly by Skia, but
the pixels can be used elsewhere.

SkImageDecoder:
Add functions to require unpremultiplied output
and query the presence of the requirement

SkImageDecoder_libpng:
SkImageDecoder_libwebp:
SkImageDecoder_WIC:
Respect the requirement for unpremultiplied output.
TODO: Fix SkImageDecoder_CG.

SkScaledBitmapSampler:
Add procs to skip premultiplication and a boolean
parameter to use those procs.

ImageDecodingTest:
Test unpremultiplied bitmap decoding.

SampleUnpremul:
Add a sample which allows visually comparing between the
unpremultiplied version (copied into a premultiplied bitmap,
since drawing unpremultiplied is not currently supported)
and a premultiplied version of image files.

gm.h:
Add a getter for the resource path, so Samples can use it.

ef77ec2104 extend SkBenchmark to allow a bench to return a durationScale, which allows it to perform fewer actual interations, but report a scale factor to account for that. Thus a very slow bench can be compared head-to-head with a faster one, w/o actually forcing the tool to run for the full duration of the slower test. 
Extend BitmapBench to time bicubic filtering, and use this durationScale for it.

Extend SkBenchmark to have setBitmapFlags(or, clear), allowing it to request a set of paint flags to be cleared, and set to be set.

66070a527c Changing SkDeferredCanvas to use factories for creation 
The objective of this change is to remove all calls to 
SkCanvas::setDevice. The factory API is hidden behind
a build flag in order to ease the roll into chromium.

A side-effect of the factory pattern is that it will
no longer be possible to allocate a SkDeferredCanvas on
the stack.  This changes nothing for chrome, but it
impacts skia test programs.

This adds the same set of options in unit tests, i.e:

--match [~][^]match[$] [~][^]match[$] ...
~ causes a matching test to always be skipped
^ requires the start of the test to match
$ requires the end of the test to match
^ and $ requires an exact match

If a test does not match any list entry,
it is skipped unless some list entry starts with ~

ae6f47e55d Switches to a Skia-specific appengine entry point that uses condensed data and taskqueue writes (SkipBuildbotRuns). 
The default entry /add_point does not handle large data efficiently, so we've seen >30min timeouts for some bots to upload data. We now switch to using /skia_add_points that I'm writing for Skia, so we can condense the data to send to minimum (since all points in each batch have the same revision, platform and config), and dedicate the actual data processing to /skia_write_datastore which is a taskqueue task that has longer timeout and can run at app backend instead of blocking the bots.
Initial testing from my MacBook on Mac 64 bench data via vpn gave only a little more than 1 second for uploading data for one config, about 15 seconds for all 12 configs. That's a big win against 20+ minutes.

604a56ad42 Run non-rendering benches in their own config. 
Currently benches that set fIsRendering = false are run as part of the first config run. This is problematic for several reasons.

1) Which config they are run as depends on the --config options passed to bench. If I run bench --config GPU --config 8888 then they will be run in the GPU config and not the 8888 config.

2) Their presence makes bench take longer to run when testing rendering changes or comparing one rendering config to another (e.g. GPU v 8888). This is especially true on Android.

3) When comparing runs of a single config across multiple bench runs (typically  with code changes) it isn't obvious from the output which benchs to ignore because they say are listed under as being part of the config.

This CL adds NONRENDERING as a config (open to name suggestions). Non-rendering tests are run in and only in the NONRENDERING config.

Will this screw up our bench bots/scripts/graphs? If so I think we should change them since running non-rendering tests separately makes a lot more sense than the current madness.

a9a1967bcb Cut data point upload batch size to 25. 
Some bots have lower speed sending http data out, and this will make it less likely to timeout.
Did not try 50 because once we switch to using Chrome dashboard app, extra work needs to be done for each data point which will take longer. Since appengine has the fixed 30s timeout policy, there's not too much we can do unless we convince Chrome to switch to other solutions.

161e1ba4c0 Created my own flag parser, based off of gflags. 
Share common code between bench_ and render_ to set up the PictureRenderer.
Fix an include error in SkPictureRenderer.h.
Simplified parameter passing in render_pictures_main.
Switch to using an SkAutoTUnref for the PictureRenderer.

Fixed a bug in PictureBenchmark where calling setTimeIndividualTiles(false) sets the member variable to true.
Removed setDeviceType from PictureBenchmark, since only the PictureRenderer needs to know which device type to use.

Some changes to the input format:
'--logPerIter' no longer takes a 1 or 0. Instead, '--logPerIter'
turns it on and '--nologPerIter' turns it off (with off as the
default). (Note that this is for bench_pictures; bench still uses the old format)

Change '--device' to '--config' and 'bitmap' to '8888' to be
the same as gm.

Requires '--r' before inputs (to match gm), though there can be multiple inputs following it.

Changed --enable-deferred-image-decoding (which no one uses but me yet anyway) to --deferImageDecoding, since the former is incompatible with the flag parser.

Changes to behavior:
Show a short error message on failure (rather than the explanation of all
flags).

Currently viewport bot data are only available for Android bots.
Please go to http://go/skia-buildbot to pick a green revision (-r) for an Android platform (-p). This can take a few minutes because Google Storage stores files in a flat structure instead of in directories.
Alternatively, download the bot data of interest into a local directory (or generate them from your machine) and set the script to read from there (-d).

a53dcce4b4 reduce array size in debug builds for sortbench. This avoids a stack-overflow 
due to (1) SkTQSort's bad behavior on repeated-keys, and (2) windows-debug doesn't
implement tail-recursion.

Not an issue, since we don't care about perf in our debug builds anyway.

e2bfd8b7b1 The oval path bench tests used to draw a circle, but I changed them to an oval 
so that we could track performance changes for ovals. However, rendering the
stroked oval cases are now ~5ms slower since they're larger. This restores them
to something close to their original performance by slightly shrinking the
bounds. This will help determine what effect r7304 may have had.

46d3d39e65 Add GPU support for axis-aligned ovals: 
- Add drawOval base function to SkDevice, and override in SkGpuDevice
- Move isSimilarityMatrix to SkMatrix (renamed to isSimilarity) and fixed up unit test
- Since both SkGpuDevice::drawOval() and GrContext::drawPath() can try to draw ovals, added GrContext::canDrawOval() and GrContext::internalDrawOval() to avoid duplicate code
- Hooked in axis-aligned oval fill shader
- Enabled GPU stroked circles
- Added stroked circle bench test

20bd04e365 Turn on the kUsePathBoundsForClip_RecordingFlag in bench, gm and tools that use class PictureRenderer 
Chrome uses this flag for recording to skpicture in order to improve performance.
Therefore, skai benchmarks should run with this flag enabled, and we need 
gm and render_pictures test coverage to validate it.  In gm, the vanilla 
SkPicture test step will still run without the flag to ensure that case still gets test
coverage, while the SkPicture test steps that use rtree and tileGrid will now run with
the flag enabled.

05af1afd42 eliminate all warnings in non-thirdparty code on mac 
Most of these issues were due to functions whose definitions appear in header files; I changed those functions to be 'static inline' instead of just 'static' or 'inline', which kills the warning for such functions.

Other functions that were static or anonymous-namespaced but were unused in cpp files were probably called at some point but are no longer; someone who knows more than I do should probably scrub all the functions I either deleted or #if 0'ed out and make sure that the right thing is happening here.

Lots of unused variables removed, and one nasty const issue handled.

There remains a single warning in thirdparty/externals/cityhash/src/city.cc on line 146 related to a signed/unsigned mismatch.  I don't know if we have control over this library so I didn't fix this one, but perhaps someone could do something about that one.

optimize operator== by performing 4 compares in a row before checking
optimize setconcat by noting when we can write the answer directly into this

At least on this macbook, I had to mark helpers like isIdentity() as inline to get them inlined.

91f489a65d Modify the blur bench to add tests for high-quality blurs, and large non-integer blurs. Change the Coarse flag (which just turns on separable blurs) to an #ifdef, since separable is no longer just Coarse. (This #ifdef will hopefully be shortlived, once Chrome has switched). 
The separable blur algorithm gives +45% on SampleBlur, +84% on SampleBigBlur, +31% on TheVerge, +35 to +85% on blurbench in HQ (depending on size), +8 to +35% in low quality.  (All of these on 32bit MacPro).

8640d5024d This patch adds support for optional processing of the alpha channel in 
the matrix convolution filter.  Test cases are added to the GM and the

5faa2dc266 Implements a matrix convolution filter (raster path only). The filtering loop 
is templated on the tiling mode for speed:  interior pixels are unconditionally
fetched; border pixels apply the appropriate tiling mode before fetching.  It
handles target, bias, divisor (as gain), and edge modes (named to be more
skia-like).  It does not handle the "preserveAlpha" semantics of
feConvolveMatrix, nor "kernelUnitLength".

9a4125283a Report data from bench_pictures in the same fashion as bench. 
Move SkBenchLogger into separate files and make bench_pictures use it.
Remove sk_tools::print_msg, since SkBenchLogger is now used instead.

Combine picture_benchmark with bench_pictures, since that is the
only project that uses it.

Refactor the aggregator for bench timer data into its own class and
make bench_pictures use it.

Consolidate the various virtual PictureBenchmark::run functions
into one for reuse.

Encountered compile errors passing 64-bit size_t to
SkIntToScalar and needed to make adjustments to
gm/gradients.cpp and bench/PicturePlaybackBench.cpp.

Verified on my local Linux, Mac, and Windows machines.

As of this change, the skia_arch_width gyp define
actually forces a 32/64-bit build on Linux, Mac, and
Windows.

dd39488997 Avoid a loop in writeString and writePad by zeroing padding first. 
Also add a benchmark to time the new improved writeString. Before
my change the bench took ~1.23ms and afterwards it takes ~.95ms.

Add some testing to ensure that writePad works properly.

6fc5699e77 Fixing type mask computation in SkMatrix to make it faster and make it so that matrices have the same type masks as their inverses. 
This patch also add bench tests that call invert() followed by mapRect() on various types of matrices.  Performance of these tests was greatly affected by typemask computation

3a67a668db Add an SK_PRINTF_LIKE macro, which declares a function to have printf-like 
semantics, allowing gcc and clang to check the format string against the
arguments.  Enable its use on SkString (printf, appendf, and prependf).  Also
define an SK_SIZE_T_SPECIFIER macro so there's a cross-platform way of
printing a size_t.

The checksum triggers an early exit in the mem compare use to search for duplicate flattened objects. Also, call to memcmp was replaced with 64-bit at a time comparison loop.

Fix these class of warnings:

- sign mismatch
- missing function prototypes
- missing newline at end of file
- 64 to 32 bit truncation

The changes prefer to link in dead code in the debug build
with 'if (false)' than to comment it out, but trivial cases
are commented out or sometimes deleted if it appears to be
a copy/paste error.

af2313e7e7 Disable overly heavy benchmark - 15x slower than any other benchmark 
and not giving us particularly important information. It may be useful
to occasionally reactivate it when trying to optimize rectangle blits,
but otherwise it was a waste to have clogging up the performance bots.

1771cbf43d posix: Avoid static initializers in static/global mutexes 
This patch removes static initializers related to static and
global mutexes from the final library's machine code when
building on a pthread-capable system.

We use PTHREAD_MUTEX_INITIALIZER to perform POD-style
initialization. You need a line like the following to declare
a global mutex with it:

    SkBaseMutex gMutex = { PTHREAD_MUTEX_INITIALIZER };

We introduce the SK_DECLARE_STATIC_MUTEX and SK_DECLARE_GLOBAL_MUTEX
macros to be able to declare static/global mutexes in the source tree
uniformly.

SkMutex is now defined as a sub-class of SkBaseMutex, with standard
construction/destruction semantics. This is useful if the mutex
object is a member of another C++ class, or allocated dynamically.

We also modify a few places to refer to SkBaseMutex instead of a
SkMutex, where it makes sense. Generally speaking, client code
should hold and use pointers to SkBaseMutex whenever they can
now.

We defined a new built-time macro named SK_USE_POSIX_THREADS
to indicate that we're using a pthread-based SkThread.h
interface. The macro will also be used in future patches
to implement other helper thread synchronization classes.

Finally, we inline the acquire() and release() functions in the
case of Posix to improve performance a bit.

Running: 'bench -repeat 10 -match mutex' on an Android device or
a 2.4GHz Xeon Linux desktop shows the following improvements:

                      Before     After

        Galaxy Nexus    1.64      1.45
        Nexus S         1.47      1.16
        Xoom            1.86      1.66
        Xeon            0.36      0.31

This removes 5 static mutex initializers from the library

8caac6447d Add fractional-radius blurs to blur benchmark.

410e9dc9aa New SkMutex benchmark - used when we suspected mutex performance issues; 
committed not because they're a bottleneck now but because we might do
something with them in the future & it's quite lightweight.
